Hi everyone,

I'm a new CB400 Ver S owner - I bought it about two months back. My first bike I bought brand-new, so this is my first time riding an old bike. I thought I was prepared for typical "old bike" wear and tear problems to crop up, but didn't expect to encounter quite a few so soon!

The bike has been leaking abt 2-3 small drops of dark oil every day (I ride it to work quite often), but I thought this was normal for an old bike. This has been happening since I got it.

Earlier today when I was riding it home from work, I stopped at the carpark entrance for the barrier when the oil warning light came on, when I tried to move off, the bike stalled. Electrics are working fine, cos I changed battery just a few weeks ago, so when the bike is in neutral, it starts up ok. Engine humming normally. But when I kick to first gear, the engine dies.

According to your experiences with the CB400... Is the oil leak the reason why it's stalling? What kind of repairs should I be expecting from the mech?

Quick history:

When I bought the CB400 I was hoping to build up some short-term experience (at least 1 yr) with a heavier, big bike, so I can prep for Class 2 lessons. Ride two months liao, feel like I really like this bike because of its power and response (cos my prev bike 150cc only heh), and despite its age I like its classic standard bike look. When I first bought it I discovered a piston jam issue; I decided to go ahead & fix the front brake even though the mech suggested I trade it for a Spec to avoid all the trouble.

Would really appreciate any input from any of you. Thanks for reading!

Checked your EO level?

Engine oil leaking is Never a "normal symptom for old bikes"

Hi, I changed EO only two months ago but I will get the bike to the mech to check asap for the reason for the leak and get it fixed.

Thanks for the reply!

If the cost is the same..a Spec 1 of course but then again..the condition may not be as a good as a good well kept taken care off Version S. Basically good stuff come at a price. As far as performance and maintenance is concern..either would be quite similar.

Just got my cb400 v.s today,

Anyone can tell me whats the rpm reading during normal riding at the highest gear?

Speed around 80km/h

Mine spec3, 80km at 5k rpm, gear6

Hey guys. Few days back I realised when I accelerate somewhere near 6k rpm @gear 5/6, it'd suddenly jump up to 8k rpm like as if I pulled the clutch in. It only happened a few days back and I dot know why. Yet to bring to bike shop as I wanna possible problems and solutions and prolly things I can do myself first before heading down to bike shop. Thanks

Hmm only that gear? Or when moving off when stationary also like that? Cause when this happens , mostly is your clutch slipping.meaning you have to change your clutch plates Liao

Hi bro was experiencing the same problem just that i dont get the oil leaks and my meter chiong one so the oil light cant be trusted.. but same thing when i in neutral everything okay but when engage any gear the bike would die, turns out it was my side stand sensor..cause the sensor would automatically cut off power to bike if side stand is on, and mine was faulty.. it could be the possible problem with your bike..

I should not be vulgar.

How old is ur battery...it could be a dying battery. If it's wuite new..you may have charging problem and the fault can just be the connector from coil to rectifier, rectifier or coil..pr all three.
