Hello all, esp Throttle,

Stumbled across this forum 2 weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised at how freakin extensive the experience here is. Some pretty hardcore aficionados around these parts it seems, and that’s a good thing.

Am a TOTAL newbie to cigars.

Am a 25 y/o guy, lawyer, married with no kids. Originally from India, finished school there, did Econ/Law in Sydney, OZ, and been working in SG since ’04.

Given the evident depth of experience, would be grateful for responses to a few q’s:

1. What are some good mild to medium bodied cigars a newb can try? I have tried a few Cubans (RyJ No.2, Ramon Allones Petit Corona, Cuabo (torpedo shaped, not sure of the series etc…)) but found them to be too strong for my taste (i.e. got way too light headed after the smoke). That may have had something to do with the fact that I smoked all of these to just above the band. The one I have enjoyed the most thus far is a Macanudo Maduro Hampton Court (Corona size I think), which I believe is a dominican.

2. What is a good place to get cigars from in SG? So far have bought from Oaks at Takashimaya and at Orchard Parade but was wondering if there are other good places with a good range and competitive pricing compared to Oaks

3. If all I smoke is 1-2 a week on weekends, at least for now, is it even worth getting a humidor?

4. Lastly, I see that a bunch of you guys get together to smoke every once in a while. Any chance of there being place for one more? I do not want to impose, so please feel free to say no thank you, especially if you think I’m too much of a newb to really enjoy your smoking gatherings, or whatever other reason. No issues either way since am sure you guys would be happy to answer my questions as an when I post them.

Looking fwd to your responses. Ciao.

Hola Riki,

First things first. Welcome!

1. It is clear that your palate is still much for the less strong and light bodied smokes of the Dominican Republic. Do continue exploring by trying different cigars of differnt origins. The strength and flavor of a Cuban is unanimously favored amongst a wider population of cigar smokers. Most of us remove the band at one point and smoke pass it!

As with many "vices", the more you do of it, the more you can take of it.

You are experiencing what we call "Buzz". It hits a new smoker much much more than a seasoned one.

2. La Casa at the Regent is a good place to get cigars for its comaraderie and availability of rarer smokes. Con D is also a good place for its variety and friendly atmosphere. Oaks is fine but the market talk is that the conditioning and storage is not tip top.

3. 1 or 2 a week now = 5 to 6 a week in future.

If you are liking this cigar smoking thing a whole lot, get a humidor!

Or better still get 2. IT will not stop there, believe me. hahaha

4. There's always enough place for another and another and another. There are Newbs who join us all the time. and we were all Newbs once. In fact the best way to share expereiences is to have a smoke with us.

We are having a cigar meet up this Wednesday, so please join us if you can.

Saludos.

Thanks for the prompt responses Throttle. Much appreciated.

Will try out La Casa @ The Regent and/or Con D for this weekend's smoke. If the staff are good as you say they are, should have no issues getting a good smoke reco.

Agree with you on the 'if you like it alot, get a humidor!' point. There are times when you feel like a break during a late night work session and a cigar would really hit the spot, and for those times a humi would be good.

Thank you for the kind invitation to join the smoke sessions. Prob cant make it on Wed as am caught up with work till Fri night. Will keep a tab on your next planned outings via the posts at this forum and will let you guys know when I can make it. Look fwd to doing that.

Any golf lovers here? Heard lighting up while playing on the links can be v.enjoyable. Any idea if we can get away with that at MBGC in Singapore? Am thinking its unlikely but good to know.

Look fwd to participating in this thread.

I used to play a fair bit of golf when i was your age.

Nowadays, i play only a few times a year during company sponsored Golf Events and other invites. still hit about 100.

Regarding smoking on the course, as far as i know, it's OK. Done it before (not MBGC though). But regulations might have changed over the last few years.

Try it and see.....heh heh

hey riki, welcome to the club!

for lighter smokes maybe u can try el rey del mundo choix supreme. a rather mild cigar, with a pleasant toastiness to it. sweet and floral, its still one of my favs until now.

as for the 1-2 cigar per wk part, im pretty sure if u like it enuf, u'll wanna invest in a humidor. not juz becos it helps to condition ur cigars, but its also aesthetically more pleasing to have a humidor on ur table, rather than a tupperware of some sort.

as for me, i did 4 last wk. damn... tats a lot for my standards! one per day from wed till sat. maybe i'll juz do one this wed. make it a long one. anyone up for a lusi tat nite? hahaha...

Hi riki i think it's better to get a humidor for your collection. Or you can just keep them in a lock n lock ware like me in the beginning. But SERIOUS WARNING that your collection and humidor will get more and more as times pass. I think a lot of people here are guilty of that....... hahaha.

So surprise to see the RYJ PC so dark, it was very moist and soft when i see the whole box. Lusi on wed night? Haha my another dream....... Haven't try a lusi b4. Got to tell myself one cigar at a time, one cigar at a time......

Hi guys,

First, Nightstalker, thank you for the El Rey tip, will give it a try.

Second, wanted to ask you guys: I work near the Fullerton hotel and was wondering whether the Post Bar at the Fullerton is a good place to light up? I sometimes am in the office past midnight and wouldn't mind heading over for a smoke as its open till 2am most nights. Have already called them and they said its cool to BYO cigars but you would have order one drink (prob a coffee for me as I dont drink alcohol)

Just wanted your thoughts on whether its a nice place based on your prior experiences.

Thanks. Ciao.
