The first thing one should do is change the exhaust system from standard (which has certain restrictions built into the headers) to an after market-straight through system/muffler which should immediately improve the performance of the bike. At this point you either decide to leave the standard airbox in play, or modifiy it to accept the HRC(copy) airduct system that uses a standard/modified airbox with no air filter. This option requires the coils to be mounted outside the frame.

Next you should use a modified (purpose built) radiator as the CBR usually runs very hot, overheating on most occasions.

These modifications should see your bike producing 63+ horsepower & further internal (ie porting/flowing the head-resaeting the valves/etc) would see the power increase further to approx 65/66hp.

Suspension should also be looked at, with us increasing the front springs (depending on the riders weight) and replacing the rear shock to one out of a CBR600 (mid 90’s –that has a remote reservoir & much more adjustment).

This should give you a well sorted race bike.

seems like thers quite some mods we can do:

1. change radiator to CBR900 radiators

2. rear shock to cbr900

3. HRC velocity stacks

4.HRC CDI

5.close ratio gearbox ??

6.CV carbs ??

7. full kitted airbox??

8.inverted fork from RVF

9. 4-2-1 Hi-Rise DIC race exhaust system headers

10. racetech front suspension

CBR400's stock carb is CV alr. Constant Velocity.

Sold my CDI together with bike. Cos i dun have stock CDI. Further more the wiring not the same as stock.

hehehe... from Australia 400cc racing teams..I ask for their supplier contact

RB Aren't that great in my experience and massively overcharge for parts and service for 400s. There are other better race tuners and suspension experts that support the 400cc race scene in Australia but most of them do not have an easy to contact online presence like RB.

I used to race in the 400s in Australia, its a really good fun, competitive and cheap racing scene.

Realistically if you guys want to improve your 400s, first step SUSPENSION. Without major engine work the bolt on modifications to a CBR400 will not deliver a substantial improvement in power output whereas suspension improvements will immediately drop your laptimes as the stock suspension is old and crap.

What I would do (on a smallish budget):

1) Replace front fork springs with heavier springs, disassemble, clean and service forks and put in heavier fork oil to increase compression damping, cut some difference length spacers from some metal tube and try them out to get different levels of preload, these can easily be changed between track sessions by just screwing the fork cap off and pulling the old spacer out and dropping a new one in and replace the fork cap. Takes 5 minutes.

2) Rear shock. Replace with shock from a CBR600F3 model. Shocks from the later model CBR600s are too long. Those from the earlier models are just as bad as the original on the CBR400. If you have the budget get the CBR600 shock resprung with a spring to suit your weight and serviced and revalved to suit the lighter CBR400 bike.

3) Braided brake lines and Sintered metal pads. Pull your front calipers apart and clean them, put new EBC HH (or equivalent from another brand) pads, braided steel brake lines and bleed with fresh fluid.

These 3 things will drop seconds off your laptimes and make your bike better and safer for both the road and the street. The suspension will be more compliant, predictable and stable greatly improving handling and the brakes will be MUCH MUCH MUCH stronger with harder initial bite and more braking power. This will make you stop faster so you can brake later on the track and avoid those taxi's on the road!!

Posted

Next step:

1) full race system, headers and open pipe. The stock headers and the stock muffler both have internal restrictions to exhaust flow AND are heavy. A good aftermarket race system will drop several kilo's of weight and provide much better exhaust flow.

2) Get more air in, get a fresh air filter to make sure you are getting maximum air into the bike, you could also consider an additional scoop/intake to get more air into the box but the advantage will be minimal.

3) DYNO TIME AND REJET. I can't emphasise this enough. The bike will run like rubbish if you just put a full race system on it. You will lose power everywhere unless you rejet and run it up on a dyno to see what it is doing and rejet it properly. Mechanics stating they can tune it perfectly without a dyno run to save you money are a sign you should go to a different mechanic.

Full system, new air filter and rejet should see you getting about 60-62hp at the rear wheel on the dyno.

Remember each dyno will read differently and even the same dyno can read differently as temperature changes during the day. Use the dyno to show you performance gains, not to try and compare outright hp figures with other riders. Do a dyno run before you do any mods to see where you are, then compare with your final run after mods and tuning to see the GAIN that you have made.

Regarding the HRC CDI - it DOES give a small improvement, especially when combined with a race tuned engine HOWEVER it is not worth it for the price that these things currently go for. If you can find one cheap though by all means snap it up, just don't expect a noticable difference when riding around town.

Oh also drop 1 tooth off the front sprocket and add 1-2 on the back to gear the bike down, this will give you more bottom end with the expense of a little top end. At a track like PG you will never see your top end anyway so this will give you a nice boost on its own over a bike with stop gearing. At a track with long straights like Sepang you would probably want to be closer to standard gearing so that you don't top out down the long straights but you would need to test different gearing and see what you can get away with.

Lastly - tyres. Sticky tyres will good suspension will give you incredible amounts of grip and corner speed on these little bikes. If you are after track speed and grip get yourself something like some Pirelli Supercorsa's as there is a big difference between the level of grip these offer and the level of grip offered by something like GPR70's BT090's etc that are commonly fitted to 400s here.

we are all searching for a gd shop too,not really sure of where you should go to BUT i can tell you where you SHOULD NOT go to...ha..but seriously you can try unique motorsports, few of the bladers say they're gd..personally i'm gonna pay a visit to bikelab and 1 racing performance next..

Go to Wan at 1 racing at Eunos. They do all the servicing and mods on my CBR400 for me. Very good, honest shop, very friendly and know CBR400s inside out.

msg HRCSGP who posts on here if you want any parts or race setup for CBR400 he knows all about them

Yes obviously a used one, just have to be patient and keep looking. The shock cost like US$5 the rest was shipping fees to Singapore. Used shocks from older model 600s really have little value in the US market.

And yes valve clearance adjustment is an absolute must. Unless I have a receipt from the previous owner showing me when it was done last I will ALWAYS do this when I buy a new bike. Particularly an older bike like a CBR400 as they tend to be a big neglected for the big servicing items here.

If you do not have your valve clearances checked and adjusted you will probably get away with it for a while around town but you are likely to drop a valve and kill your engine when you start doing track days. It doesn't cost that much to have it done and it only needs to be done every 24k klms or so according to the service manual (more often if mostly track riding).

Take it to 1 Racing at Eunos if you want it done properly for a reasonable price.

I am always around just not on the forums so actively. Still have my CBR400 hurricane.
