Hi all

Is there any way to convert Dynamic Disk into Basic Disk without loss the data?

I am using Windows XP.

Please advise.

Thanks!

Good question! I even had to look this up myself because I wanted to know out of curiousity :)

Dynamic disks do away with the basic disk limitation of requiring contiguous file space. But before you make the switch, you should know about a few reasons that dynamic disks may not be the best route to take for your organization's hard drives.

With the caveats listed on that site, it isn't possible to take all (or even one) "Dynamic Disk" to another computer and to expect it to work.

Technically speaking, this is because this technology makes use of the originating Windows system where you made the disks "dynamic" from -- and the Windows Registry controls that. Pretty sucky indeed, even though it gives users the convenience of combining multiple hard drives into one drive letter.

As to what software that can recover files from orphaned dynamic disks? I found one that can do that (Easeus Data Recovery Wizard Professional), but there may be more online that you can try...

Well, I met him last night to pass him some articles, and while I was there, he showed me about his problem...his machine can't even boot up onto Windows XP. Worse still, disks converted into "Dynamic", which means only the originating computer can see it.

He may need an expert data recovery service, hopefully something that can pluck out his needed files. And I know that a familiar person (we all know who he is in this forum) has offered it to him :)
