redname...i was just pulling his leg. Unfortunately, I don't wanna be charged with manslaughter so the abovementioned was just a proverb.

 

Anyhoo, since this is a new lappie, I decided to tackle the specs and pre-installed software first, before drilling down to the stuff that you've got installed.

Here are my concerns listed below; feel free to review each and every-one of them and pick what you think may be relevant to your problem:

 

Virus & Tool Software Nortonâ„¢ Internet Security 2006

Do you still have this installed? Many that have used it agree that this software is a hog and it makes computers perform sluggishly (read)

I can vouch for its slowness and I vehemently stay away from it. I can't stand this AV software.....

 

NERO 7 Essentials

While this CD-burning software suite isn't much of a concern, it comes bundled with Nero MediaHome. If you open this or if automatically starts, this app runs in the background, and it lets other computers on your network connect to it to view (and stream) photos, videos, or whatever multimedia files you have on your computer.

However, if you don't find any particular use on this app, close this application.

He's right to a certain extent. Notebooks equipped with older SDRAM memory will slow the PC down a bit. It's by design. And if the notebook that you're using can only support this type of memory, you may have to stick with that lappie for the time being; go ahead and find other possible ways to speed up your lappie.

While these nice to have as value-added applications, manufacturer-supplied "courtesy software" like these may slow down a computer if they are set to automatically run in the background, sit and stay on your System Tray on the bottom right of your screen for the duration of your lappie use.

Some of them are useful, maybe some are required and you can't just quit it, or some are simply not needed and it may free up your computer a bit if you close them. Use discretion on what you need and what you don't.

No offense to Vista here, but this is one of the operating systems that, as you go along using your PC and installing software as time goes by, is notorious for being super slow.

 

That's all that I can think of for a person that has just jumped onboard using a brand new laptop.

reformat ur pc with win xp pro 32 bit and configure your services.msc in tune with blackviper's safe recommendations. just install the motherboard drivers and processor utilities, don't touch the . install your fav antivirus and firewall then defrag the drive. search for blackviper's windows site with google..

vista looks nice visually, all that nice eye candy comes at the cost of processing speed. personally, i use xp 32 bit on my 64 FX62 AMD dual core. all windows visual effects like shadow la smooth edges la all disabled, all nonsense software bundled with the mobo drivers also uninstalled. it's the bare minimum with antivirus, firewall and norton utilities (i like the norton disk defrag and system check, works much better than window's system tools). unnecessary windows servcies are disabled too. just search for 'blackviper windows' in google, he has a list of services that you can disable to free up processing and speed up the pc.
