Hi guys,

I am sure many of you have installed voltmeters on your bike.

Mine is the Dynamix digital one.

One tiny problem.

The voltmeter is taking reading from the bike after the main wire goes through the ignition switch. In other words, the reading is not from taken from the battery directly. But if I connect the voltmeter to the battery directly, the voltmeter will always be on, no matter whether my bike is started or not.

Any of you guys installed a relay of sorts on the voltmeter before you connect to the battery? Please advise the brand, price, location to get this relay.

Thanks!

Tried b4. Using the normal horn relay as i got extra. And i use the speedometer signal to switch on the relay.

You don't need to put a relay for the voltmeter.

The connection method via the ignition is correct. Another method is to tap from the fuse box.

The reading should be consistent regardless where you tap the power from.

as most of the connections are parallel. the reading is rather accurate..

is there be slight diff in accuracy is due to the resistance of the wire harness..

if u want very accurate ones, there are other brands of voltmeter which need calibrate annually..

And the calibration itself can cost more than 5 times the price of the voltmeter itself ... :giddy:

tapping from ignition should be the correct way.

Hi,

thanks for the replies.

I got my reasons for wanting to tap the relay/ voltmeter directly to the battery.

While I was at my favourite bikeshop, the mech tap his handheld voltmeter and measured the readings against my bike voltmeter. The readings are consistent, meaning what is shown on his voltmeter matched my bike Dynamix voltmeter.

The only problem is the that he took a few readings at several parts of the bike.

1) Voltage at the battery source is like 13.6++.

2) Voltage at the first connector of the wire harness drops to 13.2+.

3) voltage at the ignition return path drops further to 12.6+/- only. And my Dynamix voltmeter is tapped there.

So now, you see the minor issue I had and wish to resolve? I want the actaul reading from the battery source.

Hence the request as to where I can buy the relay.

So...if anyone know where/ brand/ how much for the relay, please advice.

Thanks and have a pleasant day/ ride. :)

how old is yr bike??

the drop should not hav great diff..

u can purchase at sim lim tower for the relay..

the most important is how u secure the replay on the bike..

cos vibration will cause the relay to shorten its life..

u can get Bosch ones.. but rather exp.. forget wat is the cost le..

Thanks bro for your advice.

My bike is 6 years old and counting.

The main wire loom, rectificer, battery are less than 1 year old though. So the main culprit I suppose is the ignition area.

But other than the drop in voltage, gave me no problems whatsoever. Just wanna to get the actual reading.

Thanks! :)

hi bros i need help here.

using a analogue voltmeter here.

when i turn on the ignition, my voltage is about 11.5v

when i start the engine, voltage is about 12v - 13.5v max

the voltmeter sometimes fluctuates from 12v - 14v like a antique clock.(very disturbing when i ride)

riding when vtec opens will give me a more consistent reading of 13.5v

stopping at traffic light will bring the voltage to 13v.

is this normal for a spec 3? or my battery sot liao? if i m not wrong, mech connect the wires at the headlight. 5 point grounding have been done. pls advise bros. i thank you for your valuable feedback.

Normal reading of a good battery when engine is off is between 12-12.75V.

If u go Planet. I reccomend you look for the mechanic, Mark.

He traced the battery connection on my bike and found the problem/voltage loss.

Nice and very competent guy.

seems like your ignition switch wiring got a problem. troubleshoot that first bro!

i do agree, the deviation in the reading should be very small.

no matter where u tab, as long as voltage is consistent batt shd be healthy.

juz dat diff reading at diff place. take dat normal reading at yr base reading.

if voltage drop or not goin up when moving.. someting is wrg.

simple as dat..

guys im having a bit of battery voltage problem here. :(

when i turn on ignition, voltage is about 11.2v - 11.5v max

when i start the engine, voltage is about 11.8v - 12v max

when i rev to 4 - 5k rpm, voltage remains at about 12v + -

when i am cruising, voltage jumps around 11.7v - 12.3v max

my dynamax voltmeter is connected to my headlight if i'm not wrong. is there something wrong with my battery? seem like its not charging and the readings seem abit wrong.

i just changed new battery. :sian:

some advice for me thks. pocket burning big hole already, dun want anything to spoil further. lol.

Nelo, check ur rectifier .. Re-wire ur voltmeter, tap it from the fuse box is better than the headlight ...
