Hi guys, recently i juz got a RVF from shop X. After riding for some time, I notice that it is very very very hard for me to kick to neutral after some riding. The level is practically stuck and when i kick hard, it goes to 2nd gear. When i press down LIGHTLY, it goes to gear one.. maybe i can get to neutral once in every 5-6 tries.. even if i manage to engage neutral, the neutral light might flicker and maybe slowly dies off especially if i move or tilt my bike..

2nd problem: there is a obvious sudden power loss when i try to accelerate especially around 2-4k rpm. And my fuel consumption is 10km/l.

I brought my bike to bikeshop B and the mech rode my bike and told me something wrong with my carburettor and there's only 3 pistons running which is the cause of power loss and high FC.

The the clutch plates are wearing off thus making it hard to engage neutral.

I went back to Shop X and told them the problem. They say they will fix for me. They told me they change new clutch plates for me, and new funnel for my carb.

When i rode, the problem persist but i can feel some difference caused by the new clutch plate. Brought back to shop B and the mech told me problem still there. Still power loss and still cannot go neutral. He even let me try kicking to neutral on another RVF to feel the ease.

So any suggestions from the experts? Very lost now..

Obviously Shop X doesn't have a good mechanic. Or the mechanic might be a lazy ass. Stop wasting time going back to the shop and try to get the mechanic to learn on the job at your expense. Go to another shop with a mechanic who knows what he is doing.

You can try to throttle slightly then shift it to neutral while keeping the clutch in all the way.

It's your damn bike, wash it yourself! You rinse your own mouth after you eat, don't you?

I take it its your RVF thats giving trouble? if it was me, here is what i would do.

1. find out which piston is the culprit. can find out by squirting water on the header. if the piston isnt moving, then the header wont be as hot as it should be.

2. replace that one spark plug. repeat step 1 to see if the plug is alive again.

3. if it still doesnt run, then it might be that the wire is faulty. just unplug that wire and start off the bike, seeing if sparks form.

4. if plug and the connectors are not at fault, only then would i open up the carb. the injector might be choked. wont hurt to clean the carb.

5. if after all that the piston is still not moving... hong kan. time to open up the block.

step 5 onwards, i am not smart enough to advise. need to pass on to the mech since i cant poke him anymore.

i do believe that its possible for one piston to sieze while the others still move. hopefully the problem doesnt arise from a siezed piston, that could be rather costly.

so i take it the piston problem does not persist?

new clutchplates normally fix the neutral problem. i cant think of anything that will cause neutral to not engage smoothly, except perhaps the "shaft", but even then you would have problems with all the gears, not just neutral.

its always nice to have a second opinion.

i trust the mechanic who diagnosed my problem.. he's quite famous here in the forum.. and of course i will convince myself that there's no problem with the engine..

the new clutch plates made my pickup and engine brake more powerful but doesn't solve my neutral problem.. no problem changing gear while riding at all.. could it be the gear box? or EO?

i read somewhere that my power loss and high FC might be due to spark plug.. any comments about that?

There is no such thing as one piston seized with the rest of the other 3, which shares the same crankshaft still running. It is mechanically impossible unless the con rod of that piston is broken but the engine would be seized if that were to happen.

No ignition due to spark plug or carburation problem maybe. Its not even a coil problem coz if it was...you would lose 2 cylinders. Most older inline four engines have one coil for 2 cylinders, sparking when one cylinder is on compression stroke whilst the other is on exhaust stroke.

Send your bike for a carb balancing check first. If the cylinder is not firing.. it is easily detectable... you can never synchronise the 4 cylinders vacumn to read equally. The other thing to check for no spark is the integrity of the high tension leads that comes from the coils to the spark plug cap.

It could be as simple one shorted plug.

Your fuel consumption would be bad if your running on 3 cylinders... need to use more throttle to get the same speed.

As for the clutch thing... try reducing the play in the clutch lever or readjust the foot shift lever lower... to allow you more foot pivoting lift from 1st gear to neutral.
