Stoner denies career under threat

By Michele Lostia and Simon StrangThursday, August 27th 2009, 11:16 GMT

http://www.autosport.com/images/upload/1244468099.jpgFormer MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner has dismissed speculation that his career is under threat from the mystery illness that has forced him to take a break from the sport and says he is determined to return in time for the Portuguese Grand Prix.

Ducati is about to embark on its second race weekend without Stoner, following the 23-year-old's self-imposed three-race break to try and shake the post-viral fatigue doctors say has stricken him down this season.

The sabbatical has prompted speculation over the 18-time grand prix winner's long-term future, but Stoner has strongly refuted such suggestions.

"I haven't lost my love for bikes and racing," he told Motosprint this week. "And neither for Ducati. My plan is to return to racing as soon as I get my energy back.

"The objective is still to race in Portugal."

Stoner says he has no plans to walk away from the sport: "I would like to carry on racing for a few more years, because racing a bike is what I hope to be doing as soon as possible. I just need to recover and to get back to a level of form that allows me to do that well."

He admits however that he felt compelled to stop now and recover, and admitted that he had been frustrated by his condition: "At one point I started having a bad feeling: I felt vulnerable, and I found myself in the position of someone doing something he hates. It's like finding yourself doing a job you can't stand, but that you have to do anyway.

"It was a really bad feeling for me, to realise that while I was riding my bike, while I was racing and fighting against my rivals, I was really pushing to the maximum, I was giving it my all, but there was nothing I could do to avoid those results I don't like. They are not up to my usual level of performance.

"This [break] was the only possibility I could see. I convinced myself that I had to detach myself, for a short time but completely, from what I was doing: I had to disconnect from racing.

"The most frustrating thing is being unable to ride my bike perfectly. It's bad for me, for the team, for Ducati. This situation is difficult for everyone.

"I can make shift and manage injuries, but I can't manage something I don't know."

Stoner believes that his condition has been provoked by pushing himself beyond his physical limits this season. "I'm certainly not the first athlete to do that," he said. "I have got to the point that I need rest, because the fatigue has become too much to recover as quickly as it should.

"I can't come to terms with the fact that I can't ride to the best of my abilities. The Desmosedici is capable of winning, but I'm not. At least not at the moment. That's why I've taken this break: I want to rest, I want to find again the energy to go back doing what I used to do before with this bike."

Stoner's father and manager, Colin, says that his son's break from the sport is already beginning to show signs of having worked.

"It's been positive, and in fact there are already positive signs, recovery signs, just for having rested a bit and for having completely reviewed the nutrition and preparation programmes," he said.

"He is following a program designed to allow him to rest completely without thinking of the races. On top of that he is on a different diet and he takes some medicines."

"Casey's objective is to return in Estoril. The only thing that could change this programme would be a worsening of his physical conditions, but that would be completely unexpected.

"If everything goes well, Casey will be back for the final races and then he will rest at the end of the season, since after the Valencia test he will have the possibility of a rather long winter break, before coming back in good form in 2010."

Yamaha Motor Company., Ltd and Yamaha Motor Europe N.V. have announced that an agreement has been concluded with Ben Spies for his participation with Yamaha for 2010 and 2011.

The program foresees a season in 2010 with the Yamaha World Superbike Team based in Gerno di Lesmo, Italy and a switch to Yamaha's satellite MotoGP team for 2011.

Laurens Klein Koerkamp, Racing Manager Yamaha Motor Europe said, "we got to know Ben this season in our Yamaha World Superbike Team as a very talented, professional and dedicated person with whom we are thrilled to continue working. Not only is the relationship between Ben, the team and Yamaha in general very successful but it's also a pleasure to work with him. This early agreement permits Yamaha and Ben Spies to now fully focus on their 2009 World Superbike campaign in their challenge to achieve their first World Superbike Championship titles together."

Lin Jarvis, Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing added "we are truly excited about the prospect of Ben's arrival into our future MotoGP program. Ben is doing a great job for Yamaha in his first season in the World Superbike Championship. He is in great shape to challenge for the title this year and we will be rooting for him at the remaining four events this season. Ben's primary mission is to win both his and Yamaha's first World Superbike title. After that when Ben eventually makes the move to the MotoGP championship we will be ready for him and, in line with the new MotoGP regulations, we will create a place for him within the Yamaha satellite team and give him the support he needs for his next challenge."

