Hi guys!

While on my way back my pillion accidentally leaned to far to the back and broke the catch to "hook" my box to the base plate. The entire plastic catch is GONE! May i know where can i go to a shop which can repair my box and may i know how much it would cost.

If it's too expensive, i'm better off repairing it myself but i need someone to teach me. By the way, the diagram of my problem is below. My box is a Jintan 42L box(China brand i think).

As you can see from the diagram, the catch to attach the topbox to the base plate is broken. Where can i get it fixed?

Guys! Guess what happened to me today? On my way to work, after riding on the ECP, i was going downhill and then was going to do a turn. Suddenly, my box FLEW OFF MY BIKE! Wah lao! I faster go and park at the zebra crossing and pull my bike to the side. I at gear 3 no time to go to neutral just turned off my engine. I ran to my box and picked it up and faster ran back to my bike and signalled the car behind me to move on. They were a nice Malay family who smiled and waved at me. Then i fixed my box and slowly rode to my workplace.

When i was going home, i asked my colleague for some rafia string and cable tie. I slowly tie up my box after emptying it and secure it to my bike and rode home slowly on the ECP. Wah, super cartoon man.

I stopped by at a bike shop and asked the uncle what box they got similar to one i have. He showed me a Zeus 45L top box. He say come with acrylic baseplate. He quoted me for $95. I wanted to trade in my box he say what for but he say can put (throw) my box at his shop. For 95 bucks Zues Topbox with acrylic baseplate you think worth it? Wah, stressed man.

If anyone wants, i can sell my baseplate and box. Just tell me how much you want to give and i will consider. You can put your tools inside! You want lower just tell me you want lower see whether can. If not i let go to shop already.

yeah.. or can consider getting kappa, cheaper alternative to givi.. or coocase..

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.

Why waste your box? It is still very new. Just drill 2 holes on the box and through the base plate. Then find or buy from hardware shop 2 screws with wing nuts to secure the box to the base plate. You will have a very firmly fixed box after doing this. Why spend $95 when it only needs $2 to solve the problem.

My old box not GIVI ah. Anyway, i was in a hurry and lazy wanna go LAB. If i go LAB i have to buy there and go back to fix myself. I dun want LAB to fix. So i went to a bikeshop near my house and just got one GIVI Simply E450N w/o stoplight for $120. Expensive right? But then i rode to my friend house and show him my box and he paid for it haha. Took some pics there anyway. I think the box looks really nice.

i think its quite bad to make ur fren pay because u were using an inferior box to start with and that box was meant to be lean on. Your bike falling off the expressway after knowing it was loose was in irresponsible act. What if it was a father on the way home to his family? Glad to know you got your $120 issue resolved.

You think i so mean make my friend pay all ah? He paid less than half haha. He was already feeling guilty that he wasnt paying for most of it. Then again he is my friend. The funny thing is that he got the cheek to tell me that his friends always scolded him when he leaned on their box. This happened before he broke my box. I scold him he still lean. Then break. I laugh and cry at the same time. :) :(

And my bike did not fall on the expressway nor my box. It was a small road and i swear i didnt know my box was loose. :)

And just so you know, i have never met a rider who said that the box is meant to be leaned on. They all even said where my friend got the idea to lean on the box. Haha.

@crazydj,

I also have Jntan box. The exact same thing that you described happened to me yesterday, haha. The hinges behind my rear box that go into the baseplate slots broke off. In my case, it was my fault. There was gap b/w box and the metal baseplate and it used to make noise. So to prevent that, I put pieces of the cardboard in between. It was fine for a couple of weeks but suddenly yesterday both the hinges broke off, due to the pressure. Luckily I saw it while putting helmet and then strapped it with cable tie.

Then went to Tampines Industrial area straight away, to look for cheap used boxes, since didnt want to spend much on boxes. Asked a few shops and nobody had a working condition. Then suddenly at a metal engineering shop I saw a nice glossy but used box. I asked the uncle whether it is for sale. The uncle was very kind he said take for free lah, I dont need it. I was really happy and thanked him and took the box. The box was Vox racing brand and it looked very similar to JNTAN box. The metal base plate was identical. Then while installing it on my bike I noticed that the lock of the box was gone. I thought no wonder I got it for free, haha.

But then an idea struck me, my old boxes hinges were broken but the lock was fine. I also observed that the whole locking mechanism can be removed by just unscrewing 1 screw. So I removed the locking mechanism from my old box and put it to the new one and Tadaaaa! I have a working condition box for free and acquired some knowledge too :)

Just wanted others to also know this, I see people with boxes with locks gone and tie it with the cable tie. Instead they can just scout bikeshops and reuse locks from other waste boxes.

Yup that is a great idea. The Jintan box i realised one thing. The baseplate was metal and the box was plastic. Sure break la like that...

Anyway, i changed to a Givi box 45L. More branded abit. And i think what you pay is what you get la. The box still in excellent working condition, only the colour fade la, but the box still working perfectly.
