all other R1 use INLINE 4 V5 engine only 07 use V4

i guess only whether the V4 engine come from the honda enginner who jump ship with rossi to yamaha

that's the number of valves! (the 4 vs 5)

not arrangement of the cylinders into a V-shape.

 

usually when people say V2 or V4 the letter refers to the cylinder arrangement and the number refers to the number of cylinders. e.g. RVF, ST11, STX are V4s and harleys and ducatis are V2s.

Correct. R1 used to use 5 valves per cylinder, and reduced to 4 valves per cylinder in 2007. Other makes have been using 4 valves per cylinder.
