hello! i've been riding my honda sp for a while now. and i know nuts about maintaining my bike. any tips that you riders out there can give me?

all i know is what i've heard from friends or read from forums. maybe you all can give me some clarification?

1) heard you should send your bike for servicing at motordiam every 3 mths like tt? what do they do for you and how much does it cost? any difference between this and 'FULL' servicing?

2) how often do you have to lube & clean your chain? heard it's 1 wk?

3) the uncle at the shop i got my motor from told me to spray wd40 at all the moving metal parts? is this to lube it or to prevent rust?

4) what can i do to maintain the bike on my own?

please help and discuss and i hope that this thread can be a guide to any new or less experienced riders out there(like myself).

thanks alot!! cheers!

Tell you something shocking, all those lube chain, cleaning of chain and changing of Engine oil (oil), i haven't done it for like....3 to 4 months. Every morning just start the bike and go. And the bike still can run. I haven't been diligently taking GOOD care of my bike. The old birds might say that this problems la that problem la might occur if u dun do all this maintanence la... Up to u to heed... I'm just plain lazy....

1) heard you should send your bike for servicing at motordiam every 3 mths like tt? what do they do for you and how much does it cost? any difference between this and 'FULL' servicing?

depending on how frequently u use the bike

e.g. a person who covers 10000KM per year is different from another one who covers 30000KM per year right?

there are different definitions of servicing to different pple

to me:

(Every 5000KM travelled)

basic servicing = change spark plug + engine oil

(Every 15000KM travelled)

full servicing* = flush coolant + wash carburettor, piston, top block and valve

*items to be done in full service will usually encompass those items in basic servicing as well

take note that these items under basic or full servicing are different from the things u need to do on a more regular basis i.e. once every 1 or 2 weeks

example:

brake pads (check for wear and tear)

chain & sprocket (check for wear and tear + lubricate)

tyres (check for wear and tear)

2T (check if 2T level is low. topup if required)

2) how often do you have to lube & clean your chain? heard it's 1 wk?

depending on how often u ride yr bike and how u ride it, the type of lubrication u use and your own attitude.

generally if u can do it once every 2weeks or so, u are somewhere on the right track.

3) the uncle at the shop i got my motor from told me to spray wd40 at all the moving metal parts? is this to lube it or to prevent rust?

WD40 is more commonly used to remove rust and to provide slight temporary lubrication.

4) what can i do to maintain the bike on my own?

refer to point number 1

Extra section on chain lubrication:

- u can choose to use engine oil (4T) or lubricants specially made for chain lubrication uses

- a chain can definitely still run even if its not well-lubricated. but it will wear out faster as well. so u can pick yr own preference: go for the convenient wear and let the chain wear out faster OR to lube it religiously and prolong its lifespan

- the way u ride yr bike plays a major part on chain wear and tear. if u tend to accelerate hard, dont expect yr chain to last long.
