Hi fellow pulsarians,

Been riding my pulsar 200 for 2 yrs plus now and it hasn't given me too much problems... am very happy with the bike..

Recently however, the speedometer box inside the head ferring seem to have collapsed! was wondering whether any pulsarians have encoutered this before? and how much would it cost to repair or replace it?

Having loaded myself with a little bit of vitamin M, i feel that i should do a full service of my bike. for the past 2 yrs, the only things that i have replaced is the regular engine oil change and the chain and sprocket. any idea what else i should be looking to replace? i know that my tyres badly need to be replaced, but what about the rear suspension, or the brake fluid, or even the spark plugs? plus, besides UM, is there any other shops which do servicing for bajaj bikes? any expert opinions here would be gladly appreciated...

Also, i read in the bajaj thread that there was a session where hazard lights were fixed for pulsar bikes? is it still available to be done? would be really interested to get some hazard lights for my pulsar bike, as it would add a brilliant safety feature...

Thanks again for any opinions and kudos to all for having such a wonderful thread!

wats vitamin M? im having a bad flu week. careful if u guys r wif me. u might get infected with gaban disease. muahahahha!!!

dear o'ren,

i believe what u're having is some sort of 'switching relay', which mean 87 is suppose to activate the current btw 30 & 87. the reason why i suggest 87 to + of battery is to check if the relay is spoilt, but the problem might not lie there.

another possible problem which is the ac/dc u mentioned. i suspected the lighting cable which u took from is ac but ur setup is dc, thus unable to 'switch' the relay on. what i would suggest is to test the volt btw the positive lic plate wire to neg of batt and/or to neg lic plate wire. this will enable u to determine the strength of the 'low power source' u're tapping.

the way i look at the relay diagram, it seems incomplete, cos if u're tapping a pos of lic plate, then where does the neg of the current goes? if the above is true, then it prob would be impossible to 'on' the relay, thus needing to find another source to tap from.

it's best if u can post a pic & possible a schematic of the relay u're using. that would be more accurate.

here's another website i found for wiring a relay:

http://www.r1200gs.info/howto/relay.html

note that 1 & 2 goes from ur pos to neg of ur 'power source' in which case ur lic plate lights.

The relay's diagram on the relay is as this one here :

http://www.breyn.com/vn750/bikepics/tech/airhorns/NEWHORN.GIF

Here's photos I took, the relay schematic actually is disappearing when you handle the relay because the ink is crap, so I taped it so it's not deleted. The top left pin on the schematic is 85, to top right one, completely on the right, is the 87A.

relay2.jpgrelay.jpgrelaypins.jpg

I tested the voltage between lic plate wire and NEG of the battery : I get 12 V exactly same reading as between the battery terminals.

I think I understand what bothers you: there is no wire going to ground, is that it ? On all the relay diagrams I looked at there is one, butnot this one. But I though going back to the battery negative was enough ?

The neg of the battery is grounded, so it acts like a ground. So basically the diagram you posted in the link is the same as mine above. Only difference is that I have a distribution block after 5 and after 2, but it still follows the same circuit logic:

http://www.r1200gs.info/howto/images/Schematic4.gif

1 is my 86 (lic plate wire)

2 is my 85 (ground)

3 is my 30 (battery +)

5 is my 87 (to accessory)

hi guys,

bought a second hand pulsar 180 cc (ug2 i think from details mentioned in this thread) from UM on 2nd Nov. i have done only 510Km and myfuel meter already is below empty but the reserve hasnt kicked in yet....i was wondering pulsar 180 has so low milage?? i got a full tank (20 liters) on 2 nov itself)

also gear shifting becomes hard many times and there is a knocking noise in the rear when i am driving at high speed or with a pilion behind me...

tyres are MRF custom ones and havent done any modifications yet.....please advice on what all should be changed or modified in this bike....

it was 18k++ when i bought it and its a 2005 july made bike with FZ plate.

