Well, they have many bikes and many manuals to read, so may not be familiar with some details for each bike.

Most mech will follow their past knowledge of using gear oil for gears. Sounds correct and safe, right?

But we (most of us) stand by our own 'eyes' and tried and tested experiences too. Follow manual where can go wrong?

Some may disagree with me because sometimes gear oil don't seem to have any problem in local riding.

In my opinion, gear oil may be ok for local riding but never a good choice when prolonged distance riding overseas.

Anyway, each his own so ultimately it is still owner's decision.

As for Boon Siew's service cost... eventhough they waived service charges (for new bikes), you will still have to pay for other essentials. The cost is similar if done at other bike shops (around 3x EO $69 and oil filter $18).

Once the service charge kick in... butt tear will occur.

the mechs there may call it gear oil or whatever, but the 10w30 motor oil they use should be a SAE multi-grade engine oil and not SAE gear oil... there is no 10w30 multi-grade gear oil under the SAE grade system.

see the SAE table below under the Gear Oil column.

i share the same opinion.

as for whether $87 is expensive for engine oil and oil filter change, it very much depends on what oil is used. suppose BS is still using Castrol Power RS 4T as default oil, then i'ld say its on the expensive side... 2.6L x around $18/bott, you work the sums. if they use motul 300v (fat hope), then its a very good price.

like SW9000 said, if add on labour charge... standby to be chai tow :faint:

is a plate of $25 seafood fried rice with basmati rice, abalone, lobster, fresh fish and oysters considered more expensive than a plate of $2.50 fried rice with nothing but an egg?

to many, its all about what you get for the price paid :p

When you buy brand new bike, and you want the agent warranty, you gotta go to them for the first 2 services. So, just bear with it, and use the gear oil. So long you don't do long distance riding, it wouldn't be a problem.

after your second service, you should be able to service it anywhere else liao. Worse case scenario, open your service manual, and argue with them lo. But I doubt you will have any luck.

For every new bike, you have this warranty/service log card.

You must get it stamped for the 1st 3 services done. This will 'qualify' you for the full warranty of 1 year or 10k mileage (forgot the range liao).

The stamp can get from any bike shop (authorised by BS). Best to go back to the shop you bought the bike.... unless you bought direct from BS then got little choice (but still possible).

PM me if you wanna know how I did it...

servicing at BS? chop warranty card? all these i never do leh :p

only time my scoob went into their workshop (after few months) is for warranty repair on charging problem (for magnetic coil replaced under warranty).

bought scooby from Looi's so went back to them for standard servicing, then hop ship to other shops after Looi's failed to detect my charging problem. change my stuffs (tried different juices) at many places other than BS during the first year.

i still remember Clifford (K&T) asking me "chun bo, use 10w40 engine oil for final transmission"

then one stupid decision in early 2009 to try using normal w90 gear oil :slapforehead:

cost me abt $550 to repair... many thanks to Clifford and Ah Chuen who spent lots of time working out the repair (mine was the 1st SW they worked on to replace the drive gears/bearings).

seems like my scoob is first SW "job" for some workshops:

@ K&T = first SW they repair final drive gears and bearings (now they have the special tool required)

@ Motoworld = first SW they change tyres, but i got super good deal (only $145 all in for a set of diablo scooter)

@ Equipment Extreme = first SW they mount PA2, took >1.5hrs

@ Eugene Saddlery (according to Eugene) = first SW for seat wrap with design & customise top box back rest

My S10 no more warranty liao. Warranty is 10,000km mileage, or 1 year.

Requirement: First 2 services by Hong Leong.

Paid around the same price for EO as quoted to you by Boon Siew, but for me, I dont mind, cos using Yamalube, which according to many reviews, is a very good EO. :)

Price slightly more ex, but when I asked and enquire, i realised they change the rubber o-ring gasket everytime they change EO..

Wow....1yr or 12k km so fast use finish or never go back? lolx

Change o ring gasket is good practice as it ensure there will be no leak.

Lik tt warranty still count? eh lik this when I go change 10w40 mineral oil for eo.. my transmission also use the same mineral oil? Wad must I take note when doing first eo change? Cos I scare later e mech dunno wad oil to use;( n e chart I dunno how to read;( so sori...

nope, never serviced at BS before.

i spoke to previous BS workshop manager few years back and he said as long as there's no modification to the bike and servicing done according to honda's recommendation, warranty should not be affected.

don't remember reading anywhere that honda's warranty is on condition that servicing must be done at BS.

btw, my bike went in with PA2 installed... mech told me its not recommended, but warranty still intact :p

first eo change (500km??) is a very simple one, just remember:

* use mineral/dinosaur engine oil and NOT synthetic oil

* oil filter change is optional but if FOC, why not

* final drive oil change is optional

* make sure mech don't tighten the aluminium drain plug too tight, else next round got problem opening; it gets "out of shape" easily from excessive force too, especially if worn tools are used.

... that's about it

if really want to play safe when changing final drive oil, print this and bring it along:

@scoobydoo wahaha Ty Ty;) now I can make up my mind.. since its optional to change transmission oil.. for e first 500km.. haha dun think they will giv oil filter for free lol!! But I still change.. wanna take care of my first, first hand bike.. lol.. sori huh scoobydoo maybe I noob so dun understand wad you're saying.. transmission oil can use mineral oil Itz? Lol sori sori;)

Posted

maybe to end all the confusion, we shall just call it final drive oil, as what the service manual states.

from factory, the final drive oil inside bike is mineral oil, not synthetic.

i used the same SAE grade 10w40 mineral motor oil for both engine bay and final drive over the 1000 km run-in, then change both to synthetics when run-in completed.
