Types of Fuel and Octane Ratings

Petrol's octane rating is a measurement of the fuel's ability to resist engine knocking. Knock occurs when the fuel-air mix in the cylinder explodes instead of burning in a controlled way. This shockwave moves within the combustion chamber, and creates a metallic 'pinging' sound.

An octane rating is often referred to as an 'anti-knock index'. If fuel has a high octane number, it will have a higher resistance to engine knocking.

Octane Numbers

Usually, there are three different octane numbers associated with all petrols. Petrol's Research Octane Number (RON) is measured under simple test conditions. Petrol's Motor Octane Number (MON) is measured under tougher test conditions and at higher engine speed and temperature.

The average of these two values is what becomes related closer to actual driving conditions. This value is known as the Road Octane Number, and is what should be used in filling stations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shell V-Power

What is the octane rating of Shell V-Power?

In Singapore, Shell V-Power has been designed to deliver maximum power and responsiveness with Research Octane Number (RON) of 98, so that all cars can benefit from it.

Is Shell V-Power an unleaded petrol?

Yes. Shell V-Power is a high quality premium unleaded petrol.

Is Shell V-Power superior to Formula Shell XO?

Yes. Shell V-Power is a superior formulation that gives more power, quicker response and cleaner engines.

How does Shell V-Power compare with other types of petrol in the market?

Shell V-Power is the best that's available in Singapore as it offers maximum power and quicker response as well as engine cleaning properties. It is the only fuel that is re-engineered for regular vehicles, using advanced Formula 1 technology developed with Ferrari.

How does fuel re-engineering make Shell V-Power superior and unique to Shell?

Shell V-Power was designed using technology that had previously ONLY been available to Formula One racing teams. In striving to exploit the fuel's full potential, Shell R&D chemists and engineers have sought to understand the significance of gasoline chemistry on fuel performance under racing conditions. Armed with this information they have then worked with their refining colleagues to identify components from within our various refineries that when blended together will enhance the race car performance for each track on race day. In formulating Shell V Power for Singapore, we have taken this detailed knowledge of the Pulau Bukom refinery to identify components from within the refinery that will match the high expectations of our customers as revealed to us in market research. We are also confident that the performance features of Shell V Power will remain unique to Shell.

Interesting, in a way that the Frequently Asked Questions are in fact begging the questions, concluding the question with another presumed conclusion.

I believe Haichi was arguing along the line whether higher octane, or the V Power in question, is necessary for our regular road bikes which have relatively low compression.

The FAQ (logical but fallacious IMHO), clearly states V Power was developed with F1 for F1. Are we driving race engines?

That's one thing I don't understand about ppl quoting "At least not in S4's engine...

titanium valves, forged pistons, shot-peened conrods (SCEM)-plated cylinders integrated into the crankcase, scalloped surfaced pistons and etc are need to raise compression in modern engine to produce wicked power output...

Latest R6 engine that produce 133bhp(13.1:1) which broke the 200bhp per liter barrier needed 95 only.."

This is all about using higher ron for a cleaner engine and that extra in responsd. Wheather it works for you is up to your "placebo". There are one too many cases I heard about lower ron giving less performance power and dried slugish fuel settling in carbs etc. and varies among many riders and car user...no doubt about this. Just as much in reading as much articles in such a subject..things are jsut as contactdicting. MY opinion is my own experience and real from others beside just "read up" and "papers". It up to you guys to choose..but of course higher ron like 95 is better than 92 anytime hands down and as with "necessary or not"..its up to individual.

Things works for one does not mean it works for others..he is using 95... and go back read my psot again..what I meant by ppl missing my point in the first place.

