There would only be a point in mass ordering them if we could get a discount, and I'm under the impression that Biketech wouldn't give us one. Then again, no harm trying. gilakia, what do you think?

Oh yah, sorry for not replying, forgot lah - the electrical problems still aren't sorted out despite me following Aprilia's own wiring schematics, so I sent my bike to NTrust for them to figure out. I got myself a brand new gear lever from Ideal already so I don't need your old bent one. I'll still be getting the used gear lever from gonggong though. I'll be buying brand-new triangle rearset brackets from Ideal too, maybe tomorrow morning.

It's ok. So you still can't start your bike? Then how you ride back to Singapore? Tow back?

saw a fz plate tuono today being tow to the malaysia custom wanted to approach to help but u push into the motorcycle lane already hope u are all right.

wah lao eh.

this could be a long story.. . wanted to "go for lunch" at melaka, so on a whim, packed, suited up, and went onto NSH. i was thinking: 200+ km only what, what could happen?

eventually, at the 192.6 km marker and about 3km to the exit to melaka, my revs suddenly skyrocketed, the bike sounded like someone set off fireworks in the engine, then it died. Then my frickin rear wheel LOCKED!

yes, it was a piston jam.

luckily for me, there were no vehicles around me at that time; luckily for me i had a friend who told me old school 2stroker riding 'tradition' was to cover clutch lever in case piston jam - and quickly clutch in when the rear wheel locked (i was not covering it though, and there was a second of wheel lock while i was thinking what was going on before i clutched in - i had thought it was simple running out of fuel). luckily for me i was within 200m of an emergency phone. Luckily for me the road was bone dry. So, no skid, so fishtail, not a single scratch on the bike.

anyway. called, waited 20 minutes for a PLUS truck to show up, getting horribly bitten by mozzies in the process. The truck could not help me as it was for immediate (small scale) assistance only; and then an hour later, a tow truck with crane arrived, which, on the process of hoisting my bike onto the truck, scratched off some paint from my front fairing (arrghg!), then began the long slow trip back, u-turn at melaka exit, then going at 60-70 km/h and finally reaching JB at 7++, getting caught in the jam, and getting scared when unloading the bike in case the thing scratched again.

the scary part came when the truck driver decided to cut the seatbelt which served as safety rope for the fronk fork area. he decided to cut it WITH A PARANG! not kidding - that thing was like a 12 inch blade, and he proceeded to start rubbing the blade up and down the seatbelt while i desperately pulled aside the cables and hoped that he did not manage to score the frame. I gave up and shouted to him to get a screwdriver, which eventually he did, and so my bike did not get another scar (phew)

then began the push from JB across the causeway to the BKE exit. wa lao - don't trust what they say about Dainese Goretex pants being breathable; yes for small amounts of perspiration, but when one is sweating buckets like i did, those things become plastic bags! admittedly, this was not the designed intention for those pants, but then. ..

anyway, i got so dehydrated i was practically begging the customs checkpoint officers for water, which i eventually got from a cooler that had a jet that rose all of 2cm. sucking at that miserable stream, i realised i have hardly felt as desperate as this. pushed it down the ramp to the BKE/city part of the expressway where bikebulance could come pick the bike up, and then within 5 minutes (i arranged while clearing customs) i was picked up and thankfully Ben had a bottle of water which i practically finished almost 1L on the spot. (thanks Ben!)

So, what is the moral of the story? i dunno. it kinda feels wierd that a modern liquid cooled 2 stroke can piston jam so easily. and i had not been fiddling around with the engine. i'm kinda disappointed at the bike's durability. it kinda sucks to have to sit on the truck; perhaps what i'll say is that 2T bikes are not particularly suited for high speed touring; oh and for the bro who wanted to help - thanks, but unless you would push the bike along with me, there was nothing that could be done to it. no offence intended :)

Dude did you maintain constant rpms the whole way?

still love the bike. think it's handling tops anything else in 2B; not as if i tried out everything, but i am pretty confident that there are very few competitors.

think i just have to adjust my mindset regarding how much i can push a 2B bike.

um.

as far as i could remember, i think i was maintaining a relatively high rpm for quite some time, say 80% of the time i was on the NSH, which was perhaps max 2+ hours before the seizure.

i did remember pulling into pagoh and hearing a very odd sound coming from the bike, seems to be from the left side, sounded like something was loose and rattling inside.

why? can't bikes run continually? :giddy:

dun think its that unreliable maybe u should bring down to mah and get them to check it. something wrong with 2t pump or soemthing?

um, at this point, it is no longer a "go and check"; it's probably gonna be a overhaul.

yeah, i think something could be wrong with the pump: my exhaust very clean, almost like 4T bike. . .

Posted

There are many possibilities....

1)2T not enough, did you check your 2T level? or 2T pump is on the lean side

2)Perhaps the bike was not run in properly and you whack too much?

3)Or perhaps you never let it rest after 100km? IMO, i think 2stroke bike cant travel long without rest. Ralf went up to sepang recently with some rs125 and mitos and there wasnt any problem.

I've read a theory that 2stroke bikes can't run continually at the same rpm for extended periods of time. This is due to the recirculation of exhaust gasses in the combustion chamber. Running at the same rpm will lead to hotspots developing, and the temperatures will continue to rise until the piston jams. This theory could explain why piston seizures can happen at relatively low rpms as well.

How true this is, i don't know. But i've always made it a point vary my rpms and throttle positions on long rides. Heck, we (3 aprilias and 2 mitos) made it to sepang and back without anything going wrong. We did stop at every petrol station to take a break and top up petrol though.

It might be due to this, or maybe your 2t pump went wonky.

Hmm..that might explain why when I travel on PIE/ECP, though i remain at 90km/h, my temp sometimes can climb from 76 to 78 towards when i exit the highway.

Damn didn't see you there. I did the 9-10 session and hung around till 11. The bracket probably gave way because of vibrations. Metal fatigue.

The bike makes so much sense on track, and i'm still riding with the leaky fork seals and wonky brake pump. Can't imagine it all fixed up.

Planning on a weekday session sometime next week or the week after, no track days or free weekends in november =(
