Hi guys!

I was wondering. I went to Kallang Mac just now and when at the traffic light, i chose to turn off my engine because the lights will take forever to change. However, when i electric start my engine, the engine turns on after many cranks.

After i bought my stuff and was on the way back, i did the same thing. I electric started my damn bike, so many cranks, it still wouldn't start. So i just kick started my bike gently, just one kick, and it came to life.

Any idea why is this so? I have also been wondering that when kick starting, the chances of electric start compared to kick starting, then engine coming to life is more than electric starting.

eg: Many cranks, then engine comes to life. Kick starting, 1 to 3 kicks, engine comes to life.

does the starter start with the same sound, e.g. number of rpms is approximately the same? or does it sound weak n run down as compared to before?

if it starts with the same intensity, maybe prob with the sprag clutch or starter gears.

use this trouble-shooting guide, see if it helps you, look under 'Starter spins, but engine will not crank'.

Also, halfway down below the table, there is a recommendation that you turn the engine over by 1/4, use your kickstart to move it, then use the e-start again.

how old is the carbon inside the starter motor?

Let's just say the mileage is at 98k+ and most of the bike has not been changed besides the clutch plate and some other cosmetic parts.

sorry to side track, but is it normal for an old rx-k bike, need to rev and kick start.then the engine will come to life? or is it just me?

Don't think this was suggested - maybe your battery is dying? Might be time to replace it?

Having to crank the engine many times is a symptom of a dying battery, especially the older type which requires battery water top-up. The new "maintenance free" types are worse. They'll just die without warning.

Carb settings need to be looked at, or just use the choke for temporary enrichment. Nothing wrong with it :3

It is possible to DIY the starter motor and inspect the carbon contacts, clean up the junk inside if any; just keep an eye out for the little tiny things that start popping out when you open the motor. Fun! :D

I got no time for that. I just hope the started motor i can just replace the whole damn thing and get it cheap cheap from my "secret shop".

YBR125R dun pray pray

Anyway, I love kick starting (pity Phantom 200 doesn't have). Its an art to turn off the engine and sit at the traffic light, time the lights precisely, position oneself in 'starting position' with kick lever deployed, and start exactly on time. Drivers behind you love the show and you gain extra experience points for providing on-road drama :D

I don't dare to do this sia, even though i know my bike can start on the first kick. Skali, some malaysian kapcai zoom past you while you kickstart, you go and kick him away. Haha.

BTW, i was thinking or cosmetically making my bike into a YBR125SM. Besides handguards and mud guards, what else can i change? I think my tyres look 'SM' enough. Haha.

- change handle bar

- attach mudguard to head cowl.

- change wider "spoke" wheels.

- in thai ect, they change the wheel to a smaller diameter..

Might want to get a voltmeter to test if the battery's still OK. should read 12.9 or 13V when the bike's idle.

Maintenance-free batteries don't always last that long. The one that came stock with my car lasted on 13 months. Another guy's battery died after only 8 months. I used to think they'd last at least 2 years but I guess that's not always the case.

No harm eliminating the battery as a possible cause. It's the best place to start your investigation :)

didn't know that YBR got so many variants :)

I saw other YBR facing the same problem too, a fellow X-1R as well...

I tend to see more smaller bike with such issue... am wondering how and why?!

I was having the idea of opening a bike shop which offers 'standard' mods for the YBR.

YBR125 ---> Standard Version

YBR125-R ---> With race fairings (Lower handlebar, low profile mirrors, fairings covering the engine, modified head fairing, K&N air filter, racing carb, domino fast throttle, over-sized brake disc)

YBR125-SM --> SM version (Spoke rims, raised suspension, thicker road tyres, hand guards, smaller front and larger rear sprocket, over-sized brake disc)

YBR125-G --> Off road version (Spoke rims, raised suspension, off-road tyres, engine guard, hand guards, smaller front and larger rear sprocket, over-sized brake disc)

Haha. According to Mr. Brown, look fierce, sound fierce, can already.
