Have had good results from Shell petrol in 2 strokes. The cruising RPM seems slightly lower for a given cruising speed. Ie, Esso @ 100kph = 6000 RPM, Shell 95 @ 100kph = 5850.

Somehow Shell advertising for "fuel economy formula" does have some real world benefit.

As for Caltex some say it's loaded chock full of detergents but I don't like it. Makes the engine rev fast but the "kick" from torque is just not there. Fuel is used up faster, somehow (perhaps from the revving to get the desired power)

I would prefer to use Caltex Platinum 98. Its way wayyyy smoother in terms of pickup and at cruising speed.

Although i have to agree with some that Shell 98 provides optimum power, and Esso 8000 beats the rest in terms of mileage.

For those looking for a smooth ride, Caltex would be my recommendation.

Ultimately, it's up to the rider's preference. :)

I find that the fuelsave formula crap is much worse than the previous one... Bring down my power. Mileage same or abit lesser...

For me, Phantom Custom TA200,

When nearing empty I will ideally look out for SPC (Discount using DBS card + Better mileage)

or either Shell/Esso, since I kind of like Caltex but the nearest is at Upper thomson? so i'd just go with either, but primarily SPC , secondary is Shell (Just opposite my house).

If outside, still look for 1) SPC, 2) Esso, then 3)Shell... if super low on fuel, anywhere =)

Strange though my last refuel of Shell gave me 27km/l which is shockingly bad considering SPC gives me 33 min..... Have refueled one more time to verify findings =(

I might take a look at your carb settings some day. It's a bit on the rich side. The Potong Pasir Knights used to get 30km/l, now 40km/l on the highway at 100kph. Hosted a few tuning sessions for them over the past few months.

I am not sure if their dual-intake 'performance' airboxes have a difference but it allows them to cruise fast with much less throttle input.

Better yet, I'll teach you to self-tune (theory of carburetion). After a few months you would notice different fuels have slightly different optimal mixtures.

I do agree on the SPC giving better than usual economy - I looked up my old FC charts and SPC gave maximum range.

YEAP!!!!

DBS Card = 5%

SPC Card = 5%

Everday card = Even more, but 8% i not too sure, or is it 3%.. Somewhere there, way better than Esso/Shell/Caltax points system.

Esso you need what? 220 points or something for $10 petrol voucher? Which takes 3-5 months to get the points, for $10. Shell give rice cooker and iron, not to mention my bike no main stand, abit lehchey, nuff said. SPC at least can easily clock 10%, meaning if you pump $10, $1 discount, pump 10 times and you would have earned the esso's voucher. =)

And thankfully SPC behind my house =) Their stuff are way cheaper than Esso (Ntuc) and Shell (7-11)

Cool thanks a lot =) 40km/l sounds too good to be true =P

This group is the first Phantom rider group that took DIY performance tuning seriously. At first for fuel economy, then self-designing some reduced-restriction intake and exhaust parts to gain greater enjoyment out of our old Thai choppers. we like being able to cruise at max speed at just 20% throttle :D

Heya.. I have a 4-cyl carburetted litre bike. Would you be able to help me tune my carbs too? I've always wanted to do it, but never learnt how :p

Fuel wise, I've been using Mobil/Esso almost exclusively for the past 8.5 years of riding. Signed up for the speedpass tag when I got my Super4, and the convenience of never having to get off the bike (or even carry your wallet) is just unbeatable IMO. So unfortunately I can't compare various brands, but given the glowing reviews of Caltex smoothness, I might give it a shot :D

Used to use RON98 with my Super4, switched to 95 when I upgraded to a litre bike cos I figured I don't need the extra power. Filled up 92 recently by mistake cos the 92 pump was in the centre, where the 95 usually is o_O Found the bike runs slightly smoother with no discernible loss of power or mileage. So I'm sticking with Esso 92 for the time being. And of course it's cheaper.

I can teach you the theory of carburetion and how to get part of an aircraft pilot's license, playing around with the mixture controls to suit different flight AHEM riding conditions et al :D

They apply to basically, any motor vehicle and I'll be happy to share the stuff I picked up and experimented with.

HOWEVER.

I have looked at a SuperFour's quad carburettor setup and my main question is.... How do I DIY that without taking everything apart lol :D

I don't know if it's the rider is a 'light hander' or a 'heavy whacker' .. Most of the times i pump my petrol @ JB using Shell 97.. Then i will usually clocked about 100+ km before refuelling it to the fullest again in SG, i will pump Shell 95 and that will last me for a whole week or most 8 days i've experimented on. Usually my speed will me kept at top 90km/hr - 100km/hr.. If vtec open also not for so long... Less then a min or so.. Usually clocked about 380km after reserve.. Any advise?

You appear to have done your homework and 380km on the S4 is decent! Not going above 100kph means aerodynamic drag is kept at reasonable limits (streetfighter design - no aero) and gentle acceleration by itself is always a good idea for saving petrol.

If you want to get even more mileage then mechanical modifications need to be done, this includes, aero, sprocket size selection for higher cruise speed/lower rpms, wear spandex for lower air resistance (lmao it works), running overinflated tyres for reduced drag, etc but all these "hypermiling" techniques more or less make riding much less fun.

The best advice is stick to what you're doing - your riding techniques are more or less by the book 'fuel economy formulae' and all but the most basic of vehicle modifications are generally not very practical cost wise.

If you have a S4, make use of it :D

Ps. @nabil15 bought a Spec 2 a few months ago and did various fuel economy tests on it with a low resistance exhaust system. He got about the same tank range as your techniques so you two are on the same page on CB400 max range.

Shell 95 really does the job, no need for 98 or even V-Power for that matter.

And as long as usual cruising speeds are 85-95km/h max, you'd be able to get 380-400km on one full tank :)

Also playing around with the timings of your kicking up of gears when and where, and how you brake or accelerate all play some part, in saving few extra kilometres or you just burn it away :)

Then again, don't restrict yourself to, being too fuel economical. You would just tend to be thinking of saving every additional mileage and the fun of riding would be faded away.

You could always learn from Pandora's Kitten :3, on how you could best alter your bike to suit your riding technique with best use of fuel efficiency ! :D

And that's how he gets such great joy riding and enjoying such good FC all the time!!
