yes can be done...

lazy man method -> use newspaper cover the bike body, den spray it. but before that, sand the rusty part away first.

more hardworking guy method -> with the correct tools (usually a spanner or ratchet), the whole pipe can be remove. then same procedure. sand it then spray it.

if you just use normal spray, the paint will only last for a few days only. simply because it is not produce to withstand the high temperature produce from the exhaust, and the paint will crack. look for this spray call VHT spray. it can last up till 700degree of heat so would be better. price range around 20-30 per can. but 1 can is enough to spray 3 exhaust.

that part is known as the header.

surely you can, but you are only wasting your time. Spray is merely a top coat, and it doesn't treat the metal to arrest the rusting process.

yeah, to repeat what wjyx said, best to remove the whole exhaust header, sand it down till all rust gone, wash with water and quickly dry with a rag or newspapers. once it's very very dry, get any High Temp black color spray from car DIY or hardware shops and spray light even coats.

I think you'll need a metal rust remover cum prepaint conditioner in order to do a gd job...

Steps to do a proper KNNBCCB with middle finger.

1. Bow down slightly, looking intensely at objective

2. Like a raging bull, hop and jog slowly towards objective

3. Take your left palm and slap it hard on the right mid-arm with a SLAP!

4. With charisma, raise right arm, whilst showing middle finger (with left palm trapped in bend right arm)

5. Shout! KNNBCCB

woah haha. i see i see.. so for me as a lazy man, what i should do is to buy VHT spray or any high temp black color spray from diy shops. then sand away the rusty part away from the header and wash with water and quickly dry with a rag or newspapers. once it's very very dry, i'll cover up the bike body and spray it.

well, that should do the job.. right?

The only solution is to get the header fabricated in stainless steel.

Absolutely. But depending on your budget and how long you keeping the bike. If you going to stay for long. Then fabricate new header. STAINLESS STEEL. Anyway selling point if in future you are to sell it in the forum. HAHAHA

yeaps thats wad i did for my s4 previously. to maintain it, apply armour all spray the one for the plastic dashboard. sounds ridiculous but it kept my headers black and rust free durig my s4 days. remember to spray it when the header has cool down. the slim bottle made in japan frm LAB was very good product but they neveer bring in the stuff anymore.
