guys.. my ta200 running on Chex 9000 now.. its been about 2000km now over the past 2 mths, my EO seems to dry up real quick.. i topped up a total about 1L of Chex 9000 already... i've tried running a little rich to run a little cooler (turn the screw clockwise right? just to confirm) but still no difference.. top up a little about every week... any idea whr my EO goes? i doubt its d piston area, cux thr is no white smoke..

try to change your EO at 1500km... ta200 do eat a little 4T.. it's normal....

this is a sign that u may need a top overhaul..ie valve train servicing..a dirty oily air filter confirms this..

a really bad situation is bad rings/piston..if u are loosing power...thats a sure sign with the high oil consumption..

I think silverwing has dry clutch - there was a similar post on the oil discussion thread somewhere else, and a SW rider stated he has a dry clutch. So it should be fine.

hi guys, read thru some pages of this thread and noticed i used the wrong engine oil. the one im using is for car (those normal synetic oil from petrol kiosk) instead of 4T engine oil for motorbike. and my ta200 does drink alot of oil too.. so i always need to top up once every fews full tank.

regarding for the change of engine oil, does phantom have a oil filter to change also when doing servicing? im still not very sure whats in my bike. hopefully any lao jiao would enlighten me

Oil consumption depends on engine state. It's possible to run with zero oil consumption but it does depend on engine state, operating history, etc. Complicated stuff, just enjoy the ride for as long as you keep the bike.

TA200s like most older 2B bikes don't have oil filters. Thus it is important to run a shorter OCI (oil change interval). Something around a thousand miles (1600km) should be perfect to ensure engine longevity.

With regards to engine oil change, I was just wondering if there's really a need drain of all the old EO, before topping in new ones, or can I just top up new EO periodically?

Theoretically it's like petrol? I mean I'm not sure about this, but if I don't drain all my petrol before pumping in new one, can I just top up EO like I do with petrol. Of course EO has sediments, so perhaps 3 every yearly quarter then flush the whole engine?

What do you guys think?

"Wolves and sheep will live together in peace, and leopards will lie down with young goats, calves and lion cubs will feed together, and little children will take care of them. Cows and bears will eat together, and their calves and cubs will lie down in peace." Isaiah 11:6-8

You need to drain the engine oil completely as:

1. Combustion by products, moisture from condensation in the morning, all accumulate in the EO. Nowadays we are all using detergent type EOs which break down the crap in the engine and suspend it in the EO (hence the dark colour), instead of letting them build up on the engine parts.

This is the reason why if you have a machine using say, EO from the 70s (where it was still "SAE 30" not "10W40"), the engine oil when changed will be clear but that does NOT mean SAE 30 runs cleaner than 10W40. The sh1t remains in the engine due to lack of detergents! So you need to drain the damn toilet periodically.

1a. We don't have engine oil filters to prolong oil life so use the tried and tested rule for 'vintage' engines - one thousand mile OCIs.

2. If you don't get rid of the crap floating in the old engine oil, and rely on topping up alone, eventually the engine will wear itself to require costly maintenence. It will take a long time but that's what will happen.... especially considering I can easily solve oil consumption issues and never need to top up :p I don't want to think of what will happen if I ran a 2 year OCI :p

thanks bro, regarding for the using of wrong EO does that really matter or should i just continue to use it?

If it's not causing you any clutch slippage you may continue using the car oil (it doesn't have any friction reducers) - but for the long term it may be advisable to use motorcycle-formulated oils because the additive packages for bikes cater better to high revving, small-sump engines. Specifically, zinc, phosphorous levels are typically higher for m/c oils. (Turbodiesel pickup oils strangely have similar requirements due to the high temperature of turbos running at 150,000rpm; they use oil for cooling)

Whereas a car formulation can be safely designed for reduced emissions and greater fuel economy, a car having a larger oil sump, extensive filtration systems and at least for passenger cars, much lower revs. There are car oils like you discovered that may be attractive for their low cost but since we're still at class 2B, oil changes don't cost much anyway.

I don't advocate buying a crap oil to save money then add aftermarket additives into it - we are not oil engineers and some of these so called "performance enhancing" additives can and have ruined small-bike engines. So just let the smart people at Motul or your favourite motorcycle oil company do the job picking the right additives for you.

if you have car eo....best is to get rid of it as fast as u can..

the car eo will destroy your clutch plate...

this is what i will do...get the cheapest 4t..happens to be unc lube at$3/L at ah boy..

drain thye car eo...put in cheapo 4T..run for a day..change over to your fav 4t..oil..

in this way the car eo is flushed away....or you may run muti changes of cheap eo if you are still uncomfortable with one flush..

hey..lube oil is a biggie subject..pleas refer to the term tribology...

lube oils are always formulated for a particular usage...

turbo charger...now they run at high rpm..more than 100,000 rpm is the norm...

thel ube oil requirements here is quite different from bike bike/engines..

bike/car rpm low and with high load..

turbo charger..high rpm at low loads...this oil is formulated to be of very low viscosity so that that can flow easily between the tight clearances of the turbo charge.at high rpm....if they use lube oil at all..

nowa adays...most turbo chargers do not use oil as an lubricant..surprise ahhhhhhhh..

they utilize what is known as an air bearing...yeah they float on air during their operations..

so guys you dont have to experiment...the eo company has done that for you..

just choose a well accepted brand and you wont go wrong...dont be a smart aleck and do dumb things..

the above is only my personal opinion...it is up to you to believe or not...any way u are fooling with your bike not mine..

Yay good work :D

For those really interested in DIY tuning - suggest get an IR thermometer from Mustafa. I'll get one and we can chart what is the 'normal' operating temperature of a TA200 so we don't have to use the "is my feet burning?" temperature gauge!

hahaha.. alrite.. do come back at let us know hw much is it.. :) dun mind getting one too and play ard wif my bike a little more... i tink there is still more potential to squeeze out of this little old bike!

Not recommended - it's better to simply change the oil frequently. An OCI (oil change interval) of 1500-2000km works fine to maintain good engine condition.
