if the idea that bigger means safer, then generally, that is true, with some exceptions like enron, onetel, HIH, Arthur Anderson, Marsh & Mclennan

, worldcom, ansett, tyco, AIG and the list goes on.....

The credit rating agencies, Moody's and Standard & Poor's, are ridiculed for failing to spot any of the last decade's disasters.

Then buying common shares is not for you? CAn you lose 50% of the money you invested?

If you cant then common share is not for you...

And asking people online what to buy is not a clever thing to do in the first place, for a starter play within your area of industries or complacence....

Nikkei today drop more than 600 points......

Few months later might be a good time to whack again.....

STI = sentiment driven.

And local sentiment always follows the loser, even though 3 others may be green. Maybe we're born pessimists.

STI = Jardine driven more like it... Easy to manipulate..

Hi,

Anyone familiar with the "Trade Summary" function on Kim Eng- and UOB Kay Hian's online brokerage platforms?

1) There's "bid volume" and there's "ask volume".

What is "mid volume (aka bundled trades / married trades)??

2) For every buyer of 1 share, there must be a seller who sold him that share. So since the bid and ask volumes are never equal, does this imply that "brokerages / financial institutions" are the counter-parties for the unexplained bid-ask volume difference?

I found out from reading..

- Bid volume indicates the number of sellers, selling the stock to the market makers. Since we typically sell at the 'bid'.

- Offer volume indicates the number of buyers, buying the stock from the market makers. Since we typically buy at the 'ask'.

- Married trade are where investors wanting to buy the stock are directly matched to investors wanting to sell the stock.

If bid vol > ask vol, more of the stock was sold by the market makers to investors.. indicating a short term sell-off.

If ask vol > bid vol, more of the stock was bought by investors from market makers.. indicating a short term buying interest.

Since market makers need to balance their books,

- if they are in a net 'long the stock' position, they will want to sell it the next day.. indicating more supply of the stock and hence drive the price down/ make it harder for a price increase.

- if they are in a net 'short the stock' position, they will want to buy it the next day.. indicating more demand of the stock and hence drive the price up/ make it harder for a price decrease.

That pretty much sums it up.. But if only life is such easy and the stock market is that simple to read... Lesser buyer DOES NOT definately imply a selldown and more buyer DOES NOT definately indicates a buy up... Dun buy juz coz there' more buyers..
