Hi, new to st11 and recently went to view one. Can anyone advice on what to look out for? The owner was telling me that his exhaust when hot will have this Lao hong sound. His mech say no problem one. But to repair would cost 200+++ to change some fiber inside. Any advice on this? What other thing I should look out for dive the owner is unwilling to send it to my mech to have a look

Are you buying from owner or from work shop? Have you hear the start up of the bike?

The best way is to get the owner to meet you up at GOPA's place at Autopoint at Ang Mo Kio Ind Pk 2, to let him check extensively and he will advice you whether good to buy or not.

 

ST repair sometimes can cost you almost half of the bike purchase price

the owner is not willing to bring it to my mech which is nearer to his place whats more to bring it to amk... the start up sound normal. at least it can start and its not hard to start up. advice on whether to get it?

 

edit: what should i hear at start up? cos it sounded normal to me.

Bro, any sincere seller will be willing bring it if the sales have nothing to hide. How much are you buying the bike, what plate?

Do cater about $4K for repair works if the owner have yet doing 100k servicing for the bike.

 

Things to look out,

1. Oil lubrication leakages below

2. Exhaust pipes any signs of dam-ness (wet due to engine oils and other reasons)

3. The tyres used currently and the suspension responsiveness

4. As the owner to ferry you around on his bike, you feel the change gear and throttle responsiveness

5. The idling speed is it constant or the engine gapsing for air?

2. exhaust he told me that there is a lao hong sound when it is hot but his mech say its ok

3. suspension and tyre r ok( at least from what i know about tyre and suspension

4. gear change is smooth i rode it

5. idling sounds ok after it is warm.

Well, you can ask the owner to get the problems rectified before purchasing the bike also can. At least there is some liability from the owner and bike shop.

 

I can't advice much as i didn't see the bike either. Best of luck for your purchase.

For me i purchase my bike at 8.8k, spent 4.4k restoring it to almost new condition, inside the engine and braking plus the set of wheels and steering cones. So i know the issues of this classic bike

 

But after doing it, do a full load test for the bike, by riding the bike at 2nd gear to inbetween the red zone, 9k RPM for a few seconds 5 -7secs, then the bike engine at this level would prove to have no issues then, coz bike engine with issues cannot reach this level. No even close to 7k if even have problem. (For your info: Do this onli on a straight road with almost no traffic, coz it will reach 140km easily when at second gear reaches 9k RPM)

so the common problem of the bike is quite general? no specific area i should look into? and omg! 4.4k to set it up? that sux man!

Becoz the history of the bike is very variable depending on how the owner takes care of the bike. Not all have to spent that much, but for mind, 11 year bike i took over, lots of things when haywired, therefore have to arrest it one buy one.

 

But how much can you spare after purchasing the bike?

The few pieces of coolant hoses. Get it replaced when servicing your carburetor. It will breakdown at the most unexpected timing.

seriously bro, if the owner is not willing to meet you at a mechanic, walk away. I do not see any problem in bringing to a mech if you have nothing to hide. Its an ST. It will bring him from woodlands to change airport in 15mins. So why he don't want to bring for you? I always make sure my mech give me thumbs up b4 buying, n even if mech says need to change a few things here n there n nothing major, also ok for me. 2 of my bikes, one is a steed and another is my ST, both i told e sellers meet at mech the next day, they readily agreed, this shows me their sincerity n confidence that to the best of THEIR knowledge, nothing is wrong with the bike. just wait for a more sincere seller to be safe.

The few pieces of coolant hoses. Get it replaced when servicing your carburetor. It will breakdown at the most unexpected timing.

 

The 2 most crucial coolant hose r under the carb for both side of the blocks connecting to thermostat lhousing. If u r not using proper distill water mixed with coolant better have it check. Mineral residue overtime will occur to corrode the joints clamps causing coolant n pressure leak, imagine u r 10days away to home.

 

Another sneaky reservoir hose beside coolant cap connecting from the nipple, a little hair line crack will traumatized u over a period.