"The FAQ (logical but fallacious IMHO), clearly states V Power was developed with F1 for F1. Are we driving race engines"

You can write in an query them and also that its logical but fallacious ..I have the link here is for ppl to read and decide for themselves. At any rate..all product has a "test bed" and that's where V Power is created somewhat..so is any power production bike engines out on the street now..and neither did I say V power was develope for S4 or your S4 has a race engine. My XR200 also no race engine..but using V Power was freaking good than regular 92..and my S4 is very happy with 95 with that added Nitro for xtra oxygen for better combustion. again neccessary or not..its to each his own.

was arguing along

Arguing?..no..not me. I'm just sharing what I know and if its drags on, it's just a discussuion for me just that if its too lengthly and invovle too much of my time..I don't bother. Anwyay, thanks for the discussion.

That's a rather heated response. I don't mean to offend you. Apologies in advance.

Well I too have tried 95 and the "cheap" petrol for many runs on my car and bike. No diff in mileage or power. Add this to the fact that I used V power for more than a year before realizing that I have been literally taken for a ride, all because of hearsay.

Let's say i will be using V-power always... Then the engine will be clean not say totally... rite?

No..no..don't get me wrong. Sometime usage of words can be misled in meaning. Nothing offensive really..no apology needed my friend. This kind of discussion is not about having the last word or winning the 'debate'. There are still always things we yet to know. Everything has their pros and cons.

"No diff in mileage or power"...totally agreed.

" I used V power for more than a year before realizing that I have been literally taken for a ride, all because of hearsay"...not really..if you have chance to have your carbs dismantled for cleaning someday...take a look at it..its very clean. Happened to me and mech asked me I just did carbs servicing last year or what..I told him 6 years ago.

Thanks buddy..this is an eye opener for those interested :thumb:

Oh...As you mentioned tapping full potential.....I would just like to point out S4 engine doenst have high compression, very simple engine using conventional materials....And the above mentioned items may needed to beef up high compression engine...Even R6 needed only 95...

After which the debated suddenly become cleanness of engine..??At first debate was direct to power wise....Tapping full power, faster acceleration and etc...hmm...

Well....

And after which super fuel comes in.....Where special additive are used...

I can understand where some spend so much over the years and believe in something suddenly challenged by others....Will be become a bit defensive...

Carbs cleanness can due to dirty air filter not necessarily by fuel...If fuel can gumed up the carbs...I wonder how happened to injectors....If you keep your air filter very clean I am sure there will be no problem with carbs..

Petrol are formed using distillation and the process would produce very clean liquid...Distribution and storage do play a part as well....

MY petrol stations might be lacked of maintanance, that y many concluded MY petrol is dirtier....

Well like I say most bike engine doesnt really benefit from higher octane...Well car ECUs are much more advance...And even knock sensors...Only a handful of bike models have it....

The more advance 32bits ECU in superbikes are to included diff mappings and sensors....But I think none can do wonders like presisely ignite fuel to obtain full power...as shown in the videos...

Not bad, spend much more to have -2% power output and use of V power....Well cancel out each other at its best.....:giddy:

But at least the tests are carried out in controlled condition....Well like I said most foreign forums donest really have this kinda products floating inside their forum....Cos they are well informed...

Let's not touch on cleanness as the tests will need more resources than to just hook up engines and run them with diff fuels..

Well since one of the more important advantage had not been established...then I am sure the rest would resulted in the same fate..

Unlike SG....Maybe we have better vehicles than them that can make use of all this????

or we are just ill-informed and hope for cheap power....

and some facts on additives

There is a word call "hype" meaning : "Publicise in an exaggerated and often misleading manner"...works both ways. It used and applied in many ways and such as in advertising. Much like software as in "vaporware"..meaning, the software doesn't even exist yet but advertised to feel the respond of the potential market for it.

This is just a video..may be made in house or paid by competitor to wit out the others. One thing obvious is that there are more brands on the market that claim the same benefits was not seen in the video like one example fro X-1R company. Wheather this video speaks truth, I'm not in teh position to conclude however, its a more for all to see and choose to decide for themself. I only rely on basis reasoning as in..say, if those product does not proved to be of any benefits, those company would have been sued many times over by now. They are still on shelves everywhere and not cheap either. Another basis is..if one have not tryied the product or have it used right, one should know that he/she is not in the position to commend or for a start, having sceptical doubts or at all talk down a product.

