I was at BMW of Manhattan today and they had a yellow with black rims R1200S on the floor. I took it for a test ride with only 2 miles on the odometer. I've been waiting to ride this bike since the news first broke last year. I am a fan of the new faster 2-cylinder BMW bikes, such as the ST and the GS. The ST is a sweet machine, maybe not the best looking, but agile, tight and great cornering. Until today, it was the nimblest bike in BMW's line up.

The R1200S for the first time in BMW's 83 years of history manages to get 122hp out of the iconic Boxer engine. The bike looks great in my opinion and although it is the sportiest Beemer to date, it is still quite comfortable to ride. The new R12S has switchable ABS, just like the GS. So, when you hit the track you can simply turn the ABS off. I think that is the best of both worlds. For those you are on the fence about ABS, the switchable option maybe the ultimate solution yet.

The bike I rode was the premium model with ABS and Ohlins. The suspension is truly state-of-the-art. The Ohlins provide firm, sporty, responsive yet luxurious ride. As far as I know, this maybe the first time that BMW is offering Ohlins as an OEM option.

So, how does the bike ride?

Before I talk about performance, I should mention that the R12S should not be compared with the K bikes. They are really apples and oranges. Compare the R12S with the latest models of Ducati 999, Aprilia Mille and Buel 1200. In the fact the bike feels more Italian than German.

It's a twin, it's agile, it's a looker, has plenty of torque and corners like a dream. It maybe the best cornering bike in BMW's line up yet.

Since the bike that I rode was new, it was a bit rough and wasn't putting out it's full potential. Also the throttle on the test bike had too much lag. I had to give it a 1/4 turn before I got any juice out of the bike. It certainly needed to be adjusted and the lag was unacceptable. Again, brand new bikes sometimes need tweaking. Twins are famous for low-end power and the R12S has plenty of it, but at only 10 miles on the odo with a throttle that had too much lag, it wasn't easy to feel the rush at stop lights.

However, the bike felt totally stable at 100. Which for me is always a good indicator. Some bikes feel too fast at 100, whereas others make you feel like you're only doing 60. Basically the rush of speed or the experience of velocity is different depending on what type of bike you are on.

The K1200GT felt incredibly fast at 90. It made me feel like I was doing 120 or 130. The K1200S is totally at home at 120. The R1200S was also very much at home at 100. This is a light and fast twin, which deserves the "S" designation.

The R-S bikes are famous for their handling, but I think the R12S actually exceeds expectation. With unscuffed tires, at around 14 miles on the odo, this bike took corners with slightest input from the rider. Real sweet!

By the way, the bum-stopper works. I think the K12S/R could use one too. My lower back was planted on the seat as I moved quickly through the ever-smooth-shifting gears. This bike, even brand new shifts with little effort and no noise. The clutch is also very light, so the bike is quite manageable in heavy traffic.

Conclusion: The R1200S is the most nimble and agile bike in BMW's line up. It is very comfortable for a true sport bike. The "S" maybe the best cornering BMW to date. Assuming that the throttle lag on my test bike was an anomaly it has the potential to compete with the best sport twins in the world. I think this new "S" in the proven hands of a racer like Nate Kern will elevate BMW's stature in the race circuits in 2007.

However, since this is a K forum, I'd have to say that no bike in BMW's line will give you the rush of speed and rev-happy feel of a K1200S. That for me remains the ultimate Beemer.... Smile S
