Guys just want to check with you all. How old normally you all Guys Start working? I'm 23 years olds. next year 24 and i'm still Studying. Parents are keep nagging toward me :(. How old u all complete your school and start to step out :dozed:.. I think the time i step out to work is around 25 to 26 years old already. Haiz..

Started at 25 and now I'm 37.

There will always be ups and downs but try to make sure the ups are more than the downs. Still learning everyday.

It's not good to stop learning becos thats when you start dreaming.

The first 5 yrs, dont look for money, look for experience, exposure and skills.

After that, the money will come.

To hit 5 digit per month by 30yrs old is not easy but highly possible with strong perseverance and some brains

good luck

5 digit per month in 5 years, reckon only sales and banking sector will have such possibility. Or maybe some illegal stuff haha.

I never believe in this thing called "career".

I believe everything we do goes towards building up our expertise and experience.

I stumbled into my first job because it was the one that offered the higher pay. At that time I only thought of earning enough to pay off my study loans and get married. This industry is quite specialised and it's not one of those you really think of where "building a career" is concerned.

At different stages of my life my work scope changed.

In my late 20s I was doing graduate studies. My job (with a GLC) was pretty boring, but it paid okay and I could go off at 5:30pm everyday.

I left this job just before it began its retrenchment exercise. I had a sense it was coming, and if I had stayed, I might have received a huge payout. But an opportunity opened up elsewhere and I quit.

My new job scope was not properly defined but it involved setting up a new business. Things were very fluid and no one knew how the business would evolve. You could say there was no "career path" to speak of but it was fine by me, as to me it was a very good learning experience on the ground.

After a few years I was promoted to another position with a clearer job scope. But things were still pretty fluid because of the way the business works.

At that point I had a clearer idea of where I wanted to focus. But there were some major projects going on and the timing wasn't right.

As of today I am able to focus on an aspect of the business I had wanted to take charge of for several years. Things are still very much fluid but the key thing for me is I am still constantly learning.

The worst thing is to remain in a job and feel that you are becoming stale. I had that feeling a few years back but I stuck to this job as I felt that opportunities would soon come.

I am coming to my 10 years with this company, going to qualify for long service award soon.

People ask me how can I stay in this job for so long. My reply is I was given a lot of opportunities and a variety of responsibilities. But I also did open my mouth and ask for those.

You don't sit passively at your desk and expect things to happen to you. If you would like your job to move in a certain direction you need to open your mouth.

My "career path" is still not fixed (I'm reaching my late 30s) but I'm not worried. If you are open to opportunities, the opportunities will find you. Anyway the job is not my life; I don't define myself by what I do.

I'm 28 and still in the 'building' process. What I personally do is set a long term goal (or dream if you may call it) which was for me, to be able to retire at an early age of ard 45 (*fingers crossed*:D) and enjoy the reaps of my hardwork (*double fingers crossed*). Then I set smaller goals in 5 year stages. I started when I was 25 then, and I had 4 sets of 5 year plans before I reach the age of 45. So I took a little risks and try some things that I felt will work out for me. What I hope is to reach the targets that I set within the 5 years.

That is the gist of it. As I said, I'm still in the 'building' process. My first set of 5 years is ending soon so I hope its good.

You know when our elders keep telling us to stop dreaming? I never agreed with that notion. I felt that dreaming big is to push us to believe we can achieve something. A target we can set for ourselves. You just have to take a lil risk and go for it. Just be prepared that things might be a lil bumpy. Even if you fail the first time, if for my case, I still have 3 more sets of 5 years to try again. Don't give up!

Cheers to all my buddy forumers and :goodluck: !!

hmmm... come to think of it. i started out working a few months before I officially graduated from poly at 19. Worked there for 2 years and I feel the need to pursue my studies, my first job as a veterinary nurse was my passion but i had to leave because the working hours was too long and the pay was already highest they can go.

passion or the need to upgrade oneself? i chose the latter, during the recession last year, my lecturer from poly whom I still keep in touch with, told me about an opening as a research assistant in nanotechnology field. It offers higher pay and better incentitives. However, it is little to do with my field of study and not something I am not passionate about.

have been there for 1 year, somehow i don't feel the satisfaction i get from the previous job. but i am staying on because its working hours allow me to pursue my part time degree and offers better pay so I can pay off my tuition fees. I am trying to hang on until i finish my studies in 2 years time.

when i graduated, i hope to head back to working with animals but this industry is something that does not pay off that well unless you open a veterinary clinic.

so I am in a dilema on what to do when I graduate? Continue on my passion or hop on to something that pays off better but you are not passionate about.

I thought about being my own boss dealing with something I am passionate about animals and motorcycles.

People tell me, I am still young, coming to 23 in a month's time but my mum is not getting younger. She is 58 and toiling away for my sister uni education fee. If I can make enough, I hope she can retire. I could tell she is very tired and also mentioned that she doesn't feel like working anymore if not for my sister's education.

ok, i got to head back to my books. studying for exams next week.

I agree.

Luck is an element or a factor in the equation which takes it to another level.

Anyway, my guess is your friend who at 25 is making near to 5 digit is holding a job as some kind of agent. eg. property agent, insurance agent etc.

Otherwise, it's not possible or she has the connections

Just remember however much money one makes, remain respectable and treat people with dignity. otherwise :faint:

Hahaha... They always reply me "unsuccessful due to overwhelming response"

Damn, if that has got nothin to do wif luck... I seriously dunno what has it got to wif? I fulfill all requirement wat.... :(

Yeah, i admit, kind of my fault, when i actually gotten the course... I rejected it due to a lasik op. Was workin nite shift when i gotten the course. In my heart, was thinkin, good time to save up the money for my lasiks, so i chose to reject the course and continue the nite shift to fulfill my lasiks. Now after completin my lasiks, damn i can't get into the course.

That happened to me. In fact my friends were very surprised I got rejected since I am qualified (some say over qualified). Sure there's disappointment, as this was a course I had wanted to do for a very long time. But when I was rejected for a 2nd time, I had to consider whether I really wanted to pursue it.

After several months (close to a year) of feeling upset about it, I finally came to terms with it. I decided that I will not pursue this any further. When I made that decision, suddenly NEW POSSIBILITIES opened up.

You see, when you become fixated on that one thing, your mind closes itself up to other possibilities. In a sense, you short-change yourself because you think there's only one way to go, which is not true.

Give yourself the freedom to decide what you want to do for yourself.

Nice to hear that new possibilities opened up for u....

But in my industry, that is the oni course that would allow me to advance in my career path....

I did part time after O'levels at 16.

Enter NS when 18, ORD at 20. NSF for 2.5 years.

Went to Uni in Australia, turn 21 there.

Graduated at 23 and started out working full time.

Now 5 years with the same company and turning 29 soon.

For Sg Males, because of NS and if you further studies, you will start working in your early twenties. Poly students do it around 21/22. Uni students start around 24 or 25.

I managed to grad earlier because my degree only 3 years. I did an entire semester during Summer holidays to shorten my time in Australia.

The only ones I know who start career early are people who sign on. They enlist = start of career liao. Or rare case - they did a VEES - Voluntary Early Enlistment Scheme.

There are those I have met during NS who went through a long road as part of the Sg Education system - did P7/P8, Did N, then O, went Poly. Serving NS around 22/23 years old. I know 1 or 2 who then went on to NUS/NTU. They know that when they come out, is 28/29 fresh grad.

Unfortunately that's the way in Sg. Can you imagine how I felt when I went Uni in Melbourne? my course mates were Kids fresh out of high school.
