By most accounts, Macanudo is rated one of the top non-Cuban cigar brands. And also one of the best-selling. So it is by no means a lousy cigar. In fact, I know of people (either Americans or those that have lived in America for an extended period of time) that prefer Macanudo over Cubans because they're so used to that taste.

I started out on cigars quite differently from Throttle. My first cigar is a Cohiba (Cuban) Siglo 2. Followed by a few more Cohibas before trying out the rest of the Cuban top 5 brands ie. Romeo y Julita, Partargas, Montecristo, Hoyo du Monterrey. After that, I started experimenting with non-Cubans, but only the top brands ie. Padrons, Arturo Fuente Opus X, Aston VSG with a few odd ones thrown in like Avo, CAO, Dunhill Signed Series, Cuesta Rey and Macanudo. I even went to try some recommended but less well-known boutique brands like Cuban Crafters (Nicaraguan) and Astral Grand Reserve. Only famous brand I didn't try was Davidoff, and that was because I wasn't able to find a Davidoff at a decent enough price. Of course throughout this period, I also smoked a veritable selection of all kinds of Cuban cigars.

Non-Cubans are not all floral and mild. I've had non-Cubans that are extremely full-flavoured. But they just don't have that distinctive Cuban taste that most cigar smokers crave.

Thats said, there is still one golden rule: If you enjoy the cigar, its a good cigar. Dun let anyone tell you otherwise.

However, under no circumstances should you try flavoured cigars. It is akin to drinking fish-flavoured beer.

Hey, thanks for the tips. I like the fish-flavoured beer analogy, hehe.

Yep, will move on to try more cigars from different brands and origins. I was worried I will be wasting gd cigars because I don't know how to judge and enjoy one yet so my idea was to start with some cheaper yet ok cigars and then move on from there. Is this a gd idea?

Would definitely like to meet up to learn things from you all but now holding a day job and doing part time at night, so quite difficult. Will try but it would be easier after I get my licence back, hopefully in nov or dec. (licence revoked for drink driving)

Cheers!

Hey seatiger, you're right about "wasting" good cigars. However, you might be surprised that sometimes, Cubans can be cheaper or cost the same as non-Cubans.

Just try the smaller Cubans to start with. Coronas and smaller sizes will be good. Try all kinds of Cuban hand-made brands. If unsure about , just ask the salesperson about which sizes are smaller than coronas and which ones are Cubans. Can even ask which ones are on promotion, then go try something within your price range.

Picking cigars is another art by itself. Hard to teach via forum. Will share when we meet. On your part, just check that there's no discolouration. And for Cubans, there should be a wonderful aroma emanating from the cigar when you hold it near your nose.

Nightstalker, if it's just us two tomorrow, you wanna come over to my place instead? Nearer for you too.

Hi everyone at SBF, Lawrence here. Sorry to interrupt. I must admit that i've been lurking around here for quite some time. Hope no one find any offence with my actions.

Well, the reason being my interest in cigars. I've just started smoking cigars for a few months and frankly I do not really know much about cigars. I do not own any bike and this being the SBF, will that be a problem?

I've been trying to find out more about cigars (smoking, history and knowledge) and am real glad to have learned a real lot.

I started out with cigars on a Montecristo No. 5 during a friend's party. Subsequently, I stuck with it till a months back when I tried on a No. 4. Well, it was much milder compared to the No. 5. Didn't really like it.

About a month ago, I tried on the Montecristo Edmundo and found it to be much better.

Well, that's basically my experience where cigar smoking goes. Other than that, I do really know nuts about cigars. However, I would really like to learn about cigar smoking, from the basics.

Is cigar smoking really a rich man's appreciation and hobby? Well, i'm not well off and would certainly hope a normal guy like me can get to learn to know more about cigars.

Hope to learn from all the experienced folks here. By the way, personally, I prefer a strong, intense and flavourful cigar. What might the recommendation be? Thank you.

Nice hanging out here.

