Been away for 5 days on a touring trip with my wife on our stromie. Just like to share a little about our trip and some observations about the DL650.

We all know the thread is worthless without pics. So here goes.

Fully loaded stromie on Gunung Brinchang

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa141/bar8cuda/Motorbike%20Stuff%20for%20Sale/P1230962.jpg

Itinerary

Day 1 - Melaka via NS Highway

Day 2 - Cameron Highlands

Day 3 - Cameron Highlands

Day 4 - Cherating (Via Gua Musang - Kuala Berang)

Day 5 - Cherating back home via route 3

Total Distance Covered (Gelah Patah Petronas back to Gelah Patah Petronas)

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa141/bar8cuda/Motorbike%20Stuff%20for%20Sale/P1240041.jpg

The DL650 seems to be quite comfortable at about 6k RPM. Enough power for 2-up touring. Just need to drop 1 gear when overtaking. No complains. Suspension is a little weak with 2-up and full luggage (30L panniers and top box). I could flat foot with both feet. The rear really sinks down. Both my wife & I weigh 100kgs combined. With H&B mainstand installed, ground clearance is significantly reduced. I didn't realise it was so bad. Probably worse than my Ex TDM900. The design of the mainstand is the issue. I feel like installing harder/taller springs.

Another annoying thing was the chain rattle against the legs of the mainstand. I don't notice this in SGP but on rough potholed roads up north, I could hear annoying rattling sound over speed strips, rough terrain. It felt like something was loose and I could not find a loose part until I noticed how close the chain was to the mainstand leg. I wonder if any vstormer experienced this and has a solution (other than removing the mainstand).

Otherwise the bike held up and was fantastic. Stock windscreen had no buffeting issues with both our tourcross helmets. I'm 1.7m.

Little clearance between chain and mainstand leg

Feel free to discuss on the limitations of the DL650 :)

Congrats on ur recent adventure. Got to agree with the rear shock. It really sink esp with fully loaded two up. Don't dare take corner especially on the left side. Have u max out both the rebound and suspension height?? Improve a bit but still not enough for me.

I noticed that Wee's chain is louder than Vee's. Design wise should be the same rite??

PS: How's everybody?? Any meet ups or top ups??

A man only needs so much money, the rest is just showing off

Boss, you are definately right..... The wee stock suspension really sucks to the max. Considering both you and pillion's combine weight is 100 kg and 3 box about another 100kg if full load (it think 45+30+30 hepco junior version), your feet can touch the ground, mine is worse considering both pillion and me combined weight abt 180 without side pannier.

I got no issue with my main stand, except that it does reduce the clearance significantly.I still prefer to put my bike on the main stand. Either you take out your main stand or change suspension or spring. Same as TDM, got ohlins and wilbers and other aftermarket. I did ask Mtech on the Wilber suspension VStrom Singapore-Wilber Suspension.Alternatively like the seniors suggest, you can change the dogbone. I'm not sure if any Wee got change dogbone and have significant improvement. Probably Anodise might know this. However considering how weak the Wee suspension is compare to the Vee, if you have enough money to spare, I suggest you change your suspension since you can customize the length, spring load, and weight set up. Too bad my money have to go to some other priorities for now else I would have change it.

The big Vee have a better suspension than the Wee I agree. But that does not mean the Wee is not a fun bike to play with. To compare the Vee and Wee is a bit off set cos they are different league (DL 650,African Twin,Transalp, F650,Versys etc)(TDM,DL 1000,Varadero etc)

Hope this don't makes you regret swapping TDM for the Wee. Give her more chance and she prove her worth to you:angel:

I'm aware of e limitations of e stock rear shock. Anyone installed ohlins? Care to review? Was leaning towards wilburs but some overseas reports on failures steered me towards other brands.

No one seems to be commenting on e chain rattling against e mainstand leg. What mainstands are all of u using? Can take a pic to show e clearance between e chain & e left leg like in my pic? My chain tension is correct. Just thought e chain movement shouldn't touch e mainstand during some rough terrain.

When putting side stand my chain does touches the main stand. Rattling probably I didn't hear cos too busy enjoying my ride.

As far as I know, Cstay installed ohlins but had swap bike for FJR. Which product never fails? Tell me seriously?

I'm using Hepco Main Stand.

u can look at hyperpro rear shock... it has some good reviews too.

u may also wan to look at changing ur front fork spring to more progressive spring for better feedback...

even when your chain tension is perfectly right, your chain doesn't go in a straight line when you ride, it will move or 'jump' up and down hence hitting your main stand. needless to say when going on rough terrain it will 'jump more vigorously. next time take a look at other bikes at the chain while on the road, you'll get what i mean.

In case anyone is interested to know the fuel consumption of my trip, I used 73.34L of petrol for 1469.4km. It works out to 20km/L for 2-up with full luggage on a DL650. That gives a theoretical full tank (22L) range of 440km.

Hope this helps in planning your fuel stops in your touring trips.

Hope DL1000 owners can give their figures to help somasundram in his question.

Check this out:

Barracuda,

My Strom 1000 is doing about 16~17 km/litre on Singapore road. Ride the bike hard constantly on N-S highway, I'm getting about 14 plus km/litre.

Your Strom 650 is running on twin spark / cylinder?