please advice...

this ur 1st tank of fuel? i suggest u compare after a few more tanks for more accurate fc. do note that the guage is somewhat not very accurate. to get fc, i would use the km traveled div the fuel pumped. btw, no pulsar has ever clocked 20L of fuel.

since u're a new rider on 2nd hand pulsar, it could be wear n tear or (perhaps u tear it more) that the gear clutch got worn out. it also happens to me when i got my pulsar, less than 1mth chg cluth plate. :D

all in all, it's a good bike, and welcome to SBF. :)

edit: if u got pillion, perhaps would explain the low fc. weight does play a big part in fc.

5 is my 87 (to accessory)

since u got two 5, can u test out the other pin to accessory, i believe it's 87A?

1)what i can suggest, take out the whole thing, just connect 86 n 85 to the term of ur battery, i believe pos or neg not important, use ur multimeter test out 30 and 87/87A. this will confirm if the relay is spoilt if there's no connection.

2)if above succeed, take the 86 n 85 from lic plate to neg of battery, test out the same point again, if succed, all's well

from your diagram, i couldn't make out if there's any indication of which leg is what pin.

the concern why i think the lic plate might not work is because of the AC current.

The speedo is screwed to the top casing from below. The plastic bracket on the speedo may be broken, that's why it seems to sink in. On the bright side, it could only bw the screw loose or drop. If it is really broken, UM will put copper strip as a bracket to solve it.

hi arthur,

thanks for your comments..."no pulsar has ever clocked 20L of fuel"....honestly i paid S$26.80 after getting it filled at a fuel station near anchorage(opposite ikea).....

so your suggesting that i should get the gearbox and clutch plate etc checked??

Yah mine is UG2 also and the most I've ever pumped is 18L and that was really to the brim and also before the pump really reserve already. Well for 20L to get 510km is quite jialat because mine even though I whack sometimes I get around 550km for 15L.

Akshay,

If you were able to fill 20L that means prior to filling your bike probably had no petrol at all, almost dry!

So subtract 3L from that, 17L is what you should be calculating against, excluding reserve. Dont go by the fuel indicator, it isn't linear. Wait untill reserve actually kicks in and then calculate.

5 yr old bike with just 18k kms is hard to believe. Clutch and gear problems dont start so early, if your mileage is indeed that low. Change your engine oil to a good quality Fully synthetic and see if there is any difference.

Dont do any mods for now. Just change your tyres to Bridgestone, Dunlop or IIRC as the stock ones are prone to skidding and since you are a new rider it is very important to do this.

Cheers

yes, iirc mj had some trouble chg the sinob? spocket, like got 4 holes or 6 holes. the reason why they dont want to try is if they strip it out and they dont have the parts, then they have to put back 4 u. best if u have a spare and show them the parts else go back um or maybe find if mj can help.

Today I DIY openned the chain cover and found that my rear sprocket is 4 holes. That is good news as I believe I have more choice of sprockets.

1) I could get the P200 38 T sprocket from UM

2) Try in JB for Wave sprocket

3) I read in an Indian Bikes forum http://www.XBhp.com that P220 sprocket and chain which is 14T front and 37T rear and O-ring can directly fit the P180. Entire set costs $30. Maybe need to change the wheel hub as well. I can procure it from India from my Indian colleagues.

Not sure which option to choose

Dont trust the fuel indicator, it's not reliable, likes to play mind tricks :

0

use the trip meter to calculate your mileage : rest it to 0 after you fill the tank up and let your bike go until you run out of gaz. Don't worry, you'll still have about 2L of reserve to fall on.

Of course if you don;t want to experience the complete stop of the engine while riding, you can refill the tank before that but you'll never know exactly how much a full tank lasts.

Me I usually drag it beyond the red light when the tank is low on fuel, until I feel like I've been playing with fire too much and I go pump.

I'm sure in your case you did not pump 20L and you could've gone much further than 510km !
