The UK Government has finally revealed the results of its SHARP motorcycle helmet tests - a five-star rating system to reveal just how safe a helmet is.

Although the initial results are restricted to a limited number of full-face helmets, over the coming weeks and months the Department for Transport, which operates the scheme, plans to rate every helmet on sale in the UK.

As MCN revealed last month, the Arai RX7 Corsair - the most expensive helmet tested - gets only three stars out of five, while top-rated five star lids include the Lazer LZ76, which costs just £59.99!:cheer:

Check it out here:

hey , this is good ... They're coming up with tests like NCAP ratings for cars . I still believe that LTA should enforce or recommend "full-face helmet" usage for riders . I believe that if they can work out something with the insurance companies (like discounts or offsets for usage of full face helmets) or even better , full protection urban riding gear , many more riders especially the new ones will opt for more protection . Since their insurance policy costs a bomb , LTA can make use of this opportunity to ensure better safety for new riders . Just my 2 cents

but the insurance company wouldnt be able to keep an eyes on every biker to ensure they wear the full face or full suit everytime we ride.

we can turn up in full gear to pay the insurance fee, get the discount, but behind their back, some will opt back to slipper and singlet leh...

just my 2cents.

yup , that's one issue that may arise from this initiative . The insurance company can state in its clause that under this scheme , any riders found not to be in full protective gear may lose their insurance claim or whatever they can think of (in any event of an accident) . Enforcement may be necessary from the TP side but i think this would reap long term benefits to the p-plater . They might even continue wearing full protective gear even after they have gone beyond a year of riding cos some of them would have a few near misses or accidents and believe that gearing up for the fall is important . This is of couse the culture of most european riders , especially UK . But i think this is almost impossible as the LTA doesn't care about motorcyclists . Don't let me start with the slippery road markings and drain covers ....

PSB rating is insane...

It makes us riders losers.

Some DOT and Snell Foundation approved helmets cannot meet PSB ratings even though they are recognised worldwide and have been around longer.

Some DOT and Snell approved helmets valued at over $400 are not PSB approved. Some helmets valued at $40 from Lim Ah Boy are PSB approved.

Bottomline is... it is not how much the helmet cost but rather how much do you value your head.
