Speed is a figure of easier comparison.

Of course, subjected to externalities, eg. stock/modded, road surface, tyre sizes & pressures, atmospheric conditions and so on........but not to split hairs here as my bike is completely stock and I thought it will be a good comparison for people with mods.......

Anywayz, was wanting to find out from people who have changed sprocket sizes & what sizes did they swap to, was the improvement in acceleration worth losing top speed?

Mine was changed from 17-39 to 16-42, acceleration was much better throughout low-mid range on my bike using the milo kong, will update again when i put on my arrows and 34mm carb.Thinking of changing to a 16-40 or 16-41 if it does not work out.

If you ask me, is top end important?I would say it is, but not as important compared to acceleration, if top end is what you want, i don't think RS satisfies that.Torque, useable powerband and handling(down the forks through the yokes-subjective) is what i want more for my bike.

I don't think this is off topic at all Ben, and I've been thinking about this as well. Even though my rear shock's fine, the fact that Law went through several brand new rear shocks in the span of months makes me want to plan for a replacement when my shock inevitably fails. It also makes me question if it's worth it to buy an original rear shock if it's not durable - could be penny-wise, pound-foolish. I'm thinking of a WP rear shock, and if I do get it it'll be around Jan-Feb next year. Anyone else interested at this early stage can discuss either here or by PM cuz, like I said, I don't consider it off topic.

I've been meaning to post this and since it's a strange hour and I'm still awake, it's as good a time as any:

CDI Restriction

The current consensus seems to be that the environmentally-friendly CDI restriction between 5k-6k rpm that European Y2K riders talk about doesn't apply to us in Singapore. This has been my suspicion for a while, and evidence to support it includes:

  • Me still having a flat spot even when using a so-called race CDI
  • Me getting rid of that flat spot by re-jetting
  • Lawrence getting rid of the flat spot in Christina's Y2K by careful tuning
  • Others, including eyz, having flat spots even though their models aren't supposed to have CDI restrictions

Ben, have you ever had a flat spot in your bike's powerband?

Thumbs up for fish head curry Marcus, for sure! :thumb: But since we're not organising, we'll just leave it as a suggestion and let Vivi decide lah.

Actually, what i meant was seperate topic, but since there is no "another topic" smiley, i just put in the "off topic" smiley.haha.

Anyway, moving on to the serious stuff, I'm trying to get the shocks hopefully by August as i am trying to meet a dateline so chris if you can try & get the shocks by august?(save ur bonus for the shocks la! don't spend it on the HUD thing).I need at least 2 more people, anyone interested PM me or chris.

Always be prepared.

I used to have it when my bike was tuned at Ideal, but recently after retuning it at a different mech shop, i did not have the flatspot anymore, its smooth acceleration up all the way now(for a moment i thot i was riding a honda).... about the enviro cdi restriction, i doubt our cdi's have it but from what i've read in the UK forums, even if you have it you can bypass it by cutting specific wires.

Always be prepared.

Like that ah, I think you guys go ahead first, plus since I'm considering WP shocks, it won't help to order together, right?

Sounds like another example to back up the theory that we don't have CDI restrictions for Singapore RS125s. No need to change CDI or derestrict, just tune properly can already. About the derestriction method (breaking the circuit board bridge) - it's controversial, but it looks like we don't have to worry about it anyway.

ben , wat rear shock u have in mind and the cost , can order in september... i am thinking of either air burner or steel braided brake lines upgrade this month...

Hmm, intriguing suggestion Alex. I'm not sure it would work though, and I don't think anyone would dare to try since the Y2K engine does seem to be unque in several ways. Anyhow, I don't think there are any restrictions in Y2K CDIs, as I mentioned earlier. About pulling to 13k rpm - the CDI problem is supposed to be flat spots in the middle of the rev range, and isn't supposed to affect the high end.

Well so far i only heard of restrictions to high rpm.... y would they wanna restrict at mid rpm? ever tot of that?o_O

And if i remembered correctly for my 125.. for 5 to 6 u have to open a bit more then normal for smoother power and my friend's 125 put v force reeds and a after market exhaust proves to wipe off the flat spot:thumb:

Edwin, if you getting air burner, are you getting it from First Motor? Roughly how much ah?

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing the point of mid-rpm restrictions is so that when they're measuring emissions while crusing at highways speeds, there's a dip in emissions - passing the tests by cheating at the right places.

The point of a truly smooth powerband is to not have flat spots even with small throttle openings. If you had to open your throttle quite wide to have a smooth powerband, that means you still had a flat spot. Just curious, which generation RS125 did you own?

As for the mods you mentioned - my experience is that they don't completely eliminate flat spots, only reduce them. Carburetion seems to be the key.

Hmm, do you happen to know whats the shop name?

Chris: The WP shocks if we order together might be cheaper, ill go check it out.

Edwin:Either WP or bitupo-price range from 500 to 900.LOL, seems like air burner is now the "in" thing.

Always be prepared.

Teck Thye (supposedly can look for someone called David Ong)

12 Braddell Rd

Tel: 62803138

500-900 for the shocks, hmm, not cheap, but cheaper than I feared - I'd be willing to pay that much, I think.

Air burner... I think I'll let Edwin be the test dummy this time, heheh :cheeky:

Ben, 17-39 is the original gearing on the bike from the factory or was it like that when you bought it?

Just a rough ballpark figure, how much did you lose in the top end? 20km/h?

Im tired of getting out accelerated by scooters when I dont stall up on the revs.

:nono:

Ben, if ure going by Racewerk, could you kindly get me a can of Maxima chain lube? Tks mate, will collect from you at a civilised hour.

Stock is 17-40. I lost 7km/h at 7k rpm in 6th (107km/h down to 100km/h), when going from 17-38 to 16-38 (the equivalent of 17-41, one up from stock on the rear sprocket). Lost 20km/h at 10k rpm in 5th (160km/h dwon to 140km/h).

Thats a fair chunk of the top end.

I will consider if its worth doing.

Lawerence was telling me about your "heat" issues.

Did you manage resolve them?

My gauge is reading at about 78 most of the time, reaching 87 in heavy traffic with pillion. We swapped coolant 2x and the problem is still there.

Even doing 90 on the freeway for 10mins or so, the temp never drops below 76.

I wondered if its because of the running in of the bike that causes the temp raise.

Before, it used to read about 78 at the highest.
