Hi guys..

I'm from Malaysia.

I am trying to learn more about TZM and there's not a lot of informative forums around except for this. I just recently bought myself a TZM and am planning to have a Project TZM to fully restore my bike.

My bike is about 10 years old and the initial problem I had was that it gets sluggish between 4000 to 5000rpm.. Changed a whole lot of things from the YPVS to the CDI but doesn't resolve the matter.

To make matters worse, fuel was leaking from my carb and after getting the needle fixed, the sluggish problem became less. It still comes though but not as much cos I have tuned the air intake for the bike a little higher. However it takes longer for my bike to start.

Is there a way to resolve that matter once and for all? I just want to identify where is the cause so that in future I can refer back. I am planning to change my carb and hope that it will go away but that's a big 'IF'.

Anyway I drive my bike for work almost everyday at average speed of 120 to 140km/h. I wish you guys can help teach me a little more on how I can make it go higher.

I asked a dude before who drives a TZM. He had his engine bearings changed and he can reach about 180km/h. How can that be achieved?

At the moment I am lookin at full restoration of the engine and I wish to know what kind of mods I can make to have the bike running smoother..

I am really crazy about this bike so I hope you guys can help

Attached is a picture of my bike

Hi again..

I have so many questions to ask..

I think I will go in sequence:

1. Bearings: Which part of the bikes should I have my bearings changed? I don't mind paying for it.. So far I know there are bearing in the engine, gears and rims. Anywhere else?

2. Spark plugs: What brand is good? I read from the old articles that denso and NGK is good.. How good is good? What's the dif from normal ones? (I haven't had the chance to read through all the articles, so sorry if I'm repeating questions asked before)

3. Piston: Racing pistons. Necessary?

4. YPVS: How often do I need to service that at the speed and rate I'm going (ave 120/140km/h per day)

5. Engine Oil: What's a good brand? How often do I change that?

6. 2T Oil: What's a good brand? I'm using Shell at the moment. Not sure if that's good.

7. Coolant: Again any brand recommendations? How often do I flush it? Previous articles state 24K mileage

8. Suspension (front): Can it be changed to adjustables? What brand? I have mine lowered a little so do I make it harder or softer? I am looking for a decent cornering at max speed

9. Suspension (rear): Adjustables? Can that be done? Again it's for cornering stability

10. Clutch: Racing clutch or ori?

11. Brakes: Good brand? Good pads? Are there any good discs I can change to?

12. CDI: Here we can get as low as RM50 but I doubt that's a good one. Since I changed mine I feel that max is 160km/h (Tested on the highway). I read that the best is from Thailand. How much dif?

13. Tyres: I want something good for cornering on dry tarmac. Won't be speeding during rain. Had my fair shares of crashes.

14. Carburator: Anyone know how to tune this DIY? If so which part? If there's pictures it would be great.

15. Chain: I hear that some people use smaller chains for racing. What are the odds of them breaking?

16. Weight: What can I get rid off to minimize the weight of the bike?

That's about it for now I guess.

I am planning to setup a site for TZM. With pictures and all. Easier to references. But so far I've been quite busy with work to be able to tinker around DIY. I'm not afraid to experiment but I want to know what is what.

Hope you guys can help.

my 2cents..

1)bearings: u dont need to change bearings unless its wearing off or anything like that. conrod bearings last for years and u will find freeplay on your conrod cos thats the way it is.. not that it needs replacement.

2)plugs: if your bike isnt fully crazily furiously mod. get the normal ones. B8ES do just fine. NGK. DENSO. brand names. just like NISSIN. BREMBO. MAGURA (hahaha). 8 is the bike's factory specification. U follow this right. ur bike doesnt go sluggish or overpowered.

3)piston: necessary for what? normal yamaha pistons do best. Original YAMAHA is all u need. Just do a full service when its up..

4)YPVS: 140 im sure valves open no need to worry bout carbon clogging up and getting jam. service is when u feel necessary. feel the force. may the force be with u.

5)engine oil: engine old plays a good part to performance. if u think u got money to throw u can take a look at motul or fuch silkolene. either that or yamaha autolube semisynthetic do just fine with a lil of engine oil treatment. someone told me fullysyn change ever 16 k click. semi 8k click. thats his spec. i'd prefer somewhere there too.

6)2t: for an old bike like ours, people say semi do just fine. i'd rather not take the chances and go for a fully. esso 2t gold or pennzoil 2t marine tcw3. tcw3 = use in boat motor engine. high revving. safe side. but den again. YCLS exist.

7)coolant: no comment. waterwetter. castrol coolant. all the same.

8)suspension: i think its even possible to change to inverted forks. possible with money. if u lower ur fork might as well make it harder a lil cos braking makes ur bike go downwards. at corners u might even scrap your fairings.

9)rear shocks: adjustables? why not. aftermarket. not ori. alot of shops at jb do authoring of shocks. aftermarket shocks like OEM can adjust springing hardness only .. not the hight.

10)clutch. ample people use racing clutch. i use ori. racing = faster wear and tear. ori = ori. get the pic?

11)brakes: brake calipers? fix a brembo. change the hose. masterpump. tzm calipers do just great what. i rather use a normal pad and change when i have to. how much only will i save if i use a good padding.

12) what cdi u using. for all i now u get an ori tzm cdi for a few hundred sing dollars. thailand are racing cdi. someone commented he tried that and the power transfered to the sparkplug caused a hole in the piston.

13)tyres: im not sure on the malaysian market but i know theres alot of dunlop tires around. hard and durable. my preference would be battlax. bt039ss. guess battlax are the best tires around for 150 cat sportsbikes.

14)carb: no cant do. u do this wrongly ur bike bobok things get spoiled. sometimes YPVS gets jammed because of carb setting. to get top speed or pickup its all in the carb tuning. perfect hands get perfect tunings.

15)chain: smaller chain for racing. u change them when it gets cranky. and i bet it needs change too frequently. rather get an o ring and last quite long. a yr or 2 probably although its heavy.

16)weight: do what malaysians do best. drill holes on frames. avoid crashing. either than that, no sidemirrors, no chainguard etc dont do the trick.

This is my 2cents. Wat i think. So comment if u like. Some bros here think i talk sh*t. Like my 350click full tank without reserve on stock jettings and average cruising speed of 90 - 110kmph. haha. cheers

Nocturnized : Hey ya, thanks.. I like it simple.. Did the spraying DIY just to test out to see if white is nice.. End result is I love it.. Even cops like it.. LOls.. Originally it was yellow and silver.. I like that too but I was itching to know how white will be..

The ferring on the left side is a little cracked and the fuel tank dented a little due to crashing by the last guy.. Now I'm just saving up to change the ferring and also the fuel tank.. Then I will get it sprayed white..

Anyway I'm not so worried about looks.. I want to learn more about the mods.. So I'm researching everywhere to know how to mod it..

QuoVadis: Thanks for the pointers bro, I know some parts best remain ori.. But I'm just curious if there are mod parts.. I don't mind tinkering with the settings.. at the end of the day I don't want to rely 100% on my mech.. I'm in KL btw so travelling from one point to the other is far.. I just want to be able to detect what's wrong if so happens it breaks down in the middle of nowhere..

If you don't have enough knowledge, mechanics will just rip you off telling you to change what you don't need to change..

I'll take note to what you said.. Thanks again..

Btw, does that sluggish feel at 4000 to 5000rpm happen to any of you before?
