One size does not fit all

There are shops who look nice but don't know a thing;

and those that rely too much on their brand name.

Still others who smile only if you've got the moolah;

Because the sign has a H and a D.

Sometimes you pick a place to buy;

Others you visit for their specialties.

Because they're good at one thing;

and crap at everything else.

So off you went,

into the mototiams' world.

And you'll tell us then,

Of what you saw;

Better to educate us all in turn :D

Left my bike with ah chong yesterday morning for top overhaul.

He told me will call me to collect once it's ready either yesterday night or today.

Till now still no news about my bike...:(

How long does a top overhaul usually take?

Planet Motorcycles (Ah Chong) is able to do a top overhaul within a day, despite the request being of an "impulse buy" situation, and the day being a Saturday, and the bike in question not having seen a doctor for over 6 years. It's the one Phantom I tell stories about still going somehow despite sounding like a tractor.

You will get to see the health of your engine by the colouration of the pistons, spark plug etc as they dismantle.

Just be sure to start in the morning. If queue, you have to wait for all the Super 4s to go away first...

However the average standard for anything involving disassembly of the block or more serious, is about 2-3 days. Depending on how busy they are.

New piston...the feel of the bike and the sound got big difference...kind of not used to it.

Now hearing more different types of sound. :o

After ride home park in mscp...i smell a hint of burning rubber coming from under the seat...not sure am I imagining things or not.

I overheard the price rise news just now also.

Did you change EO just now at planet in the evening? :?

Ya...Chong tell me don't go pass 80km/h for first 1000km/h...Just now at expressway was struggling with all the tailgaters behind me...:o

Your speed may be limited during run in but regardless try to run through all the gears and rev the engine freely (but gently; vary the load). This will help the piston rings wear in better and give you more compression.

Which means a better performing engine. Don't just cruise slowly on the e-ways, take her out on the backroads and exercise :)

Mine's always the first off the traffic lights for a reason :3

There were 3 or 4 Phantoms changing EO or doing minor repairs just now. Guess which was me :3

I noticed this engine developing LOTs of torque if you put her in constant acceleration, so engage clutch as low as possible for maximum power off the line. I launch from as low as 1000rpm and keep the piston accelerating. That heavy flywheel is there for torque!

Once you clear the critical first 20kph overcoming the Phantoms big fat inertia maintain the high RPM through the rest of the gears and before you know it you're cruising along faster than most others if not leaving everyone behind.

Try to use the punch of the low to mid range RPMs... it does surprise the heck out of people. Don't bother actually racing with anyone, of course! Cos if you ride a Phantom gently she's fastest this way. No real use at all whacking the throttle open without first generating momentum.

Carmen's Revenge with a rose?
Guilty as charged lol.

I got a shock after changing EO. The idling was almost completely silent. So I sort of staggered off U turning away with a look of surprise on my face.

Haha...I saw you wiping your bike, damn clean! :lol:

Make me feel bad a bit for not wiping my bike recently. :o

After top overhaul, Chong told me my carburetor not good condition also...the idling sound very irregular. Don't know why...after the top overhaul, my bike still sounds loud. Like not much difference, except for more sounds which I never heard of.

Ah Chong tuned my...carb? (the knob below fuel tank and above spark plug) too high, after I leave...I accidently made a wrong turn and when stopping at traffic light, I close throttle but the engine throttling sound continued all the way till I come to complete stop...Shocked me a bit...lucky never go up expressway yet. So I ride back to let ah chong tune it lower.

Just now went to pump petrol...went to my bike in mscp.

First time since I bought this bike, electric start, engine roar for 1-2 second then die. Tried starting few more times also like that.

So itchy go adjust the knob...adjust here adjust there, finally get it started up and running 'smoothly'. I think the setting messed up already...not sure what to do. :(

Clock wise/ anti clock wise...what does it change?

Will the knob only change it's setting after ignition off and restarting the bike? Can it be adjusted on-the-fly?

One top overhaul and the bike become a stranger to me...kind of regret getting it repaired. Piston jam seems to be a better problem to keep my mind on instead of random little things like these. :cry:

Maybe going Koon to install crash bars tomorrow...does the people there know how to set the knob?

Just read through the manual...Knob = throttle stop screw

Morning fellow PKs,

been riding for almost a year, recently encounter this situation several times during these 2weeks.

sometimes on the move,when i attempt to change gear from neutral to 2 ; or vice vera. the changed gear will suddenly jumped back to the original gear...

can anyone advice me what could have went wrong?:cry:

the only difference i can identify right now is the theres rackling sound like metal knocking metal sound eps. during gear shifting.

wrong clutch habit? chain tear and wear? or other illness my phantom is suffering?

small problem la bro... :) just go back ah chong n slowly n calmly explain ur problem... :) he sure help u one... e knob u talking about i think is e idling knob... if u turn it one direction, e idiling of e engine will increase, u turn e other way, e idling will decrease... not a big issue... ur bike will slowly b fine over time... :)

ah koon can adjust for u... but u know, u overhaul at somewhere else n want ah koon to tune for u? i think he not gonna b very happy... haha, cause he also got do overhaul... just go to koon for ur mods and planet for any technical services... :)

I don't have an rpm meter...how do I know what is the original setting? :(

I'm living in the west...planet is at ubi, kind of inconvenient to travel there for all the small problems. And when I'm not comfortable with my ride, need to travel so far kind of scares me (ie. Bike stalls and die off on expressways...something like that).

Can PM me the address and details of the clinic? I see the thread address Bayshore condo...can't find the exact location with that name on street directory.

Maybe drop by this saturday. :)

I could type up a damned huge post on carburettor settings here or we can meet up this Saturday @ clinic and I'll demo with my bike :)

clinic thread ™ is at http://www.singaporebikes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195464&page=35

The idling screw is just that, setting your idle RPM and should not be used to tune the engine. However excessively high or low idling have disadvantages. You should tune the idle to about 1500 RPM which gives you a mini-Harley style "bop bop bop" engine note that's quite pleasant and not too slow as to be close to stalling.

Idle screw turn right to increase idle RPM, turn left to decrease. You can use this to optimise fuel consumption and throttle feel on the move - start with slightly higher idle, and once at operating temp, set it really low. I do this at the traffic lights as temperature does affect carb settings.

If your throttle response is very bad (ie, engine continues revving away after closing the throttle) I suspect I could optimise your fuel-air ratio as well.

Too rich a setting and the bike is just loud and spongy-feeling, too lean and temperature very high.

I just now went to start my bike.

Totally cannot start at all unless I tune up the idle speed.

Really need visit the clinic this week to get help from you guys. :(

Really upset over this cause this problem didn't exist before top overhaul.
