Well, Generally the Garmin GPS units are waterproof so long as they have the IPX7 standard which I remember is something like under a metre of water for at least half or an hour. Most eTrax units are rated such.

Most people go to Perfect Watch at Sim Lim Square.

My recommendation :

For bike, Garmin 60Csx

For Car, Garmin Nuvi 610

If you will be looking at the unit while riding, may want to consider Garmin Quest or 60Csx at that price range.

You may consider a new Garmin model, Vista HCx

Sensitivity is apparently on par with 60Csx

Difference with 60Csx: different control, no external antenna connection.

It is not available in Singapore yet. However, you can order from US.

I recieved mine a few days ago. The total price I paid including shipping and GST was around 480

If that's in SGD, that's a fantastic price.

You can get the 60Csx for between SGD640 - SGD680 in Singapore, depending on the microSD card

Posted

Yes, the price is in SGD. But the card is not in the price, sorry.

So you will have to spend 25-50 more on 1 or 2 Gb card

But you may save a bit on shipping and GST, if you order from Amazon and use free shipping to ship to vPost then the FOB price will be less than 400 and you will not pay GST.

Realistic price in this case without card will be around 430. But it will take a month to deliver

Ya, also ordered the HCx. Wanted the old Vista Cx then heard about the acquisition lag. Am so so pleased when the HCx was announced. Waiting for it to be carried back from the States by a friend. Yes, the GST was a put-off to internet orders. Please ensure that the US purchase carries an International Warranty, although I understand that we still have to send it to be serviced in Taiwan.

Here's the link to the Vista HCx specs

60CSX you can get from Hoan Enterprise (Sim Lim TOWER - 1st floor) and Perfect Watches (Sim Lim SQUARE)

If got extra cash..go for the Zumo 550 (Perfect Watches - 1st floor)

You will probably need bike mount for 60CSX (see back pages on this thread). The Zumo 550 comes with car and bike mount

Anyway you can get gps also from overseas website - maybe evern cheaper

Each model of GPS has it's unique graphic user interface. Even for same brand, but different model, they can also be different, such as between Garmin 60Csx, and the Garmin Nuvi series.

However, if you know how to use a pc to read this forum, then I can assure you that you are definitely capable of operating any GPS.

;3237991']i noob to gps. any idea wats the model for the hand held garmin set?

how much will i cost me?

a simple black & white set with no maps capability is less than $300. But I wouldn't advise you to start with.

Novice GPS users experience very fast learning curve, so if you buy a very basic model, you will get bored fast as you will find inadequate, in terms of functionality, for your usage soon.

Start with a color, with maps, such as Garmin Legend Cx, about $420.

Is it safe to purchase a Garmin or other GPS from States/Europe? i.e. will they work here? Or do they need some kind of unlock or whatever?

Vice versa, can the GPS bought here be used in the States?

GPS - Global Position System.

All GPS will work anywhere as long as it's on earth, and you can see the sky regardless the location of purchase.

The only advantage if you buy in the region is that sometimes the GPS come with maps installed of that region. By now, most of the GPS have the ability of add maps, so it's no big deal.

Look further up the thread, got posted places to buy already about a week ago.

To the GPS gurus .. when I power the etrax with USB power with batteries inside, I assume that the unit only feeding off the USB? or must I take out the batt? Will go look for Lithium Ion rechargeable later.

Cheers

Not a problem to power up the etrax even with batteries loaded but the USB power does not charge the batteries.

There is a selection feature within whereby it can switch to battery once USB power source is lost. This is useful if the power source on your bike is ignition dependent, so the GPS need not do a re-search whenever you off your ignition.

Like wat Demon had said is right, gps works here even u bought it in US.How abt the price range. As i know they r many price range.I heard there is also a refurbished set or maybe upgrade set.First of all how to know aft purchased it whether its upgrade or refurbished set.

Posted

Not sure whether how to tell refurbished set, but US sets definitely cheaper. Only thing is that it seems that gotta send to Taiwan for repair if there is any fault, at your own shipping. I bought my HCx online, simply because it is not yet available here. Got a buddy to carry to back for me.

Not bad, learning a lot now. I am sure will learn more when we meet the gurus at a meet up .... (hint) (hint)
