I dont know if this is the right place, but i do hope to get some advice.

I recently bought a helmet from a certain shop, and only realised that it has no PSB sticker when my friend pointed out to me after she wore the helmet.

What should I do?

Can I go back to the shop and ask for a refund? Or if anyone can explain to me why a helmet that is not approved can be sold?

hmm i guess so. but since it doesnt have a sticker, does it mean that its not safe? or is it just like a parallel import?

and also, i heard if kena caught by TP for wearing a unapproved helmet, will kena summon right?

From the TP on a related topic (helmet visors).

source: http://www.spf.gov.sg/faqs/traffic_tintvisor.htm

5.Can I get a refund if the helmet I bought is not within the regulations?

You would have to check with the shop that sold the helmet. Nonetheless, it is an offence for the retailer to sell any helmet that is unapproved. You may provide the particulars of the retailer to Traffic Police for investigation pertaining to the sale of unapproved helmets.

6.Is TP checking the suppliers to ensure that the helmets they bring in, and which we subsequently buy, are within the law regulations?

TP will conduct spot checks on the retailers if information is received of an illegal sale. Any retailer found flouting the law would be charged in court.

its like that, not every helmet is sent in for testing and approval. when i bought mine, i also realised its not psb approved. but its the model i want and i know its dot and jis certified for safety.

when you are at the shop, be careful where you look. cos some helmets are labeled "for export only" because they are not psb certified. but if you bought it, then either live with it, or sell it and get another one. don't think trying to get recourse from the shops is the best idea. this is my point of view.

Or maybe just check beneath the liner, the trend is to hide the sticker under the shell.

shunoski: i've checked the whole helmet, inside and outside, and theres no sticker.

i thought it'll be ok if i got from a reputable shop. but i should have checked properly i guess. maybe i'll just try going to the shop when im free. see if they will give me that exchange.

and nah, shouldnt resort to stomp for all these.

Use the search function.

There have been some long on going threads with regards to this PSB sticker issue which to me is a money making racket. That sticker does not mean that the helmet is safer than one without.

IMHO.. what is important is that the helmet is of a reputable brand.. reputable as in known worldwide, like Shoei, Arai, IXS, etc

Some cheap made in Thailand helmets of unknown brands have the PSB sticker.

A good quality full face helmet is not going to be cheaper than $400.

It is just a matter of how much you value your head.. and a sticker should not be an issue. Just my thoughts.

F**k the PSB certification! Even a $25 helmet has it but it's not gonna guarantee total protection for the wearer and this sticker issue has been going on for ages!!

hi, dont trust the psb sticker. it doesnt mean squat in terms of safety.

and dont report the shop la... it's not very nice imho... without them we will have less helmets around to choose from... no psb doesnt mean the helmet is not good... just means that its a model that less people will buy and usually expensive (usually higher end) so it's not cost effective to submit it for testing

next time when you buy helmet should specify that you need the psb sticker...

hopefully the shop will let you exchange...

boring rider. with a boring bike.

too old to want to appear interesting anymore.

the thing is, i've seen the same brand and same model helmet, with psb approval. that's why im eager to find out why mine doesnt have.

just be wary insurance companies might make use of the fact that the helmet u are not wearing is not psb approved and null your claims in an accident even if its a top of the line with all kinds of other international certification~

Anyone has any idea whether rejection of claims only applies to my personal injury? Does it apply to damage to the bike, which is not affected by what helmet I'm wearing? Can the insurer also tell a third party that because I'm not wearing approved helmet so they won't pay, in which case I am personally liable for damage to third party?

hm so much potential trouble ah. think i'll go back and ask the shop if can refund/exchange. at most get a new one. $$$

Have you got the facts to back this up?

Has there been a case before?

Or is this just something you heard? New bike riders might be misled into buying worthless PSB approved helmets.

Whats the point of being able to claim when you are already brain dead???? When it comes to the moment of impact... the PSB sticker does not equal to more protection... the quality of the helmet does.

I'd rather be alive than rich with insurance payouts but dead.

is it a problem if i took out the PSB from my sticker from my helmet? or does it have to stay on as long as i am using the helmet?

Cheap + fast = no good

Cheap + good = not fast

Good + fast = not cheap

Keep in within your helmet, if you don't wanna ruin the look of your helmet, just take it and paste under the shell. I did it for my Shoei Jforce III, so dumb of them to paste it on two ridges, minimal contact.

That little piece of PSB sticker does NOT automatically increase the protection level of a low end helmet made with low quality materials.

Quality and safety does not come cheap. You pay for the research and the materials used in the manufacture of the more expensive top end helmets.

At the end of it all.. its just how much you value your head.

Sad is the day when you need your helmet to protect you and it gives out on you because of poor quality but has the PSB sticker. By then, its too late to tell yourself that you should have paid more for a better quality non-PSB helmet... the damage is already done.

Game over.
