Hi guys, need a great favour from you'll... I just bought an xjr 400 FV plate.. realise that the idling sound got a grinding sound very loud.. brought it to Hua Chin at bukit batok.. say clutch housing loose and normal...

If to change

- clutch housing or tighten it ( price and workshop recommended?)

- tappet or valve clearance to adjust ( price and workshop recommended?)

Thanks to all xjr riders! hope to join u guys soon once i get my bike sorted out...!

Life is a journey... The journey can be boring or fun... Its all up to u!

Ride Fast but Safe! Both can be achieved, if u take moderate risk and not MAXIMUM risk!

hi vijayi,

cluch housing noisy?

a new clutch housing costs about $220 & it may eliminate the grinding sound but it may come back after some time...thus i did not replace mine.

tappet clearence?

i have mine done in 05 costing betw $180-$220 to re-set the tappet timings.

hi xjrredbull, by doing the tappet clearance will it help? i am sceptical abt it cos i went to one shop say.. do also same one.. whats ur experience after doing?

obviously the bike would be a little quieter after the servicing of tappets. I done so becos my tappets was noisy then.

BUT 'grinding' noise from the clutch housing is another. Some mechs would recommend a replacement, others just brush it aside.

Generally, the bike is a little noisy so don't need to fret.

Like i was saying, i didnt replace my clutch housing cos the noise is bearable to me after all this years, so i have no problems on that. Just my two cents worth.

HI guys.

i Just want to have a general list abt the maintenance of our beloved XJR400/1300.

Basically around how long/mileage before you decide you would maintain ur bike, as in Oil Change, Chain & SProcket Change, Oil FIlter ... etc. The list goes on.

Let me start the ball rolling.

XJR400

General Oil Change - Once my Mileage hits 3000km.

Oil Filter - ???

Chain & Sprocket - Until I see that the gear teeth are abnormal

Clutch/Brake Cables - ???

Gasket - ???

Tyre Change - ???

Pls feel free to add on to the list and also, do add in the recommended time/mileage for the ones in "???".

tappet may not be the problem bro. but if you wanna change can oder part from LAB coz their stocks come faster than oem supplier. May be i will also try to diy coz according to koko when you open the clutch side of the gear box no eo will leak and u can see the assy frm there.our bikes need to do valve clearance occationally may be every 3-5years.so far heard mechanic aka Ah lai did a splendid tune for koko down @ ubi.Bad tuning of the carb may also cause the rough sound coz 1 or more of the cylinders got no petrol supply.

This is my preference

XJR400

General Oil Change - Once my Mileage hits 10k km or gear change gets difficult.

Oil Filter - best every 10k km

Chain & Sprocket - Until I see that the gear teeth are abnormal(I agree)

But 1 thing abt our sprockets is same as most italian model bike.99.9% fit.

Im still tryin to understand the sprocket adjustment in proper coz i adjust on accuracy of 0.01microns with vernier callipers.just an advice 2t is really good for chain lub coz of its extreme cooling power.

Clutch/Brake Cables - clutch cables are wires as long as u can get to grease it may last u for ever use cable grease but try not to use wd40.for brake are hydraulic oil system so no need to worry as long as no leak.

Gasket - our bikes only got 1 gasket that needs attention-Cam cover. this 1 is super sensitive. pls use liquid gasket when you assemble it cos must make sure it seats properly at cam cover then re apply liquid gasket to bottom of gasket which will contact the block.after fixed the liquid gasket will create extra leak resistance when it sticks to both block n cam cover. Than if you look from right side of bike the clutch cover is the 1 where u topup eo from

that got gasket but the smaller infront of the clutch cover got no gasket if the smaller 1 leak just apply liquid gasket maker n ure done. usual life spend of gaskets may last for years.

Tyre Change - i ride my bike for 2 years n not yet change but now botak leow if im not wrong the threads must not be lower than 1.6mm but thats really up to ur preference just dont get summoned

Hi happy125,

There is is only 3 units only for this model. Two black, own by European guys n 1 light blue n that is me.I' ve ridden the xjr 400 way back 1997 but then I tot of not owning another xjr but fall in love with the early 1200 model n waited. Patience paid of with this monstrous bike. Need no extra gadget to power-up. It is powerful enough....'agitated when provoked'. I traded my Diversion for this bike while thinking, from shaft driven to chain driven. Ah, what the hack....'live to ride'......:thumb:

Hi happy 125,

U made a very good choice. Not suits yr bike but all YAMAHA bikes. Motul is recommended. It is either semi or fully synthetic oil. To all xjr or YAMMY owners, try to stick one brand of engine oil.Don't try brand 'A' then the next brand 'B' n so forth. No good for the engine as they could not adapt the reaction of the oil. Also if there is too many brands in the engine, you gasket will leak n how I hate engine top block leaking:angry: I've been using MOTUL since I ride YAMMY bikes.Never opt for other engine oil brands. We made comparison n not surprising that my engine sound quieter than others Yammy.:thumb: Do you know that MOTUL was appointed by YAMAHA RACING to produce engine oil for their bikes in 2002.They r still using it under the name of YAMALUBE. If u notice that most of the engine oil r produce here. Whereas MOTUL is made in France. So guys ,some tips are given n it is all up to.....o_O

Guys there is a new thread under bike specs n reviews debating abt s4 n xjr again but this time is really quite tuff....

really hate it when it comes to home work...coz i only do R N D at work when i really need to..but people in this thread really knocked on the devils door too long n eventually had me done my R N D home...aka the devil opened the door and answered.

you r right bro but in my engine the pressure rises quite slow and had me tested quite a number of brands to help the pressure rise faster. Did have the intent to try YAMALUBE but 1 mechanic told me they stop production already. mayb motul works better in 1300 engine but for me it felt rough in only 1 week.and the level decreases faster at some point of time in my ride so i donot recomend for the 400cc. so far amsoil has given me the flexibility to stretch is life abit longer coz my style of riding is on the high rpm side.

around march next yr will send bike in for valve clearance n overhaul coz eager to feel the bikes top performance like never b4..hehe
