I need to enquire is it possible for someone with a diploma in Electronics & Computer Engineering with a major in Micro-Electronics and an experience of 2+yrs with a semi-con coy apply for a job in the oil industry as a technician or some electronics/computer related posts?

there are electronics tech on board a rig.

lotsa softwares, PLC , etc...

basically you need to leave your family, gf, friends for the period of time.

when they need helps, quite hard to contact you unless you call them frequently.

 

especially after the typhoon DURIAN strike at Vietnam ( Vung Tau) the vietnamess on board still need to carry on their duty. but that the time when their family need their helps they cant be with them.

Yes i do know the risk of handling h2s, but more or less the job isn't directly handling h2s, it's just their safety equipments like detectors etc. Oh the job is based in Russia, work 2 month rest 1 month. Rotating shift. These r just rough details, not sure whats the exact still.

 

Well, regarding renumeration, i guess its not really nice to dicuss it too publicly. haha. Sorry about that... about the major's pay, i dont really know actually, just a guage la..

Would say the pay is comfy, but dont just see $. People working there have to forego their social life & other sacrifices, like family & gfs. & basically is no life but work there, nothing to see also, just blank sea for months. Its not easy money earnt. u may become siao siao one..

 

What i heard they have employed people from all over the country and no one they could keep for long, the staff turnover is very high. No one really likes to work there for long. Simple to say also, you have time to earn, but no time to spend it lor.

It all depends on individual on how to have life in person in this environment. While, u can and have the ability to work at the extreme challenge and risk, the $ involve n u manage to secure in while young, enable u to move a better living at a later stage. Offshore is booming, its how u grab the chance to earn 6 digit anually n bucle up yourself. But of course, the digits u earn is all depend how valuable u r in the market.

An oil rig consist of many many scopes of people lump into one to make the rig work.

 

There can be people like materials engineer, process engineer, instrumentation engineer, or sub-vendors dealing with safety equipments, corrosions control, H2S gas control, electricals, maintainence contractors for pumps compressors, utilities engineer/contractors, etc, blah blah too many.

 

For mechatronics mostly can do instrumentation, like pressure, level, temp instruments lor. One people do one thing only.

 

As for jobscopes it depends la, cant really answer that precisely. More of troubleshooting, support project works & implementation etc lor.

 

So you can look forward to that. But oppurtunity etc comes in la.

Hmm.. marine engring is totally off trade from oil & gas actually... but sailing industry is also very good, competitive with oil & gas industry. My advice is, if you're there already, focus on your industry, you're in a very good path!

Yeah agree agree~ Its no turning back, once chosen, normally they will drift around the world until they're in their 40s then return for good.

Actually i haven't been to one yet, but yeah it should be good, no matter what. I mean, who wants to isolate themselves on a rig in the middle of nowhere for months right? So of coz companies have to compensate them by S-11 la, and also another point, its a big business.. get what i mean.

 

As for your question, it can be off-shore or on-shore. It depends where the site is. Its like anywhere underground there can be crudes, not just sea, in the middle of desserts in Nigeria too. Normally the company will give you a contract maybe 6-24 months etc, then they will tell u in advance where to go lor. Then after contract u sure get the hell out, rest for few months and splirt your money one. hahaha

 

Anyway, what i said is from infomations i get from people who came back from there la. I never personally experienced it. But nevertheless, if you have the oppurtunity, can consider. =) Good luck!