Hey there thc8177, welcome! Myself, I haven't even passed my 2B yet, and I have been writing here for months. So dun worry and make yourself comfortable here.

The bunch of us agreed one time that Monte 4s are the most consistently BAD cigars. The fact that it is the best-sold cigar in the world shows that a lot of people do not know what they're talking about. I've had the experience when a 50+ year old "friend" of mine, who claims to be a cigar connoisseur and has smoked a lot of cigars, said that Monte 4s are his "go-to" cigars. I found out eventually that he doesn't even smoke cigars much, and was just talking himself up. I'm glad that your tastebuds are keen enough to tell you that Monte 4s are not great cigars. There're better cigars out there at that price point.

A good website to check out is cigars-review.org. Almost all Cuban cigars made for the mass market are evaluated by the public there. You can check it out to see which brands and vitolas fit your taste profile.

Personally, if you like strong cigars, I'd recommend the Partagas brand. Try the Serie D4. Other brands with a stronger taste profile would be Bolivar and Cohiba (expensive). For Montecristos, try the No. 2.

Contrary to popular belief, all of us here are not rich. Just a bunch of normal guys who happen to enjoy the luxury of cigar smoking. We just have to stretch our dollar and not pay silly money for lousy cigars.

hiya thc8177. welcome to the cigar thread.

dun worry abt being a non-biker/driver/cyclist/skateboarder. haha... there lots of pple out there who neither ride nor drive too. we're juz bonded by a common interest.

i picked up cigar smokin not too long ago too. been smokin for slightly more than half a yr. i must say cigars are indeed interestin. and learnin to appreciate it is like an art.

being a student myself, (and also the youngest fella in the grp),i cant really indulge like throttle does. 1 or 2 cigars per week is gd enuf for me. absence makes the heart grow fonder dun u think? hehe...

i've tried a monte 4 when i first started too. bought it from oaks, taka. cant really rem wat it tastes like, but i do rem not likin it very much. u shd try the partagas serie D no.4, H.upmann magnum 46,or the ryj exhibicion no.4. these are cigars tat i've tried and have found to like. maybe u'll like them too.

Cigars are always more enjoyable with good company. Throughly enjoyed myself tonight.

Think Nightstalker forgot to mention that we're getting a box of Fonseca Delicias. We're splitting the box. Anyone else interested to get some please let us know.

Hi Nightstalker and Entity, thanks for the warm welcome. Glad that it's alright and acceptable for me to be chatting up with you guys about cigars.

Is Oaks at taka a good place to get cigars? Well, I did not know much and had been getting my cigars at Suntec. Read from somewhere here that it's not a wise choice.

I tried searching for information about the cigars that you guys recommended and would like to try the H. Upmann Magnum 46 and the Partagas Série D No.4.

May I please find out from you the reasonable price for the cigars? May I also please find out from you the reasonable price for the Montecristo No. 2?

By the way, is there any information about cigars which I can find from the internet?

Thanks for all the kind advice.

In general, Oaks in one of the cheaper places in Singapore to buy cigars. I personally prefer the Orchard Parade branch because the service is better and the range is wider. Habanos tend to be overpriced (in my opinion from 1 year ago since I dun buy from them anymore).

The cigars you mentioned are good cigars. I dun remember exact pricing but the Magnum 46 and D4 should be $30+ and the Monte No. 2 should be just a little more.

As always, cigars are cheaper if bought in boxes (usually 25 sticks). Thats why the bunch of us can smoke at a better price point since we usually split boxes. A few of us buy singles only to "try".

A good website is cigars-review.org. People post their opinions all almost all the mass-produced Cubans ie. taste, draw, consistency, etc.

Recently, I found wikipedia.com (search "cigar" in their search option) has rather comprehensive information on the history and general information on cigars.

Another website is mycigarblog.com. It's about a Malaysian's "journey" from when he first tried out cigar smoking. Good topics and information there. You got to use the archive and scroll back all the way to his first entry though. Only "problem" is that he updates it a lot less nowadays.
