I think the red tiles to mark out school zones are not suitable for wet weather.

Most roads which are next to schools now have a section of it paved with the red tiles instead of regular tarmac. They become very slippery when wet, and I was nearly involved in an accident recently.

I was riding past a neighbourhood primary school and it was just after a heavy downpour. I was riding pretty slowly, about 40+km/h just going over the red tiles when I noticed some pri sch kids playing by the curbside, I tapped my brakes to slow down in case they decide to dash out, and my tyres skidded over the red tiles. Thankfully I was already travelling very slowly so I did not lose control.

If the children really did dash onto the road, I'd have skidded into them.

I know the red tiles are to mark out 'hazard zones' but they become a hazard to motorcyclists instead. What is the point of warning me that there might be kids crossing the road when it kills me to even try to slow down?

I think tiles with more grip should be used. Am I the only one with this problem?

FYI: I am using Dunlop GPR-70s, and have no problems on wet tarmac and few problems on white lines/yellow box markings.

Believe nothing you hear; and only half of what you see.

Do or do not; there is no 'try'.

This red tiles are not tiles at all. LTA just cut grooves onto the tar road surface to looks like brickwork and painted it red in color.

When wet the paint can be slippery that all. Just like braking on the white arrow marking near the junction of road. Just got to be careful.

I have ever saw a Subaru WRX losing control over the red tiles and doing 360degree 2 rounds at Thomson Road (Near Mediacorp).

Luckily for him, there was no cars/motorcyclist around him. It was a 3 lanes road, and he was in the middle road.

It was a slight right bend on the tiles, I think he was going a little too fast than usual thus losing it.

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car

and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.

Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall,

torque is how far you take the wall with you.

he must have cut back on the throttle in the midst of the bend, hence the loss of traction and the spin..

Hi there im the camel Sp at braddell haha.

I am facing this problem as well. There was once i slightly fish-ed when travelling at about 30-40 km/h WITHOUT applying any brakes.

Woah... You actually dug up my old thread!

hahaha...

It's been so long ago...

Yeah, our gahment is quite good at doing such things without foresight, and have absolutely no regard for bikers.

I guess the most important issue is to get used to being 3rd class citizens when you're on your bike. We are beneath even domestic workers, construction workers, janitors, and illegal immigrants.

did not encounter any problems with the red sections before. still remeber this was implemented because a kid was killed by a speeding car outside his sch..attended a road safety forum before and they showed the pics of the aftermath; the kid face was smashed beyond recognition..still remember the pics each time I passed over those red sections..

The strange thing when we complain and complain and hope something is done, still we see red tiles. Its not the tiles but the paint that is causing the slipperiness. WHY??? why nobody listens????