"I am very happy to say that I will remain a part of the Yamaha family," said Ben Spies, "and that I will continue in the WSB series for 2010. This is an exciting period of my racing career and I look forward now even more. Yamaha has been great in the warm welcome that I have received entering the world arena and I want to thank them for all they have done, and for giving me their trust for a next career step into MotoGP in 2011."

Haiz. Guess have to wait longer for Ben Spies to come to motogp. Hopefully by then Rossi will still be there and is still motivated to race in motogp.

2011 Rossi will go to Ducati I think if Lorenzo still at Yamaha

Posted

Spies will be in a satellite team in 2011 motogp. No way he's gonna win races on those, let alone trouble Rossi who is at the top order in Yamaha.

But I won't be surprised if Spies jumps the ship and goes to another manufacturer if he gets a good deal to be in GP next year. These guys can buy off their contract at will. Yamaha might well repeat Honda's mistake with trying to get Vermeulen win WSBK first before joining MotoGP. And for those who remember, Vermeulen was as hot as Spies was back in those days.

Aspar just closed deal with ducati for satelite premium class, probably

Alvaro will be pull by him too.

when is the rule, "new riders in motogp to spend 1st yr in satelite team" gonna kick in....2010 or 2011?

wat does satelite team or satelite premium class means??

Posted

The MotoGP aka 800cc side is considered the premium class of motorcycle racing..

Satellite Team = Not directly run by the manufacturer but renting the machine and parts from the manufacturer itself.

Eg;

Fiat Yamaha = Factory Team

Tech 3 Yamaha = Satellite Team

Repsol Honda = Factory Team

San Carlo Gresini Honda = Satellite Team

but manufacturer can supply satellite team riders with factory bikes, if they want a good rider in the team to excel. in present season, Toni Elias is using a factory honda, on satellite team. but its one grade behind pedrosa's model if i not wrong.

next season, melandri?

Reports suggest that 2009 World Superbike Championship leader Ben Spies has decided not to wait until 2011 to move to MotoGP, and will instead partner fellow Texan Colin Edwards at Tech 3 Yamaha next season.

According to Visordown Spies has 'already inked the deal' to ride for Herve Poncharal's team in 2010, despite a recent announcement that Spies would be staying in WSBK for one more year.

On September 4, Yamaha announced that Spies had signed a new two-year contract extension for 2010 and 2011.

The quotes from Spies that accompanied the announcement appeared conclusive: “I am very happy to say that I will continue in the WSBK series for 2010... I want to thank [Yamaha] for giving me their trust for a next career step into MotoGP in 2011."

However, the word 'foresees' in the statement itself triggered rumours that the schedule wasn't set in stone - 'The program foresees a season in 2010 with the Yamaha World Superbike Team and a switch to Yamaha's satellite MotoGP team for 2011' - while Lin Jarvis, managing director of Yamaha Motor Racing, carefully avoided specific dates:

"We are truly excited about the prospect of Ben's arrival into our future MotoGP program... Ben's primary mission is to win both his and Yamaha's first World Superbike title. After that when Ben eventually makes the move to the MotoGP championship we will be ready for him and, in line with the new MotoGP regulations, we will create a place for him within the Yamaha satellite team.”

Should Spies switch to Tech 3 a year early then it will mean that Englishman James Toseland is out of a job. Tech 3 has already made an offer to Edwards, which the 2009 MotoGP podium finisher is expected to accept.

Edwards is the top satellite rider with sixth place in the world championship standings, while Toseland is only 13th after a tough season.

Toseland finished his first MotoGP season in eleventh, and has claimed a best race finish of sixth in both 2008 and 2009.

Toseland's manager Roger Burnett has previously stated that the #52's other MotoGP options include Pramac Ducati and a possible new team, although the former double WSBK champion has a chance of more competitive seats in World Superbike.

As the only British rider in the premier-class, Dorna is likely to help Toseland remain somewhere on the grid.

Spies, a triple AMA Superbike champion who made his MotoGP debut as a wild-card with Rizla Suzuki last season, holds an 18 point lead over Ducati's Noriyuki Haga with three rounds and six races remaining in the 2009 WSBK season.

2009 is the Texan's first full year of world championship racing.

Rossi will win the rest of the races. I dun tink its gonna be that interesting... Stoner will be out of touch, Lorenzo will not be able to keep up, Pedrosa doesnt ride a Yamaha so he will lose.