Again...all this video to me is very subjective...I tried what works and stop at what don't..not that they work..but how good one compare to the others. A little research and/or read up on their "white paper" according to tehir manufacturer would be helpful..rather than just watch a video claiming theirbest test equipment use and running on a Honda Civic..giving me the impression that "clips" video footage are used and for alll I know..that Honada civic may have mechanical problems...>LOL!

Anyway..like I said..its an "American Idol vote in your choice " thingy, half the time the result is unpredictable and again, "seeing is believing"..never try..best to keep the comment to yourself.

Without prejudice.

The last thing I want is something very slippery coated my clutch friction plates. Clutch slipped at high rpms...It would bring up temp of oil inside...If they should works....Unless they have pico technology and coat depending on surfaces...

If they dont coat internals. They how they reduce frictions? Well for cars engines it might be better...I would stay away from it for bikes...

I well lived past the days whereby I pay money to prove somethings...Things needed to be proved to me before I purchase them....Not the other way around...No wonder these products have market in SG...

The product I was involved last year , the item was connected across the battery. Shown 5bhp improvement on a Super 4..

3 bike were put onto dyno...One of the bike tested on the dyno was my F4i..Well if you guys still remembered..I promised if they can increase 5 bhp on my F4i...I would buy on the spot...To increase 5 bhp, even you put full system on a 100bhp bike and custom map...Is still hard to achieve....

After which dyno graph showed online...The product dies down to a smaller scale...

Due to some of the comments one forumer made, cost him some lawsuit.

Now there is internet... Check online. If it make sense technologically then it should be ok..

Loved the placebo part so much...

can't tell you how true it can get... well.. a fool and his money are soon parted... good for the economy though...

please strive for your 98.. V-power... platinum techron.. what nots.. to allow low demand for 92.. i'll happily take that...

now seriously guys...

compare apple with apple will you??

fuel detergent and octane number are two different thing... get it?

however.. why ppl are actually saying that there's an increase power is actually due to the fact that the fuel they buy in v-power.. etc... has cleaning detergents.. your carbs.. injectors get cleaned (albeit a wee bit).. and voila.. air/fuel mixture revert back to original settings (again albeit a wee bit).. and your butt-no-meter tells you that there's an increase in power.. your butt is probably right since fuel delivery is better... :)

power increase purely based on octane rating despite same compression.. my toes are laughing... someone mentioned something about v-power meant for f1 or sth... yea you're right.. it's for f1 and f1 only.. so stay off that fuel.. buy other fuel... your bike/car is no f1.. don't disgrace yourself...

hahahaaa

I was wondering is the fuel price not high enough and there are people spending money putting all sorts of things into the fuel and hoped for cheap horse power????

Lucky the days of $2 petrol were over...It really hurts my pockets....

Healthy debate...When the debated on octane failed...Detergents that come with premium petrol comes in and masked the octane level debate....

Contradicting when the topic lies within using higher octane...

Well I can safety say there are no cheap horse power....If not Exhaust makers all closed shop lo...Good service history are key to maintain power.

Well placebo takes over logic....

Checked thought some of the thread...Well debater gave lots of sound advices to most S4 riders but doesnt means he is right all the time at least on the petrol issue part....Some treated him like some bike guru...hmmm...

i certainly agreed with what hachi said..

the only fuel addictives i used are injector cleaners.. and these injector cleaners decrease FC too.. at least just for that tank..

other than that.. just pure petrol from MY or SG petrol pumps..

fuel so expensive already still buying all these sorts of tonic..??

somemore adding not just more than 1..?

does the fuel savings justifies what you spend on them??

will you break even then??

just pump the correct octane that the manufacturer suggests.. lower octane will cause engine knocking.. normally only happens on high compression engines..
