btw, my next move is to backup the preloaded US maps in the ROM and put MSM/MFM in it so that i can have thailand map in the mSD :thumb:

You will have problems if you install both MSM, and MFM at the same time in your device because the boundaries of both map tiles are different.

Firstly, you will find the roads, somewhere north of Johor cannot be display. Secondly, there are no interconnecting route between the two maps, so you will have problem navigating.

i also bought a nuvi 550 from eastgear, came with a 2gb mSD with MSM but i'm now using MFM. no harm giving it a try coz its free (unlike the jerome versions). you'll find some differences, wouldn't say which is better... you should try n decide for yourselves :p

I want to remove the MSMaps completely from the system and replaced it with MFM. Cos I had been using it on my other GPS eversince they started. Just got back from KL last weekend, navigate in KL using MFM on the GPS is a breeze.

i used MSM for my trip to seremban/port dickson/melaka and it took me "merry go round" at one area in seremban (turns about then end up at same junction) before continuing on the desired route :faint: thus decided to give MFM a try :p

to use map from another source, we can either:

(a) use another mSD card

(b) use the same mSD card but create a different folder for the unused map

the garmin firmware looks for map file (e.g. Gmapsupp.img) in a specific folder named "garmin" in the mSD. if we put MSM in folder called "garmin-spare" and MFM in "garmin", firmware will pick up MFM. hope this helps.

anyone got routable thailand map to share? :cheeky:

Another thing that pisses me off is this person with a gay sounding name "Jerome Wee" spamming his name everywhere. I want to see the address of my destination, not his name!

He owns the copyright of the maps, it would be his right to put his name anywhere. And putting your ownership on your property is not spamming.

if you despise that name so much, you can use the NT2009.3 map as that an official Garmin release.l

It's downright rude to generalise a person's name to be gay. Do the right thing and retract your unnecessary comment.

To an average user, no difference. Both maps will get you to your destination.

MSM maps being around longer, has more details for rural areas which will be useful for dirt-bikers looking for trails. For city, both are comparable.

Some distinct differences are :

MSM now supports Junction View, which will be another useful feature for new GPS users, and make navigation more idiot proof.

MFM has added polygons to their maps. MFM has topo map interface which will be useful for trekkers.

what's the story? thanks

MSM has preferred to maintain silence on the departure of their key members which broke away to form MFM.

Here is MFM's side to the story.

Hi, thanks for the update on MFM and MSM everyone. I think it's only going to be good for all users going forwards now that the latest maps are free for anyone to download. That's the spirit.

Any reviews here for Nuvi 205W?

This is an entry model GPS for cars. Will do a fine job without the bells and whistles.

How much should I offer for a 2 week old set, or should I even make an offer for it at all?

Put it this way. You can order from Amazon, a brand new Nuvi 205W, and shipped to Singapore for less than SGD250, and the price is falling every week.

The nuvi 200 series has been around for about 2 yrs, and they will be replaced by the new nuvi 1000 series which are the ultra-slim version.

Desperate call for help!!

my 205w decided to play up today before a road trip this wkend.

when plugging in the mini usb end to pwr/recharge the gps, pc wont detect and it wont power up.

Ive got to turn it on manually.

Then, it doesnt charge!

And a menu pops up saying something like,"Accessory not recognised."

Wanted to do a reset or reupdate the firmware but to no avail.

Batt is now completely flat and the PC cant detect it nor can I pwr on.

Went to Perfect Watch for some help but I was just redirected to All Bright.

The 2 guys at All Bright dont have a clue or a loan set for me, they just said they will send it to Taiwan for a few weeks.

Anyone with any clues whats happening?

Sounds like comm failure. Could be :

- PC's USB port faiilure

- USB cable failure

- GPS's USB port failure.

How come Perfect Watch directed you to AllBright ? Typically if it's a warranty claim, it should be directed to Navicomm who is the official Garmin local dealer.

Eastgear is also able to repair the nuvi too.

I have tried this on several pcs using different usb cables.

My Nuvi has the ABT sticker on the back so I guess AllBright is their official agt for P.Watch?

Going to Eastgear first thing tmrw morning, hope they will repair Garmin sets not purchased from them.

Hope I get better service there, P.W. is disappointing.
