today my bike ran out of fuel at about 12 midnite. I rode my bike to a gas station and when i tried to unlock my fuel cap, found that the fuel cap spoilt.....again....2nd time in the 4.5yrs that i own my bike.

now i am stuck with a bike which cannot be refuel. anyone with experience with harley's Self-Locking Fuel Cap?

frankly speaking, i have bought a couple of OEM parts from harley and have been disappointed with the quality of the parts on many occasions. nowaday i simply go online and buy those aftermarket parts if i need one. may be aftermarket but the quality beats harley's "original" parts

Try spraying some WD40 in the keyhole.. hopefully it helps.

It's your damn bike, wash it yourself! You rinse your own mouth after you eat, don't you?

yup.. lubing the hole will make it smoother to turn

Sorry to hear that. It is true. The Harley self locking fuel cap is of terrible quality. Especially the older ones. The new self locking ones are supposed to be better but i rather not take my chances.

See if you can bring it back to the showroom somehow and get them to take it out for you and hope they can give you a free replacement one. A normal non locking one.

good luck

Yes, i too feel abit short changed with the design of the fuel cap. I try not to twist the cap too much when i'm tightening the cap and one i hear the "click" sound twice at most, i will try not to twist anymore.

But what i feel is harley should have given to it's stock bikes the key locking one as with the current status, your fuel cap can be removed/stolen by anyone who walks pass your ride and fancies it. :(

Harley Davidson is not just a bike, it's a lifestyle......

I second that suggestion. Taking away the fuel cap is not that bad. What is bad is when some people intentionally want to destroy your bike by pouring other fluids or sand or sugar into the fuel tank.

1st thing i always do is change out the fuel cap and put on a Kurayakyn Flush mount fuel cap. It is not superb in theft or tamper prevention, but at least, still slightly better peace of mind. And it looks good too...

the day after my posting, i gave a call to Sunburst's Mr Yee who is kind enuff to give me some suggestion on removing the faulty fuel cap. What i did is i use a hammer and hit a flat head screw driver against the side of the fuel cap. This will cause the fuel cap head to break off from the fuel cap, leaving the threaded part still screw into my fuel tank. Next, i use 2 screw driver and unscrew the fuel cap by pushing the screw drivers against the inside of the expose fuel cap. Hope this will help anyone who suffer the same fate as me. As for now, i'll just have to use back my stock fuel cap. Anyway i'll check out the Kuryakyn Flush mount fuel cap which u suggest. Thanks all.

Fits most Harleys except for the v-rod. Will fit on your XL1200R no problem. Installation is at most 10 mins.

Cheers

Where can I get this gas cap and the cost?

You can get it at SUNHOG. I think approx S$110?
