Can you tell me where to buy the Garmin Zumo 550 in Singapore ?

Cheers

HH

I got my set a little cheaper than the prices quoted here in Singapore.

I probably did not look hard enough! Best price i got here in Singapore for the ZUMO 550 is SGD1255.

The cheapest prices are those acquired online and from the States!! Only thin gis that if there is any issues and you want to exercise youe warranty... the set have to be sent to the States.

I got mine from a distributor in JB! A little cheaper than in Singapore and some would say it is not worth the effort... but it did give me an excuse to ride.....lol

Do drop me a PM if you are keen..... remember the savings not gonna impress you too much!!!

This thing sure has better specs than my legend CX. Except I don't like the 3 or 4hr usage rechargeable battery - unless the bike got a build-in battery charger for long distance touring.

The below are the "must-have" features in my opinion:-

1) Auto-routing & direction prompting.

2) Battery powered is good, coz can replace it instantly. Mine the power consumption is extremely good even with backlight on - about 10 hrs I think. Some models are battery suckers ; which is bad - you need to research from forums which models are battery suckers.

4) Memory expansion slot is a must.

5) Able to see screen in bright sunlight.

6) Must be color screen - so can see the different symbols & routes clearly.

The other features such as 3D maps etc are just "good to have".

cheers

I use "Sendmap20" to combine two or more "IMG" files.

First, you have to determine if the Bangkok map is not locked, either to the GPS, or the SD Card.

Chubb, what GPS are you using, and how many IMG files you have in it ? ;)

You plan to use it on road or at sea ?

With Selectivity Availability (SA) removed in 2000, consumer grade GPS can achieve a consistent accuracy of 10m. DGPS would probably reduce this error to below 2m. Typically only the military would need such accuracy.

When using road maps, malsing or garmin, the GPS will lock onto the road if "FOLLOW ROAD" is enabled. So if you have physically deviated from the road by 5m (as an example), you location on the GPS will still remain the same because of this feature. Thus it would negate the accuracy of DGPS.

;)

Hiya, Guys.

Bear with me, I am not a regular visitor to MalSing so I am a bit slow here. I have the Jan 2008 version of the MalSing map for Garmin. Now there is a ver. 2.29 installer which "is for viewing purposes on your pc. Maps are locked and are NOT meant to be transfered and used in gps devices."

http://www.malsingmaps.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=33

So is this a map update? If not then what does it do? Just back from Kuantan, the GPS was a lifesaver!!!!

Cheers

Whenever there is a map update, Malsingmap (MSM) will always release two versions.

This version is available to all members of MSM but only for installation into Mapsource. The file names are :

- GM-Borneo.rar

- GM-MySin.rar

Then there is other version which is only visible to contributors, the files are

- GM-MySinG.rar

- GM-BorneoG.rar

These files, when unlocked, can be installed into GPS.

The "G" stands for Gold Installer

So is this a map update? If not then what does it do?

This map update for use in Mapsource serve these purpose :

- all members providing feedbacks on the same version

- allow members to make contributions to gain unlock codes

:)

Jan 2008 is Ver 2.15, and subsequent to that there are three newer releases, namely, Apr - Ver 2.17; Jul - Ver 2.18; and the latest one is Aug - Ver 2.19. Since Ver 2.15, there are no "Free" map releases.

Although yours is 3 versions behind but that shouldn't be a concern

Has anyone tried getting the cheaper car style gps, wider screen, then fitting it in the waterproof casing seen on ram mount sites and attaching those to the bike?

those waterproof casings have a thin membrane that allows u to read the display and operate thru it. it was designed for ipod and similar uses.

anybody?

IHMO not much savings. Those cases are not cheap; plus freight etc; just get a waterproof one and be done with it. Less parts = less hassle IMHO.

Why dont you take a look at the Garmin nuvi 5xx series, they are supposed to be water proof.

Look here and click

With this, you dont need any waterproofing and the screen is larger then a handheld set.

Not yet in Singapore. It was only launched last month in US

how much is this nüvi® 500?

$500?

Official price is USD499, but some online retailers in US are selling as low as USD399 before shipping.

What makes Garmin GPS so popular with hobbyists is the online map support, especially fortunate for us to have free maps support from Malsingmap. But the same couldn't be said for other GPS makers such as Tibo, Shinco.

Yes, im aware of the map support from malsisngmap.

previously, on my pda, i have garmin and have spent hours trying to download and get malsing maps to work but it was all a nightmare!

im not sure how easy it is with the garmin gps for car/bike.

not wanting to spend $700sin or more and repeat the same nightmare.

are the malsin maps similar to agis/mapking with 3D icons and graphics or is it just the simple 2D flat layout displayed?

Which PDA you have that gave you so much problem with garmin maps ?

For Garmin GPS, using MSM maps, it's as simple as drag and drop.

All maps are created differently, and individual preference is very subjective. What matters most to me is the accuracy, currentness and affordability, best if it's free :D

Some Garmin models such as the Nuvi, Zumo are capable of 3D, and 2D while other models such as the eTrex, and GSMAP series are only 2D.

Personally I prefer 2D, even on my Nuvi.

maybe one day when someone conducts a DIY session that I can attend and learn this garmin magic :p
