I started part-time work when I was 17. I started full-time work at 18 after dropping out of school. Build that 1st career until I was 24 and then mid-career switch to my current job now. Sad to say, I took the long way to get to where I am today...:(

I felt very helpless when i had to study at an "old age" i think most singaporean males go through the same process if after ns go tertiary edu.

the important thing is your foundation must be solid, then u can climb high. No point let u go out and work now, and for the next 10 years u hentak kaki.

It felt good to earn $2k+ a month when i was 21 y/o. But i know that is not the way to go bcoz sadly in SG, u need the paper to start off in a better position.

I ended my "pain" by convincing myself that it is not my problem YET. That means very strongly that my parents gotta continue working still.

I mean, comeon, both of them are still not 65, cannot be they want to stop working totally and totally depend on their children ald.

Not cannot, but NOT TIME YET. At least let the children stand on our own 2 feet 1st ma. else all sink together... :faint:

Im lucky in a sense coz i haf siblings to help "dong" the situation for now and i just haf 1 last year of studies.

So i think u haf to talk with ur parents and let them noe it's not that u dun wan to contribute, but u r in this situation and cant, YET.

be patient with yourself. only you will know when is the right time for you to settle on a job. starting at 21, 25, 28 isn't that much different when compared to the many years you have ahead of you. some people start early but progress slowly. others start late and progress fast. its all very individual.

the most important thing is to be fully involved in whatever your endeavour is at the moment. this gives you the opportunity to perform at your best, be it in school, NS, work or play. when you perform at your best, you will enjoy the process a whole lot more.

don't be hard on yourself if you find that you switch jobs. after all, the right job may not find you until later in life. life is hard enough as it is. so savour whatever you have and move on when it is time. only you will know what is right for you.

as for me, i started supporting myself from 17 by giving tuition. started my first job when i graduated from NUS at 23. stayed with the same company till now. i am fortunate to have found something i enjoyed doing. it is time for me to move on as well. so this year (or next) shall be my last working here as well.

hope this helps you!

Lets work this out together.

Suppose you get married at 30 yr old (if you ((or your family)) haf the financial muscles) and own a child at 32 (shot-gun incident not taken into consideration), you can forsee that you will slog for the next 20 - 25 years (depending if your child is gd at studying or not). And when you reach 52 - 57, you start saving for retirement (if you plan to even do so) and retired at 65, how much life are you left with?

The question is not about what career you should go into, but which career can enable you to spend more time with family, watch your kids grow up, make sure your wifey (or hubby) stay faithful, and still have time to do what you like.

If a household income is less then 5k a month. You can only have a house (HDB), a car (Japanese or Korean), and a child/dog (your preference), or you can live off your parents/in-laws (your preference too).

Any job should provide you with 2k a month, anything less, you're simply wasting time. And by 30 yr old, you should be making 3k - 4k a month even if it takes 2 jobs. Don't give yourself excuses about "not having experience or cert", blah blah blah.

The question is "How hard are you willing to work for your future (or what remains of it)?"

The answer "Whatever you want is outside your comfort zone."

Don't waste time 'trying' out which career suits you. YOU, of all people, should know what you want.

Save for retirement :sian:

Half leg into bucket liao :faint:

The housing loan will tie u for long time. If u have more babies, more to save for their educations. I can't find any spare for retirement unless u are earning big :thumb:

Around 26 most probably where I'm 20 this year. Still need to complete NS and get a degree prior to working. Still got a long way to go...

Why not take a part time degree when u're in ns? So when u ord, will be half way to completion or even complete it if u're posted to a ofc hour unit/vocation....

Starting ur career as early as possible with a degree would not do u harm.. eg, after o level, go poly then enter ns & start pt degree after bmt... by the time u ord, around 22 yrs old, take few more mths to look for job & complete ur degree.. work 5 yrs then take ur masters for 2 yrs.. so before the age of 30, u'll have ur masters & 8 years of experience.... That is all the paper qualification & experience u need for any job/positions.. so these things would not stop u from seizing opportunities... it will then all depend on ur capabilities & a little bit of luck...

Starting at 21 vs 28 means 7 years of cpf contribution. Even with a flat salary of $2k/mth for the entire 7 yrs, u'll have abt $40K in your ordinary account alone... find a girl who has the same amt, can go buy $400K hdb alredy...

hey folks...don't just get trapped into what society says is a meaningful life (i.e. career, spouse, home, kids, car etc). at the end of the day, the ones with a meaningful life chose to do what their hearts told them to do. it is important you listen to yourself so you can discern what is best for you. don't sweat it...just do it :-)

Thanks for the advice mate. I never thought of doing part-time degree as I'm afraid there'll be no time for me to study. Most importantly I don't have a clue how the NS system work.

You're saying that after BMT, I will have the time to go to school at night while serving the nation in the day and afternoon? This is not included if I'm chosen to go to SISPEC or OCS right?
