8 Christians killed in riots in Pakistan

Banned Islamic extremist group accused of instigating violence against minorities

ISLAMABAD: Hundreds of rioting Muslims attacked Christians in the eastern Pakistan city of Gorja, burning and looting their homes in a rampage that killed eight Christians and wounded 10 others in the latest violence against minorities.

The riots were sparked by allegations that a Quran had been defaced.

Shooting broke out last Saturday, killing six people, among them a child and four women. Two men wounded by gunfire later died in hospital.

Officials said the riots, which initially began last Thursday and had abated before flaring again on Saturday, had been instigated by members of a banned extremist Muslim organisation.

Federal Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti said 40 Christian homes were torched in the riots led by the banned

Sipah-e-Sahaba group, which is accused of attacks against security forces and of carrying out bombings at public places in recent years.

He said there was no truth to allegations that a Quran had been defiled and accused the police of ignoring his appeal to provide protection to Christians under threat.

Aged — but still in the habit of caring

By JADE CHAN

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/7/29/starprobe/4407372&sec=starprobe

PETALING JAYA: Most of them are old themselves. But their vocation is to serve people and God as long as they are able to care for themselves and others.

So, even after retirement, the nuns of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM) care for those who are very sick and weak at the Assunta Convent in PJ Old Town which has been modified to serve as a retirement home for the sick and the FMM sisters in Malaysia.

The FMM sisters have the option of retiring in the place they are posted to or going back to their home country to spend their final days, said Datin Paduka Sister Enda Ryan, 81.

Sister Enda, the former headmistress of Assunta Secondary School, still helps out at the home apart from being actively involved in education and mission work.

She said that of the 14 sisters staying in the Assunta Convent, 12 were above 60.

“The FMM is an international order headquartered in Rome. The FMM missionary sisters are attached to the main order founded by St Francis, and we live by our patron saint’s values of joy, simplicity, hospitality and preference for the poor by reaching out to the marginalised.

“The FMM sisters in Malay-sia are attached to various schools and pre-schools, while others handle pastoral care at Assunta Hospital, manage the Assunta Chil-dren’s Society or help out with various church services,” said Sister Enda.

A family of sisters: Sister Enda (right) having a chat with Sister Lucia Tchou, 85, at the Assunta Convent, which serves as home to the retired and sick FMM sisters in Malaysia.

Sister Enda, who is also the school’s founder, is presently chairman of its Board of Governors.

She said the retired nuns who hail from South Korea, Vietnam, China and Malaysia kept busy by helping out with the day-to-day running of Assunta Convent or focus on their religious and spiritual work.

“We also get volunteers coming to the home to helps us,” said Sister Enda, who noted that the home is quite crowded and that they are short of beds, as there are more retired nuns, some of whom are afflicted with brain tumour, cancer and heart ailments, staying at the home.

Asked to comment on the Starprobe report on the growing number of old folk being dumped at hospitals and on the streets, Sister Enda said it was saddening to see such acts as Asian values place emphasis on caring for family.

“We must understand their circumstances before judging them as individuals. Surely they could have taken various initiatives before resorting to dumping the old folks,” she said.

Threatened to 'live with nuns'

NEW HAVEN (Connecticut) - A FORMER priest claims a bishop who played a leading national role in responding to the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal threatened to send him to live with nuns after he hired a private investigator to look into his pastor.

MADDEN HAD 'LITTLE CHOICE'

Mr Schwartz, the attorney for the church, said Mr Madden hired the investigator after he found out church officials were investigating Fay.

He also said Mr Madden was 'less than truthful' with the bishop and other church officials when he initially was asked if he had hired the investigator.

... more

The pastor, the Reverend Michael Jude Fay, later pleaded guilty to a federal fraud charge and was sentenced to three years in prison for stealing more than US$1 million (S$1.43 million) from St John Roman Catholic Church in Darien to support a luxurious lifestyle.

The priest who hired the investigator the year before, the Reverend Michael Madden, made the claim about the threat of being sent to live with nuns in a deposition for a lawsuit by the church's bookkeeper, who says she was harassed and threatened for exposing Fay's embezzlement.

Mr Madden was asked in the deposition in June

She's asleep, says dad of dying daughter

August 05, 2009

As his daughter lay dying from a diabetes induced coma, this father in the US state of Wisconsin did nothing.

GUILTY: Dale Neumann along with his defence attorney Jay Kronenwetter are seen at Marathon Country Courthouse in Wisconsin. Neumann was found guilty of second-degree reckless homicide. He later told police that he believed God would heal her.

And that he thought she was simply sleeping when she became unconscious, reported AP.

Madeline Neumann died in March last year from undiagnosed diabetes on the floor of the family's rural Weston home as people surrounded the 11-year-old girl and prayed.

Someone only called the police when she stopped breathing.

Dale Neumann, 47, was found guilty of reckless homicide on Saturday and faces up to 25 years in jail. He is scheduled to be sentenced in October.

Prosecutors contend Neumann had a legal duty to take his weakened daughter to a doctor.

A videotape of his interview with police after her death was shown to jurors during his trial before prosecutors rested their case.

In the interview, Neumann described the weeks leading up to Madeline's death, when he said she was a 'little weak and a little slower,' something he attributed to puberty.

Her condition deteriorated, and by the day before her death, he said, Madeline could not walk or talk.

'We just trusted the Lord for complete healing,' he said.

'We didn't really sense it was like a life-and-death situation. We figured there was something really fighting in her body. We asked people to join with us in prayer.'

Neumann said it never crossed his mind that his daughter might have lost consciousness, reported AP.

'She was just sleeping,' Neumann said. 'I didn't believe at all that the Lord would even allow her to pass.'

Neumann also told the detective that 'sickness is a result of sin' and that his daughter's death had not shaken his faith.

Neumann, said: 'If I go to the doctor, I am putting the doctor before God. I am not believing what he (God) said he would do.'

About a half-hour before the girl stopped breathing, one of the friends who was praying with the family suggested he take the girl to a hospital, the father said.

'I wasn't taken aback by it, and I understood where he was coming from,' Neumann said.

The family does not belong to an organised religion, and Neumann's wife, Leilani Neumann, testified that she and her husband have nothing against doctors.

But, she said, she viewed Madeline's illness as 'something spiritual'.

Leilani Neumann was convicted of second-degree reckless homicide this spring. She, too, is to be sentenced in October.

Dr Joseph Monaco, who worked on Madeline when she was brought to the hospital after she had stopped breathing, said she was 'very, very emaciated and wasted'.

She looked fine

However, Ms Lou Ann Esko, the defence's first witness, said she saw Madeline working at the Neumanns' coffee shop days before she died and that the girl looked fine.

'She was perky. She was smiling and chipper like she always was,' Ms Esko said.

Assistant District Attorney LaMont Jacobson told jurors in closing arguments Friday that Neumann was 'overwhelmed by pride' and selfishly let Madeline die as a test of faith.

Neumann knew he should have taken his daughter to a doctor and minimised her illness when speaking with investigators, Mr Jacobson said, calling Neumann no different than a drunken driver who remarks he only had a couple of beers.

Sitting straight, Neumann stared at the jury as the verdict in a nearly empty courtroom was read Saturday. He declined comment as he left the courthouse.

Defence attorney Jay Kronenwetter said he would appeal. He declined further comment.

Prosecutors also declined comment, citing a gag order.

Last week, an Oregon jury convicted a man of misdemeanour criminal mistreatment for relying on prayer instead of seeking medical care for his 15-month-old daughter who died of pneumonia and a blood infection in March last year.
