Hey there S750WP, great job there restoring your Suzuki Impulse yourself. I'm also in the process of getting the appropriate tools and starting to DIY after seeing the exorbitant fees shops charge for the parts, not inclusive of labor. (e.g. A carburettor o-ring which costs $5 at Automachinery (Yamaha) was sold to me for $15 apiece by the shop!) And my bike has 4 cylinders.

Enough motivation for that.

Aside from the savings you got to know your bike more during DIY, also I am not very comfortable to leave my bike to inexperience mechanics, whom handle the bike roughly and using short cut. Most of the servicing I try to do myself if I have the tools else I will send to shops which is reliable.

Today I change the stock speedo and tacho bulbs to blue LEDs purchase from a fellow forumer. Its the normal LED and not the super bright one, the bulb cost $5 each and $10ea for the super bright one, I chose the normal one as I worried it may be too bright and distract my riding, end up after install they appear rather dim. Also I have replace the blown bulb for the turn signal indicator on the cluster meter, it cost only 0.50cts ea. Enjoy the pics.

Total spend:$39

T10 LED bulb 4pcs(speedo & Tacho) : $20

Turn signal Light bulb (instrument gauge) : $0.50

Halogen Headlight: $18

Rear signal indicator: $0.50

I went to KS and checked with the uncle about the spark plugs(Denso U27ETR twin probe) he sold me for Impulse. He reassured me its compatible with my bike although Denso website stated U24ESR-N (Single probe) standard plug for Impulse. I decided to give it a try, I checked and adjusted the spark plug gap to 0.6mm and installed into my bike. The bike eventually fire up after I pull the choke, probably the bike battery has gone weak as the bike has not started for almost 3 weeks. I let the bike idle for abt 5s then I shut it down, because I have totally drained the coolant as waiting for the coolant pipe from Japan.

Another 2 more weeks counting down for the parts to flown in from Japan. :cheeky: Meanwhile I have bought the parts and send to work shop to replace the leaking fork oil seal as I do not have the proper tools for the job.

Next week if have time willl strip the carb and do some cleaning. :thumb:

Total spend:$74

Carb cleaner: $10

Fork oil seal x 1: $15

Fork dust cover :$15

500ml 15w Fork oil: $14

Workmanship to replace fork seal and dust cover: $20

Hello Impulse-ians ;-)

I just bought a 98 Impulse. Am looking for the rear disk for the rear brake. Seemed to be worn. anyone still got spares or any suggestions if any scrap yard got the spare.

Also, I bought this bike, cause I think, it looks good and value for money. Any group meetings, please do let me know.

Suspect the old fuel filter clog up and restricting fuel to carbuertor, which resulted the bike not able to idle smoothly.

Took out the carburetor to clean, change new fuel filter and hose (the old one have harden)

I have installed the new brake pump and the braking feels more firm compare to the GN125 brake pump replace by the previous owner (not sure why he do that).

Total cost spend: $100

$70 for the brake pump

$20 for New brake lever

$7 for the Dot 3 brake fluid

$3 for a new syringe used to fill the empty brake hose.

Anyway here is the comparison of the new brake pump and the old one removed.

I went for a spin this morning and the bike no longer feels starve of fuel/choking when idling in the traffic, and it confirm my suspicion of the choke up fuel filter.

Total cost spend: $14.50

Fuel filter: $4.50

Fuel hose: $10

Change new float assembly today, inclusive of needle valve. Check and adjusted the float height to 14.5mm.

The old float are sagging down quite alot, approx 1mm, compare to the new one and does not spring up fast enough compare to the new ones, resulted being too rich in the low and mid range.

I have tried to bent the float tang to adjust to the correct height but it did not help. After changing new floats and needle valve the bike runs much better at the low to mid rpm.

Total cost $45 X 4 :$180

Finally I have purchase a GSX1400 chain guard from a forum member in GSX1400.org, I believe it should fit the GSX400. Currently I am using Phamtome chain guard, mod to fit, but looks quite ugly in my opinion.

Been searching high and low for months to complete the retro look of my Impulse, been to the scrap yard and Ebay with no luck, and KS is asking $70 for a brand new one.

All in all, I paid $45 for the chain guard, inclusive of shipping from UK ($25) to Singapore, and it should arrived by next week.
