SITNews: Report motorists who throw cig butts out of car

POLICE would like to assure Mr Byron Chia Chung Han ('Smoking ban creates new hazard for bikers'; ST, Oct 24) that we will take action against motorists who act irresponsibly.

While smoking is prohibited in public-transport vehicles like buses and taxis, there is currently no specific ban against smoking while driving private vehicles. Nonetheless, irresponsible acts, such as throwing out a cigarette butt from a vehicle, may cause other motorists travelling nearby to be distracted or lose control of their vehicles.

Similarly, the acts of reaching for a cigarette, fiddling with a lighter, looking down to see if the cigarette is lighted and dealing with falling ash are also forms of driver distraction which may cause danger to other road users.

Motorists who drive/ride without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other road users can be jailed up to six months, or fined up to $1,000, or both. They will also be prosecuted if accidents or fatalities are caused by such behaviours.

Similarly, the National Environment Agency (NEA) will not hesitate to take enforcement action against motorists or passengers who indiscriminately throw cigarette butts or, for that matter, any other litter.

Our roads are only as safe as we make them. We urge all motorists to be considerate and mindful of the needs and safety of their fellow road users.

To keep our roads safe for all, it is prudent that motorists recognise the enormous responsibility associated with driving.

Feedback on dangerous and inconsiderate motorists, along with those who litter, can be given at the following contact points:

Traffic Police Hotline, 1800-547-1818, or e-mail [email protected]

NEA's 24-hour hotline, 1800-Call NEA (1800-2255-632), or e-mail [email protected]

hmm...

what about those idiotic drivers who SPIT out of their window?

Was a victim of tht before. Riding on CTE towards AYE and it was drizzling slightly. Weather was cold and all of a sudden feel something moist and warm behind my left palm. Chekced and found phlegm on it.

How? Spitting is already an offence but in this case...how to report?

Don't even know whose phlegm tht was.

Actually you can go to the Health Sciences Authority of Singapore near Outram MRT station. They will do a DNA analysis for you for a fee, less than 1 or 200 i think. Provided you have a witness, say a pillion, who identified the driver in the car plus car plate no, best is you see the driver face. Theoritically you can build a civil suit against him. Though it will most likely be settled out of court if you provide enough evidence to intimidate him and he will think "wtf? I spit out of my car also got cockster so free to take legal action against me?"

Is it worth it? Next time you kenna spit liao tell me if you try my suggestion :offtopic:

You do not know the source of the fluid, so there is nothing you can do about it. If you happen to know the person, remember the car plate number, car model/colour, basic description of driver, time, location, date.

As you can see, there is so much things to remember.

Then, you proceed to make a feedback to NEA. Think you can call NEA hotline.

It is an offence to spit.

Throwing of cigarette butts is also an offence. Can report to NEA via the mentioned method.
