Tapping sound on cold start ONLY may be

1) piston and/or rings loose (Don't bother to overhaul if bike runs fine after warmup)

2) valve clearance not within design tolerance at cold start. But as engine warms up valve stems expand and engine is quiet again

3) You need to circulate the oil before starting the engine (crank with killswitch ON and wide open throttle for 3 seconds), to encourage top end lubrication

Tapping sound ALL the time or when engine is hot (after a 110kph highway commute for instance)

1) Valvetrain chain drive ("Timing Chain") Tensioner needs replacement ($60 little part - tensioner failure = VERY LOUD sound)

2) Engine is overheated. Minor predetonation is occurring in the cylinder (Increase fuel-air mixture richness in carburettor for better cooling at high engine loads! Predetonation saps power and increases cylinder head pressure dramatically leading to reduced engine life. Predetonation due to over-lean mixture and excessive cylinder head temps leads to a soft ticking sound under acceleration.)

3) Valve clearances way out of design tolerance

4) Your bike is a Ducati with racing setup :D, a DR200/400, or other bike with naturally loud valvetrains.

Great theory! Thanks alot! I got it now..:) Any idea where is the shop that is selling honda original parts? I think mine still quite soft, was planning to get the chain here and go jb for a trip to repair it. Been quite a while since i got this bike and yet i haven't fix it. Any idea if this actually harms or damage the life span of the engine ?

The Honda parts shop is down the road from LAB at Jln Besar. I saw it while doing a foot recon in the area few weeks ago.

Without knowing your bike make and model I won't risk giving any specific maintenance tips yet.

Check this link for the addresses, there are several genuine parts dealers in the area.

You are encouraged to seek opinions from reputable mechanics like Ah Chong at Planet Motors who can prescribe the most economical and effective fix. I don't believe in jb mechanics.

Awesome. Can the HUD be done on other bikes other than phantom?

or a 1978 CB400N engine that was assembled in haste will also give you that nice tapping noise - "naturally"

walau-hei, looking forward to FINALLY meeting you adesmond2 & then you got back pain. hey, why not try DEEP HEAT / PANADOL / chinese medicine oil / plaster whatever whatever. nevermind, sincerely hope you get well fast enough to make it by then. :)

anyway, why not another petrol station where they don't have 2 in Toa Payoh. Shell ( next to Braddell MRT ) / SPC / Caltex ( junction of Bishan Rd & Braddell rd ) whatever i don't care. no more confusion over 2 Esso stations ( which one again? ). just suggesting...

Thanks & Best Regards.
