Exactly, thats the reason, I had called Varadero, overpriced and underpowered :)

I havent seen a varadero priced lower than that.

anyone knows whats the rough price for transport from phuket airport to hotel near patong beach?

not sure want to take cab or what...

650B around there. Take a meter taxi, and buy your ticket in advance at the booths outside the airport (right of the exit, you can't miss them).

Oren - what do you do to secure your bike during your trip? I am planning a Malaysia/Thailand bike trip over the Xmas/New Year time and the biggest concern for me is the safety of my bike. When I went to KL/Penang in the past, that was my biggest problem. Any suggestions?

Also, is there a way for me to take my bike from Mersing to Tioman? Or is there a place in Mersing where I can leave my bike and be sure that I will find it after I return?

Hi Manik,

This was a real concern for me before the trip. I can now say that except Malaysia, all other countries are very safe. So that gives you a bit of answer :p Here are some tips that I used and perfected with this trip:

- Always ask for your motorbike parking when booking a hotel: read reviews, or call the hotel is best. If you can;t get that info, look at customers photos: sometimes you can see a security guard, a parking in front of the hotel.

- If there is no parking, with security, then ask the hotel if you can put your bike inside the lobby for the night. Around 11pm you get it in, and wake up early at the time they want (usually 7am is ok) and take it out.

- Take a bike cover with you: not only will it protect your bike from rain and dust but also avoid to attract too much attention. Take something old, black or grey. Not a brand new cover super nice. Something cheapo but that covers the bike. I currently use a thick Pancho gotten in Vietnam.

- Put a disc lock : doesn't have to be an expensive lock. I am using a normal big ass lock that won't be easy to cut open or break with a hammer. I also use a wire I DIY that we use to lock our gear to the bike if we park it and have to go somewhere. For example, you eat across the street or stop to go to the toilet and you're alone etc.. The wire goes through the helmet, jacket and front wheel. I have never used it outside Malaysia for that purpose. I use it to lock the bike to a tree or pole in front of the hotel if there is no staff there at night.

[EDIT]: Just realized after reading that you're not riding a Pulsar anymore. I don;t know how popular your current bike is in MY. But the principles above still apply!

Now the good news:

- Pulsar is inexistent in Thailand. So people won't bother with the bike unless you have fancy rims and stuff on it.

- Pulsar is not a bike people dream of like Ducatis, or BMWs or even big Yamahas.

- Things are always far better than we imagine in our worse nightmares. Being Singaporean (or leaving here for a while !), we have kiasuness and fear of getting chopped in us. Which makes us think the world is out to rob us. The truth is, every country we went through, people were just happy to know about the bike, and very happy to help us with its security anyway they can. People understand it's your travel mode and you don;t want anything to happen to it, so just ask, and they will arrange a safe parking for it.

- Malaysia is not the land of robbers Singaporeans like to sometimes describe. Just common sense in handling your belongings and bike and you'll be fine. Don;t leave anything on the bike unlocked, and as much as possible stay close to it if parked in the street. That's it really, and you'll be fine.

We went to KL, Penang, and stopped many times on rest areas having to leave the bike to go at. We just make sure everything is locked + bike is in our sight, if not, we eat quickly or check on the bike from time to time. Very easy to ark the bike in your sight. And when at the hotel, just ask for help in parking it safely. If you don;t trust the security to look after it, ask to bring the bike inside. Or take time to find the right hotel. There is a thread on SBF with suggestions for hotels where bikes are safe.

Or you can let me know where you are going during your trip and if we hit the same spots, I'll share with you the accommodation we used.

Last advice: pack light. If you are riding alone, make sure you don't take more than a tank bag and 2 saddle bags or 1 back box. Ideally you want 2 bags in total. If with a pillion, careful not to pack too much. Riding light makes a HUGE difference in terms of fatigue, bike control and handling. Going for a longer trip will make you want to be ready for everything hence pack a lot. But less is more, always !

Hope this helps, ask more if something is unclear !

I always wanted to ride to mersing and leave the bike there to go diving in Tioman or other nearby islands. I have explored the possibility of leaving the bike with a local, paying something for them to guard it safely inside their home or something. But I never went with it, not convinced I trust a stranger enough.. If it's someone recommended to me, ok, but a stranger can do whatever with your bike while you're away for 2-3 days and then tell you it's not his ault someone broke into their house or parking. I read stories of riders who actually pin the bike down like a tent with pegs hammered in the ground and a chain running through them. Cant imagine myself doing that.. but I think if we go as a group, we can probably get a hotel or restaurant in Mersing to keep our bikes for a few days for a fee. I guess someone has to try it first..:)

What about the exhaust pipe getting flooded with water ?! And the electric stuff ??

I don't know if I would have the heart to basically drawn my bike

Can you ask them what tyres they use, looks like road tyres ?

And if there are any mods they do on the suspensions ? After all this off road stuff, if the bikes are loaded (which they are not n the pics), it must be a strain on the suspensions..

Question time again brothers. And of cos oren sister if u know the answer to it. ;)

My friend who has just gotten his student pass last week. Is now in indo getting his bike license. Is it possible for him to buy a bike and ride for a year if he fails to convert his license to a singapore one? Means hes still holding onto an indo license.

There's this rule that if u are a foreigner carrying foreign driving license. U can drive in singapore for up to a year without the need of converting ur license. Don't know whether this goes for bike not.

Help me if u know the answer please pros!
