Ok, guys, an update on my "road incident".

 

I'm at a red light, stationary in front of lanes, not in the middle, more the left part of the center lane.

This is a small junction. Behind me on my left, a bus. Behind me on my lane, a little black car. The car was stationary when I arrived at the red light, so I lane filtered, between the car and the bus, to position myself in the front.

 

The light turns green, I take off - I never take off too fast at junctions, want to always make sure some car/cab/motorbike is not trying to beat the red light from the other road. So I'm still on 2nd gear and all of sudden, the little black car (not so little anymore), is so close, I'm afraid he's going to knock me down. I'm aware of the bus on the left lane, but the car is so close to me, I keep going to get away and my bike grabs the car's front bumper with her !

 

Results: My bike is fine, zero scratches. I'm fine, managed not to loose my balance. Car driver is fine. Car's bumper is bent open. Not broken, just bent open about 15-20cm, like dislodged.

 

Who would you say is liable ?

 

I was going straight, the car was behind me, I think what happened is he took off too fast, not giving me clearance. He said it's my fault and supposedly I turned right after taking off (which doesn't make sense because I was going straight, and there's nothing right anyway).

 

I think what happened is he miscalculated his take off speed and got too close to me from the right, and I had to let him since I had a bus on my left.

 

I asked him on the spot if he wanted to file a report and/or call the police he declined (I didn't have anything so I didn't care). We exchanged HP number only, he forgot to take my plate number We were both on our way to work.

 

We called each other later today and I agreed to take on half the cost of the workshop bill to fix his bumper (up to $50). I didn't do anything wrong, but I can't prove anything, and I feel bad because it's my bike which caused the bumper bent. And the driver was very polite and calm, and willing to discuss and listen so I thought, let's avoid paperwork ...

 

What would you have done ? Do you think I should still file a report with my insurance ? Any advices on how to handle these situations ?

Anyway..thank god that u n shadow are okay..from what i read..i assumed by u filtering lane in between the bus n the black car..so tat means your in the middle in between both vehicles? and when u move off the car doesnt give way and take off just beside u and your right(the black car is on ur right..right?) crash bar/ side of your bike hit the bumper?

 

Anyway if youre in the middle of the lane..squeezin to the front is not advisable but its way too common and every biker does that to beat traffic jams or get to the front of the traffic light. Rules and what has been thought to us in driving schools is we must position ourself one bike away length behind a stationary vehicle when stopping regardless of situation..be it at the traffic light stopping or by the roadside..

 

I'm not saying youre to blame for this incident but IF it had cause a major RTA(road traffic accident) and TP & ambulance come down then your liable for it...your case is 50/50..nice to have a mature driver/road user who dont react harsly or over emotions..

TP rule is that also the behind vehicle fault as he/she did not keep a safe distance.

 

ur fault that u r the 1st vehicle and should be ready to move off and the light is green. [normally the vehicle behind more than ~3 sec, they will horn u already]

 

anyway half half also okie la...

but comfirm total cost will be more than $50. most likely will be abt $150-$200 as it invole knocking back

I am thinking of getting a hellahorn + an alarm from Motoworld, the same as MJ, and they will fix it for me.

 

 

 

Why not get it fixed where you buy it if possible, which alarm are you choosing ?

I agree that the rule is I have to stay in the middle of my lane, behind the car and not squeeze in to position myself to the front. 100% agree on that.

 

HVC, I wasn't right on the lane split, I was in the center lane, just not in the middle but a bit on the left side. But you are right, it's when taking off (all happened in a second!), the car got close to me, I couldn't change lane to the left so I stayed on the line. But why did he get so close to me ? There's more than enough space on his lane for me + his car.. Maybe there was another car/bike on the other side of him, I don't know.

 

Anyway my learning from this is, if I position myself to the front, I will take off quicker and really leave space between me and the cars behind. Usually I take off no problems, and I rarely ride in between lane, I only filter when vehicles are STATIONARY in case of traffic jam or light. Other than that, I always ride in the middle of the lane like I learned at school.

 

Total, the guy said the workshop quoted him $100 max, so my share will be $50 max.

 

I'm glad I chose to go 50-50 on this with him, and yes, it is good to deal with calm, polite road users in this situation. But I think both you and I were completely clueless as to how this happened. None of us tried to do something wrong, and both of us couldn't really explain what happened (I said he wasn't going straight, he said I wasn't going straight)...but it is nice to be able to talk as adults and solve things with discussion.

i think quite cheap below $10 or $10+ ba, last time i wanted to dup a special key, find until bukit timah, the uncle got super lots of key, just go there dup if u can't anywhere else. if he can't dup, i dont think any other place can, might need to go some specialized shop.

 

quite recently i talked to a friend, he said his s4 key cannot dup, cos got 1 chip inside. 1 key cost $100+

hi guys.. i've been reading the posts.. juz haven been posting much.. haha.. in any case.. o'ren.. for ur case.. no matter wad.. better report insurance and ask for a private settlement form.. or go to the insurance website and print out one.. when you pay the car owner.. ask him to give u a copy of receipt and if he refuses.. take photo of it den.. and his IC and driver license.. just to be kiasu abt it.. i've heard many cases where car drivers are nice at first but dun keep their words and claim against the other party even though its a private settlement.. so report to IDAC (WITHIN 24HRS!!).. report to insurance.. MUST GET PRIVATE SETTLEMENT FORM.. just to save yourself from any future trouble from anyone.. just my 2cts... hhehe..

for my judgement, it's 50/50, since u agreed to pay him 50%, just double check if ur bike got anything damaged, scratches, etc. then prob ask him for 50% also, but est ur's likely like $10-$20, so knock off like $5 off his bill lah.

 

anyway, i think it's a lesson learnt 4 u. just keep in the centre of a lane, it's not like what u learnt in school where u keep left. car usually mis-judge where bike wants to go if it's either to the left or right of lane.

 

i ever had an experience where i'm in center of a lane, but the lane so wide, left side 1 car sqeeze, right side 1 lorry sqeeze, what to do, all of sudden i got 2 bodyguards, sigh.

I guess you are right, we can never know.. I will definitely ask for the bill before I show the money. He can't claim against me, he doesn't have my plate number nor my IC or name. Just the HP. But we'll see how things are.

 

I triple checked my bike, no harm done. But I wonder now if the engine is not making a weird sound. Nothing to do with the incident, I think I'm just bounding too much with it, now I'm over protective and worry for nothing..
