I've steered clear of Symantec and their Norton-family of antivirus software because they were pesky to have installed and to operate.

But now I noticed that they're cleaning up with regards to their footprint (no more slowing down the PC when it's installed), as well as User Interface, has anyone used it.

Question to the knowledgeable guys here: Is it as persistent as before? I know the previous versions would just nag and nag at you from whether you wanna do this or that, or better, every hour with a bloody popup in the center of the screen when your antivirus subscription has expired.

From what I've been told by the people in Norton, they have toned down on the 'naggy' notifications, significantly increased their scanning speed, decrease the resources used and made it a heck lot simpler to install/uninstall with their new Norton 2010 product line. How true is that, remains to be seen.

Haha... those were the "good old days" of Norton. Hated them as well for slowing down everything you are trying to do with your PC to a crawl.

But from the Performance Test @ av-comparatives, it does seems that they have bucked up somewhat. My workplace PC is installed with Symantec Endpoint Protection, after the first few days of slowness caused by fingerprinting and all, things seems to be back to normal. So I guess there is some credit to their claim.

*disclaimer: I'm not advocating for nor against any anti-virus brands.

The following AVs i have used since 2008.

AVIRA Free - Good and Simple, one of the most resource friendly AV u can get. (ads during autoupdate)

AVAST Free - Good, Slighty more features thn avira (i dont like). Cartoon UI (IMO).

AVG Free - Getting bugged by more features... Have not used it since AVG 8, prefered 7.5

Norton - Slowed dwn my PC noticibly. Uninstalled since the 1yr evalutaion expired. (Not impressive imho)

my pc is an old hagged lady, so i always welcomed simplicity and resource friendly softwares.

One should not rely solely on Anti Virus to protect their data.

There will be instances where files damaged are unrecoverable.

Backups are good,

because i can take an instant stab (C:/fdisk) at the issue if things are out of hand.

If im a home user, i prolly get a free AV and invest in a one time fee of buying an ext harddisk that comes with auto backup features. In this way, i get a better protection with good value.

Save the hassle of renewing licences everyear with some Crab for $70-$100/ year.

funny only 3 guys mentioned nod32. but i'd go for the total security version, eset smart security. really nice and quiet. you won't even know it's running until it quietly tells you 'hey! i've updated myself. but really you dont have to bother about me. i'm doing my job. now run along and just pretend im not here.'

AVG is good enuff, along with MalwareBytes for spyware and malware protection.

On one of my computers in my home, running genuine Windows Vista Home Premium, one of the Windows update patches caused my internet browsing to behave funny.

Everytime I downloaded something from the internet, after it reaches 100% completion, the status window would mysteriously close, and the file would just disappear. As if no download took place.

Narrowed it down to AVG antivirus, uninstalled that bugger, and installed something else. Problem went away.

Hope Grisoft fixes their AVG antivirus in the next update, else it's over to another AV for me.

Kaspersky over NOD32 anytime.

- Undertail exhaust. It was not the Ducati 916 (as may people think) that was the first production bike with such a design, but the NR750.

- Single-side swingarm. Actually, this was not a new concept on the NR750. But it was not a new concept on the Ducati 916 (again, as many people think) either! The RC30 race bike and 1988 Honda Hawk GT Had it!
