Recently got my hands on a 1997 version S after my majesty scoot of 6 yrs died of 'cancer' (my own negligence in not taking care of the bike). Gone thru a steep learning curve that even a 14 yr old S4 bike is 'hot' in JB. Putting myself as noob biker and in the online scene, appreciate any pointers here :

1. For a 14yr engine, do i use engine oil of viscosity 40 or 50? (Daily commuting at arnd 80 km). The shop mechanic recommended oil change every 3500,citing this is an old machine. Manual advised by 12000. Any safe timeframe for oil change?

2. How do I know which brand of engine oil is 'really' fully synthetic as they claim to be? Able to share?

3. Just using my bike for daily commuting only (hate taking MRTs and buses), changing to the 'friendly' version of the rear end supensions will suffice (or do i need to go back to Showa)? Got the feeling the current one attached to my bike is the chiong version and i see signs of leak and the rubbers are disintegrating.

4. After having the steering cone adjusted, there is no more knocking effect upon braking and cornering is somewhat stable, but after trying going fast (140) i still feel slight wobbling effect of handling the bike.Is this normal? By the way i do have a carrier box attached t the back.

Thnx

Hi akunga,

Welcome to the S4 family!

The S4 is an excellent choice... if regular maintenance and tlc is given, it will prove to be a bulletproof reliable workhorse!!! :thumb:

I cannot answer all your queries, however, I'll try...

i) the shop mechanic will ALWAYS tell you to change at around 3000km whether your bike new or not...

Yes, the OCI for S4 is 12000km, though we have reports from fellow S4 forumers changing after 15000km (this one special case, he was using the legendary ah pek's special blend of EO - we'll get more about him later)

In general, a fully synthetic can last at least 10000km.

How to know whether is really synthetic? It will say on the bottle synthetic, NOT synthetic blend

a safe timeline (it depends on your riding style actually) is 5000km or 6 months, which one comes earlier, if you are using at least semi-synthetic...

A showa suspension can be "rebuild"... i.e... seriviced.

A chiong suspension may not be necessary able to be "rebuild"

If you bike is totally naked (i.e without the head cowl and/or belly pan) + top case, it will start to be slightly uncomfortable from 140km/h onwards...

Now...

On the topic of the legendary ah pek...

If you don't already know, he is The Veteran in the cb400 forum here...

He knows the bike inside out...

sort of the cb400 S4 encik, liddat...

Hope he sees your post and comment on it

Agree with the brake dust issue. You may also want to scrub your brake rotors with scotchbrite and some soapy water when washing your bike.

Since you said its new, may be the pads not yet break in.

Thanks Izamo and Hair1..

Appreciate the kind advice.. Shall have it checked and update here..

Maybe u can start off by using a multimeter n check the battery Voltage..see if its above @least 12.6v (any lower voltage than tat, your battery koyak/cannot hold charge anymore)

If manage to start, see if your battery voltage increase till about 14v

Try looking at your charging/electrical system (battery/rectifier/ magneto coil)

Bring to your fav mechanic if unsure

Just my opinion.. I maybe wrong..

Do share your experience anyone..:cheeky:

just sharing, if any other bros is suffering this issue. today i just solved a problem on my Version S. was having a issue of loss power whenever i hit 5k rpm on every gear and exhaust will produce a blob blob blob sound at that rpm. initially was thought to be spark plug wet (i sms-ed ahpek for help haha.) but after around 10-15mins stop the bike resumed normal duties. so didn't think more but next day ride to work the problem came back, these went for a few days and finally i decided to go to ah chong today for help. he throttled my bike then tell me its the wiring "sot" liao. i was quite amaze to be honest cause he zero in the problem so fast cause he only throttle the bike. but also maybe i newbie haha. indeed after his mechanic redid the wires in the headlight area everything went back fine and responsive. kudos to him. one throttle knows everything.

p.s still have to thank ah pek for the prompt aid. but also sorry ah my question really abstract and vague ah newbie me.

side track abit, how much does a 40+ litters top box and rack cost ah? can intro lobang to fix at good deal?

Dats what happen to me recently, but dats the very reason that saved my bike from being stolen in JB :sweat:

I assume there's no issue with your battery,ie, lights/horn/signal works perfectly but the starter. If so, it could be your starter carbon (i stand corrected on this terminology). Try knocking it gently using the back of the screwdriver and see if it works. Yes, do bring it to the mechanic for further check. Was quoted $70 for the part excluding labour, but got it free under warranty.

Bro vespa-lover ,

If you don't have a DMM to check...

1 way to know if your battery got voltage or not, is when you press the starter button, your headlight and/or neutral light indicator will flicker...

Another way to see if your battery got lesser than normal voltage is, when you turn the ignition key to ON, your neutral light indicator and /or headlight is a bit dim than usual...

If it does, it can means that...

you battery cannot store voltage (old already... must change) and/or your rectifier cannot supply voltage to your battery to recharge. The rectifier issue is common for Ver R/Ver S/PB1... cause a lot of people buy "chiong" rectifier...

I kenna from a very very famous local bike shop parts supplier before... the bike died on me before 1 year of changing the rectifier... i think it was slightly more than 6 months...

Just my $0.02

Unlikely ur battery. Do this when it happens again..1) Spray some WD40 into ur assembly starter switch. 2) Sit on bike, clutch in and shift to gear 2, reserve the bike as fast as u can and than let off clutch quickly (u should hear a "whine" sound)...now shift to back to netural, "On" ur bike and start normally. If it starts, than confirmed carbon brush. The part is only $12-$15..labour is about $50 as the carbs all have to come off to access the start motor assembly (thee carbon brush is inside it). Good luck.

guys, I'm a gsxr400 rider. I'm looking for a S4 rider whose female pillion pointed a middle finger at me on BKE towards changi on 27/6/13 around 7.45am. I'm really curious why she looked so angry? because I cut into your lane when you were speeding chasing someone infront? I did signal. my years of riding I never pointed another rider in anger before just because he overtook me etc. I really don't know what made your pillion so angry that she pointed at me in anger at the other lane split. or did you ask her to do it? you're also the first rider I encountered scolding another rider. if I'm in the wrong, then I'm sorry. but if you want to play on the road and you can't take this type of incidents, very hard man. This S4 has a aftermarket exhaust, maybe blue flame.

How to check if correct pressure? Radiator cannot b clogged with the coolant is being used up fast, right?

Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

Hi,

Had a chat with Ah Pek yesterday. We talked about this amongst other things.

You gotta check the rubber seal on the underside of the radiator cap

if its hard, means no good already

if got crack, also means no good already.

If the radiator cap cannot provide a proper seal, you'll have coolant evaporating too fast from your bike.

There is an outlet on your coolant reservoir, that is supposed to be the only outlet for excess coolant to exit.

don't worry... a replacement set not expensive.

at FJT is about $24.

cheers!

Hi Ah Pek,

Nice meeting you yesterday (my friend was the one with Ver S, change eo with you) - sure did learnt a lot of things!

Many thanks for sharing your riding (and life) experiences to "youngsters" like us...

I was researching the possibility of The Bol D'or head project... Looks like for now my bike will stay as it is intended to be, naked! hahahaha....

Always nice to meet a fellow PB1 rider

Cheers! :thumb:
