Just a question here, hopefully I can get some opinions ... Don't wanna e-mail the termites or LTA because of some personal reason ...

If a mechanic rides my bike to an inspection centre for the annual road-worthiness check (renewal of road tax / insurance), does he need to hang a "Blue Plate" a.k.a. Special Insurance over my license plate?

Or would it be wiser to add the mechanic as a sub-rider on my insurance, then strike it off when the inspection is over?

I won't want to get caught in a situation whereby the mechanic is screened and summoned for riding with my license plate, and to cover my own arse I have to report that I was unaware of him riding my bike. Neither will I want to risk my license being kantong if I were to admit that I permitted him to do so ...

reputable mechanics usually have what we call a "trade license" which enables them to legally ride all vehicles. Of course, they must possess a CL2 license.

Thanks ... I guess I have to press the guy for an invoice (handing over) though, to ensure that no sh*t happens just in case his "trade license" is not valid for some reason ...

Does your mechanic have in place a motor trader insurance policy to cover customers' vehicles?

Just curious about this trade insurance for motorbikes.

I know for cars, you would need to hang a trade plate eg, a mechanic driving a Police Car, he would need to display a Trade Plate.

I have never seen any motorbikes with a trade plate, or motorbikes has a different set of rules ?

remembered reading about this in the "Riding w/o ownership?" thread :) (quote snipped)

Mechanic has different type of insurance. It is called Motor Trade Insurance.

There are 2 different types of Motor Trade Insurance. One is by NAMED and the other is UNNAMED.

For NAMED type, only mechanic names that are in the policy so he/she can ride the bike. Sometime you will see that there are many mechanic in that workshop but only one or two will test ride your bike.

For UNMANED type, if you happened to see vehicle on the road with a blue number plate hanging on the vehicle, those are the UNNAMED type. They can hang this plate on any vehicle (same categories) with or without insurance on them.

if i were u i do myself. stop all the worrying. n its cheaper too. if u may hav many mods, y not go to mech to re-mod ur bike, den send to inspection. neway mechs can ride ur bike legally la dun worry. if he dun hav the trade insurance u report he conned u. story finish. n finally if he do hav it, but he buang ur bike, u just guess the time needed to get back ur claim from the insurance agent. i had a claim against me last year, it was $3k plus. but till now no payment made cos insurer got own lawyer oso wan to fight mah against claiming party.... dis involve money, so people are willing to go the distance. even u pay installment $200 per mth oso can finish aredi. wat is $3k to a big company like NTUC or AXA? so moral is, u wan things done rite, do it urself. sori abit off topic

There are various reasons why people might want to entrust their motorcycles to others.

TS might be busy, out of town, engaged/confined elsewhere.

All in all, TS can just pay a bit of extra, to have a peace of mind, have the bike transported from the mechanic to the Inspection and back to the mechanic shop, or to his own parking lot. Using a tow lorry.

And.....reputable mechanics wont try to save money to ride your motorcycle to anywhere for you. Besides....they so free to ride your bike? What about the other bikes that needs servicing or needs inspection the same as yours?

seriously, if TS is out of town, wont it be cheaper to pay $5 to lta to lay up the bike for a while? save all the towing thingy. when he comes home den unlay the bike? if his subrider wans to ride it during his overseas, ask subrider to do inspection himself. he is legal rider mah... so dun worry. den jus renew roadtax from axs.

funny to see mechs ride the bikes all the way to inspection centre.. hahah

usually they tow a few bikes on lorry laa.. they got no time to go 1 by 1.

simple for TS to understand this. :)

Do they really need to bring the bikes for inspection ? ;)

And to Unlay the bike, the TS still need towing service for the bike to be towed to the mechanic to unmod the bike or change engine oil and such to make sure the bike runs smoothly, tow it to inspection centre, pay up the road tax and probably buy a new insurance.

Errrmm.....how cheap is that?

For the subrider to ride it to the inspection centre while the owner is overseas. Does the owner actually has a subrider? The subrider has the $$$ to unmod the bike, pay the mechanic, pay the inspection fee or have the time to do the above? What are the chances that the owner do not have a subrider, does not trust a subrider or the subrider cannot do the above?

You really never experienced all those eh........

OK OK STOP THE WAR ... :sian:

I'd rather let the mech do up everything (inspection), road tax / insurance renewal, paperwork etc. cos I am in NS - have no time to run ard getting such stuff done. There's also another reason why I will not go for the inspection myself.

Guess I just have to check that the mech (who doesn't own a tow lorry BTW) has a Motor Trade Insurance and trust him to get the job done.

Ooh.. You must have a pampered childhood ya..

Then do u have the experience of getting into legal crap while in NS?

neway mechs can ride ur bike legally la dun worry. if he dun hav the trade insurance u report he conned u. story finish.

Oh report that the mech conned me. Then will the mech ever set my bike properly? One relation broken, one bridge blown up. A problem solved (liability) but more problems created (loss of trust, mech not getting the job done well and causing breakdowns etc.).

Scientists and engineers dun solve problems and create more ya ...

The mech doesn't have to own a tow lorry. Usually the workshop will have tie-ups with tow company.

I give you biz, you give me good rates. Everybody happy. :)

As above.

Not all mechs very free to bring your bike to inspection. They also try to avoid the chances of accidents with your bike where they ruin their own reputation.

And towing service is very cheap, unless the mech or the shop has been not paying the tow company and driver. Which should also then warn you the chance of the bike shop folding and running away.

You woudnt want your bike stuck in some bikeshop where you cannot retrieve your bike because the mech/owner ran away.
