SSDC 13 Apr 04

Class 2 - 21 pass

Class 2A - 45 pass

It's a good day! Getting my new bike on Thursday.. very exciting!

Mel

Got my bike last thur.. parted ways with my Shadow.. *sob*

Been riding it for only 3 days.. still on my first tank of fuel

Effortless cornering..

Feels lighter than my shadow

Easy to handle

Pillion complaint that the exhuast feels hot after sometime

Got a few fake netrual.. resulted in engine stalled

Top speed at 5000rpm (6th gear) is around 110km/hr

Brakes and headlights works well

Windshield adjustable but still feels that it should be taller

Quite noisy comparing to my shadow400

Can't get any crash guard - must be imported

Eye catching- people wondering what the hell this is..

It's a fun bike.. hopfully it can be with me for the next 5 years..

im contemplating between the 650 and 1000.. really dunno what to choose..

Pros of 650

- Same fuel capacity as 1000

- cheaper rd tax

- cheaper insurance

Cons 0f 650

- No handguard

- no belly pan

- doesnt look as nice as the DL1000

- Normal cable clutch

Pros of 1000 is the same as cons of 650

Cons of 1000 is the same as the pros of 650 o_O

Do you feel that the 650 is underpowered when riding 2 up(pillion)? Since you own one might as well ask you

Hello fellow Vstromers soon-to-be...

I have never tried the DL1000 so I cannot compare the difference in power.

DL1000 will definately be better for riding 2 up especially if you have many luggages. It is also much louder than my DL650. Some like it some don't.

DL 1000 looks bigger due to the bellypan and the slightly bigger side fairing.

The seat also slighlty taller. DL1000 is also faster in terms of top speed.

I would have gotten the 1000 if not for these reasons:

Money(most important factor) : the 1000 is 3K more than 650, plus interest it will be more. Insurance, 650 is around $800, 1000 is around $1200. Age 26 first party.

Weight : 650 is 18kg lighter than 1000, not much but it plays a part on the handling. Singapore's traffic as u know, needs a bike that can squeeze thru cars.

650 fit the bill as it is slightly thinner and lighter.

Power : I don't go touring with a pillion. I only pillion my wife to work. So power is not an issue. With EFI, the bike is still a joy to ride. Can wheelie too.

Some other issues:

Handguards - In Singapore's weather, without a handguard is actually cooler.

DL650 handguard is actually available in Europe at Eur50, $100 here plus shipping.

Bellypan - It's needed to protect the engine. Aftermaket skip plate available for US$239

Crashbar - 650 cannot use the ones for 1000. Need to import. Can contact Chup lee or biketech. Givi is better in protection. Around $180... sw-motech cost me $250 but is the worse in protection, me lesson learnt.

The Vstrom is definately a head turner.. they will.. "huh.. what is that??"

So hopefully u can join the family soon.. and we can go for a spin.. like posers..

keke if you got $$$ go for 1000.. or like me no $$$ than go for 650

Thanks for your info, just made another visit to Mr Lee, and my heart tells me if i buy a strom.. i want it in the litre class.. i hate to think of power loss from my current bike.. you see if i were to ride a 650 i'll definitely feel its under powered, compared to my current bike..

Even if im getting a DL1000 the power will still not be anywhere near my current bike..but at least i know it has the extra bit when i do my touring speed.. while the 650 will max out at my touring speed.

As mentioned.. todays trip to Loois was to confirm my feel for the 650/1000.. sitting on both bike.. the 18Kg weight diff did not really bother me.. height isn't and issue to me too.. i jus loooooooveee and adoooooorrreee the 1000

Rgds.

Hi,

I read with interest about your recent purchase of the V-Strom... Just a question... does it come with the side and reae box. If not then how does one get it and at how much?

I'm seriously looking at getting this bike (The black one is really cool man) but first I gotta sell my car... Hope I don't loose too much on the dame thing...

melvinho,

if i get the vstrom1000, can we swop seats? ur 650 seat is 2cm thinner than the 1000, just nice for me. my height 167cm niah, so if use original 1000 seat must tip toe leh.

Hey Melvin,

Thanks for the "compliment" about my nic... couldn't think of a better nic. Thanks for the information man... I just check with Looi's motor today and apparently he quoted me about 15K OTR and he would recommend me to get the boxes from the dealers at a cheaper price.

This Mr Lee is really helpful ... Any idea who he is? is he the boss??? On the other hand, I called Mah motor and the sales person from there seems like the sky was gonna drop on his head and he could not wait to hang up the phone by brushing me of with 2 words... Quote "NO STOCK" un quote...

And the bike really is fuel efficient man at 19 - 20 per litre,.. I can't wait to get my hands on it man... any way that I can meet up with you and check out the bike?...

One sad thing is that I realised only today that the 650 only comes with 1 exhaust... All along I thought that it was a 2 exhaust monster man... :lovestruck: :lovestruck: :lovestruck: :bounce:

Hey Melvin,

Tried to see the bike at Looi's today and hit the nail when I realised that they may be closed... I can't believe that these people actually close on a Sun... the time when the rest of the population may be looking for a bike to buy... :giddy:

Anyways I'll try again tomorrow... if yu're still keen to allow me an audience with your baby do drop me a line at 91855577...

Thanks

Hi Melvin...

Apparently he let go the COE very high trick but perhaps it's because I'm 31 and my insurance would be alot cheaper and at the same time I would be paying cash for the beau... These are some of the factors contributing to the cheaper price tag...

You live in Serangoon North... yipee.. I actually live in Hougang... (a stones throw away) currently I'm renting a place at Bukit Panjang as I work in Jurong and it's more convenient for me to go to work from here but the owner of the place have rented the whole unit out to someone else therefore I've to move back to Hougang within the next 2 weeks... :weep:

That's the reason why I'm looking at owning the bike...:cheer:

1. Beautiful mileage

2. styloh

3. don't have to worry to much about traffic... although I know that after adding the boxes I would have to be extra careful.

Everythings pointing to the bike dude... Plus, I love to ride :cheeky:

Mag

It's aways a joy to ride..man!

The panniers will make it hard to squeeze thru traffic.. normally people only fix on panniers when going touring. The rack for the panniers will make a good crash bar for the exhuast..

Of course.. if u r skilled.. you still can zip thru traffic with them.. I always have the fear of getting caught and kanna the cars..so I perfer just the top box.
