Serious or not? I heard a number of Mito owners complaining in their thread about how the Malaysian mechs have never heard of Cagiva, much less see or know how to fix one

Previous posts in this thread has covered a number of issues ranging from valve cleaning to chain tightening. I am a lazy bum so I think I will just go and pay the mech to fix for me... I don't think I want or can spare a day to just sit down and dismantle my Planet. What is more worrying is that I might not be able to put it all back together... can just imagine the mech's face at Minerva when I show up with a box full of seperated Planet pieces... :cheeky:

hey all planet riders, am quite new to the bike scene but have been reading this forum for a few months now cos i'll be taking my TP this march so hopefully when i pass i hope to get a planet?

was just wondering cos ive seen that quite a number of you have a few persistent problems with the planet like starting and gearbox problems? if i were to get one would i be able to fix it relatively easily? cos ive seen that some of you paid like $200+ for the change of gear plate and servicing?

also just wondering whats the fuel consumption like on the planet? i've heard its about 25km/L?

this is my 1st bike so from my experience, I do not have a starting problem. I do not have any gear shift problem. Only thing is oil leak and the poor fuel consumption. I just top up the transmission oil whenever i feel it is low. going for a once over with this leak this week. The power is great though.

Word of caution is that this is a 2 stroke bike. Not like ur school 4-stroke. Power delivery can be abrupt and too much to handle if you are first time on a 2stroke.

i think with any >5yr old bike, there bound to be problem. just depends on how much time you willing to invest to learn about ur bike and DIY. Or pay to get someone to do it for you.

Hey GranDieu,

wats ur consumption like? I got about 16-17 km/l. Quite heavy.

hi all,

actually i have a yellow cagiva planet for sale.. if you guys are interested, dun mind giving me a call or sms @ 91993936 for discussion yea.. thanks for viewing!

After the cleaning I gave my electrical systems, I am pleased to say that my starter is A-Ok now  Starting the bike when I first go out in the day does not require me to use the choke much, just to get the bike engine going and I can close it off.

My gearbox is ok, no problems so far but I think I too experience a bit of an oil leak. There is a small plastic fairing thingy at the bottom of the bit that catches most of it so it doesn't end up on the ground... shows that this is a 'bike feature', like the false neutral :sian:

My empty light comes on at about 160+ km but its not blinking yet. I think that means I have about 5L of petrol left since the light is only supposed to blink at 4L. So my consumption is about the same as yours... about 17km/L which isn't all that good for a bike.

jagermeister,

About your question if 4T is the gear oil... I am not sure but I think it is. The stock gear oil used by the Planet is Agip's F1 Super Motor Oil which has a SAE rating of 15W-40, which is the same as Shell's Advance Ultra 4T.

The bad consumption is still okie for me as this is my weekend bike/playbike. Going to Minerva tomorrow and see if they can fix the leak. Hopefully they can clean the carb as well. see if the consumption improves... keep u updated.

just saw a yellow cagiva planet (i think) along yio chu kang road today.. really like it man.. but only thing for me now is i just realised its 16-17km/L.. thats really quite a lot for a bike.. which might deter me from buying this bike.. :sian:

Italian Meet - 13th March 2005

Hey, with regards to the meet on the 13th, are there any Planet riders going down? So far the list is empty... would like to go (schedule permitting) but don't want to be the only Planet there...

Just got my Planet back from a full service at Minerva. I think a previous poster put up a list of stuff that was fixed but mine is more recent :cheeky: Don't ask me what some of the items are cos I also don't know...

Spare parts changed:

8000 38203 Head 'O' Ring (S) $6

8000 47707 Head 'O' Ring (B) $7

8F00 49557 Cyl. (Cylinder?) Gasket $9

8000 27073 Exhaust 'O' Ring (S) $2

8000 46487 Exhaust 'O' Ring (B) $11

8000 30856 Exhaust Gasket $3

8000 64296 Valve Seal $9

8000 36380 Valve 'O' Ring $1.50

8000 47716 Valve Cover Gasket $2

8000 58048 Wheel Spacer $10

8000 66507 Air Filter $29

Sub-total Price: $76.08 (after 15% discount)

Consumables changed:

LUB 0009 Motul 5.1 Brake Fluid $8

LUB 002 Motul Transoil Expert $13.50

LUB 0015 Castrol Radicool $12

SPA 0014 NGK B95EGV (spark plugs) $13

EXP 0026 H4 Headlight Bulb $12

Sub-total Price: $58.50

Labour Charges: $90

Grand Total: $235.81 (inc 5% GST)

This servicing is recommended every 10,000km. According to the mech, minor service has to be done at 5,000 km but that only involves chain tightening, changing of gear oil and any other incidentals that might crop up. Fortunately, my bike didn't have anything seriously wrong other than that I was riding around without an air filter... wonder who is the itchy finger that took it out in the 1st place...

However, paying at least $200+ every 10,000km is not sustainable for me :giddy: I definitely need to find another motorshop that can offer the same service...

Posted

Okie. here's my view on ur next 10000km, i think you dun need to change air filter. so cut the $29 from ur total.

DIY clean it every 5000km. Wash and resoak with some form KNN air filter oil because the air filter is the reusable foam type.

Brake fluid, let them bleed loh. Its not very fun bleeding yourself. If they really flush out the old coolant and add in the new supply of coolant, it is also good.

If the consumables are still in good conditions, I think you just have to tell them dun have to change.

So the total would be much lesser now. Which is probably S$150?

Posted

I think they follow the SOP as laid down by Cagiva so when doing valve and carb cleaning, those spares will definitely be changed, especially since they are all either 'O' rings or gaskets.

The air filter was put in because I didn't have one. It is most likely not going to be changed during the next service as it is washable... at least I am not going to let them!

I am thinking of going down to First Motor the next time I need a full service, since most of the Mito folks go there.

   Just had a lesson today in Planet electrical maintenance... had a starter failure again but lucky it wasn't it some hot carpark in front of the whole world. Brought the bike down to Minerva and was going to make the mech tell me exactly what they did to fix it the other time... turns out it was a semi flat battery (

The mech was kind enough to charge the battery for me while I hung around and made a nuisance of myself. The only advice he could give me was "GO FASTER". I also want but with all the TPs running around, I have become a WUSS RIDER

I guess I have to be more aggressive in my riding then... probably will get cursed by every driver and some house owners for the racket I make but it sure beats having to push start the damn bike everytime the battery runs dry.

the moral of the story? never ride too slow or u get pushing exercise to do. :cheeky:

Can try riding all the way with the 3rd gear or 4th gear loh. Should be able to reach high rpm for charging.

Long time didn't ride liao.... going to collect tomorrow.... :)

I am scared if I push the bike too hard at low gears, something is going to break sooner or later, not to mention the awful Honda Cub-like sound :sian:

Planet repairs expensive man... have to ensure the bike is problem free until I get my 2A. But I am changing my riding pattern... either that or start getting used to push starts... which isn't such a bad idea... need to lose weight anyway... :cheeky:

Bike only charges at 6000rpm when you run with the headlight on.

What's 6000rpm on a bike with no tacho? It's about 1/6th of a throttle turn before the power band kicks in (i.e. the surge in power), depending on the gear you are in.

I would say 50kmh on 3rd gear should be sufficient to charge the batt (if you are on standard 14/41 gearing). Yes the bike screams like an angry hornet, it's what it was made to do :)
