best deal for nuvi 550 is from amazon.com... i was at the point of ordering but my old gps "failed" and i needed a replacement urgently :(

if buy from amazon.com

... gps set nuvi 550 US$255.87 @1.54 +1.5% fee = approx. S$400

... trek bike mount include shipping = US13 @1.54 +1.5% = approx. S$13.20

(same type as the one given by eastgear)

then ship to vpostusa (your vpost a/c shipping address)

... postage to singapore estimated at S$35

maps

... preinstalled with US map

... download malfree or malsing maps free

total cost estimated at S$448, much is pending on exchange rates charged by visa. cost add S$50 if you choose to buy the jerome map :p i.e. savings could range from about S$120 to $70 depending on whether you use free maps.

just sharing my pre-purchase estimates... you could get it cheaper with better exchange rates

Mustafa doesn't carry Ram-Mount. He could have mistaken those phone holder with sucker selling at Mustafa are generically known as ram-mount.

Ram-Mount is a registered trade mark.

Alamak! Then how, is the nuvi 550 tested by you to be shockproof?

Maybe shock proof to a certain degree when you drop it. but not from a scooter on the expressway and then gets run over by cars.. dun think any commercial GPS unit in the market could have survived that. :cheeky:

I was more concerned that those vehicles trying to avoid the GPS might cause an accident as a result :giddy:

If can wait...order from US lor. If cannot wait then its them. Now US$ dropping heheh.

i'm also worried about that happening... especially along dark stretches of NS when touring up north.

very tempted to use resin glue to stick a secure/strong point on the unit's plastic body (won't damage waterproofing) so that i can hook a lanyard to the GPS unit. if it comes off the mount (or together with mount), at least it'll be dangling by the lanyard and not straight onto the roads.

looks aside, i'm worried about voiding the warranty... need to check

currently securing a lanyard to the mount but the worry is where lanyard holds the mount, but unit comes off the mount :faint:

If you are using the Ram-Mount with the Nuvi550 holder, there is no way the GPS is going to fly off.

I had wanted to secure a lanyard to the mount and I think that would have prevented it from falling off onto the road but I was too lazy to get down to it and finally paid the price . I had to learn the hard way.

On hindsight, I should have used the dashboard disc that came with it. It would have made it a better platform to secure the unit than rely the wind screen which is not completely flat. Still the best option is to get a proper mount for it.

The few days I did not have my GPS it was kinda weird. Not that I rely on it all the time but it sort of provided me with some form of 'entertainment and company' , as though there is someone with you and you are not travelling alone.. you may call it HTC or 'High Tech Companion' :cheeky:

However it may become an annoyance if its in the car when you have the stereo for 'company' instead.. ha ha
